I've reviewed this twice and followed the directions this man gave to the letter. I was so easy and it worked to include the motorcraft filter. So here's my question to the 53 who didn't like this highly instructional video... what was it you didn't like? where are your reviews? Where is your video that is better and more instructional? Perhaps there is nothing that would please you? I'd really like to know!

A trick from when they first invented oil filters, put a film of oil on the rubber gasket of the filter. It snugs tightly, doesn't allow the rubber gasket to deform, prevents rubber decomp and burn in on the block, and the filter comes off easier in the next change.

Briggs and Stratton branded oil filters and SAE 30 oil will also work for this mower. Briggs and Stratton engines always recommends SAE 30. However, since John Deere equipment is known to be used in various temperatures, that is why they recommend 10W-30 on all of their mowers. Both oil grades will work on this engine.

Before removing the oil filter, I slide a homemade flat ‘trough’ under the oil filter. I fashioned the trough from a ‘flat’ plastic syrup bottle carefully cut down with a utility knife to half height horizontally, with the bottle laid down on a table, not vertically. I kept a little of the bottom of the syrup bottle so when oil drains, it doesn’t flow back against the engine. The neck of the bottle directs the oil down into the container holding the used oil. Works pretty slick, no mess. That prevents the oil running all over the frame and pulley under the engine. After cutting down the syrup bottle, you actually have two troughs to use, should one break, or a ‘buddy’ borrows it. Also, a chocolate syrup bottle would probably work just as well. Been using my troughs for years now. 🤓

If you pour with the spout at the top, you dont get glugging of the oil out of the top. Oil 101.
@MakulocosHowTos
@MakulocosHowTos 4 жыл бұрын
I never liked doing it that was especially on autos. It is very awkward to hold and you will still have the glugging factor if you pour too fast same as when pouring it any other way so I see no benefit to spout up pouring at all.

FYI: The oil container neck should be at the top when pouring the oil to keep the flow smooth and not stutter, that is the purpose of the container design. Take an empty juice container or milk bottle cut off the top and use that piece to fit under the filter with enough length to clear the chassis and cabling and a straight shot down to the drain pan, by cutting and shaping it as you try to install it, then loosen the filter and slip the "half-funnel-half trough" you designed underneath it and then continue unscrewing and removing the filter, or let the excess oil drain before trying to remove the filter, then you can remove it and the modified trough-funnel together.

As a professional mechanic for the past 20 years I have done it that way. It feels unnatural and will still gurgle if you pour too fast. I have found pouring on the side is a happy medium.

I have followed you on FordTechMakuloco for years. Later in the day, I went to the other site to look for more JD Videos. I couldn’t even find this video! I was completely confused and had to go back to the viewing history to find it again. Congratulation on the new site! I just hit subscribe and look forward to viewing all these videos. @@MakulocosHowTos When the oil flow slows down then pull out the dipstick and see what happens! It will drain much faster and completely. Also coat the oil filter O-ring with oil. That will allow you to remove the filter by hand next change. It also prevents the O-ring from baking onto the flange!
