I love this. I have a 1951 R and she will blow flames out of the exhaust when she’s workin hard and rollin coal like a freight train.

Best to let the engine spin longer & warm up before you put fuel to it

Old timer trick when cold, lock levers back and leave it until pony runs out of gas. Refill and it should start and run like it was 60 degrees out

One thing a lot of people don't understand what the pony Motors is there designed so the exhaust pipe run through the intake manifold of the main motor so it acts like a preheat so if you let the pony motor run thoroughly warmed up it also will warm up the inside of the intake manifold and especially with the Diesels that's crucial the mistake I've watched people make on KZfaq is the fire the pony motor up and immediately try to start the main motor which defeats the whole purpose of the way it was designed start the pony and let it run for a while probably 10 minutes on a cold snowy morning like that and then watch what happens when you hit the starter on the main motor. Also once the main motor starts disengage the pony motor but continue to let it run for a bit to continue to heat the intake manifold if it's not engaged it's not going to hurt anything to let it run

If you start the pony motor, let it run until it warms up, then engage the main engine WITHOUT fuel and let the pony turn over the diesel for about 10-15 minutes. The Pony shares its coolant with the diesel and also pre heats the oil for proper lubrication. So now, 20+ minutes later, your diesel's oil and coolant are warmed up, and the pony exhauset runs through the diesel intake manifold preheating the intake air. Now, the diesel will fire right up with full lubrication and oil pressure and won't take long to reach running temperature. This was how pony motors were supposed to be used clear down to subzero temperatures.

Just need to let the pony run longer and it would fire up was easier and be a lot happier about it.

Yup! Put a bit of heat into the manifold and block......and it will fire right up. Go get a cup of coffee and come back in 10 minutes.
