John Deere X300 Oil Change and Lube Unboxing John Deere Home Maintenance Kit for Lawn Tractor Garden Tractor Riding Mower Maintenance
I was delinquent in changing the oil on my John Deere X300 Lawn Tractor letting the oil go over two years without changing it! The oil had about 50-60 run-hours in it but that oil endured many Michigan season changes. Over time, motor oil oxidizes and water condenses inside the tractor oil sump and oil passages which dilutes the motor oil with water and in general, messes with its lubrication properties and viscosity.
I've used AMSOIL for most of my internal combustion engines but this time I wanted to try John Deere's Home Maintenance Kit for their lawn and garden tractors. The kit comes with all the parts necessary to properly perform routine maintenance on the John Deere tractor. One of the reasons I bought the tractor maintenance kit was because they were on-sale for 15% off and if you spend over $50 on the John Deere Parts website, you get free shipping. Here's a link to the John Deere Parts web page:

There's a lot of how to videos on these john deere mowers but I'm pleased that the first one I chose to watch was yours, very thorough and easy to understand as you explain what you're doing as you go, without a bunch of unnecessary detail unlike others. My mom is a retired electrician and this year she is about two weeks away from a full spinal fusion, and as I am her only daughter living in the area, I've taken on things like mowing her farm every summer and although she's taught me some useful maintenence, she just doesn't want to budge this year on bothering with an oil change which is beyond due! Got 1500 hours and never had an oil change. Thank you.

Wow, thank you so much for leaving me such a nice comment! I really appreciate that and I truly admire you for digging in and helping your Mom maintain her farm while she goes through what sounds like some painful medical issues with her back...I'm so sorry she has to go through that! Back issues at all levels sucks! I wish her well in her procedure and for a speedy recovery, though, fusion sounds like it may require a lifestyle adjustment as well...I hope it all goes smoothly. You're a wonderful daughter coming to her aid to help and that's a heavy burden to bear, especially when you're trying to live your own life with it's own challenges and chores. Please work safely and be especially careful when you get tired as that's when I make mistakes that can cause bodily injury which is the last thing you need with all you're handling for your Mom. Given your Mom was an electrician shows she's been a truly great role model for you to be taking up working tasks that even in today's "modern sensibilities" isn't something most women likely are doing...I wholly respect you both 💪. Definitely sounds like an oil change is overdue and well deserved for your hard working tractor. I hope all goes smoothly and you might even consider doing your own videos as you maintain your Mom's farm as I'd bet you'd get views...but, that also adds more work 🤪. Good luck getting it all done and stop back to let us know how things go on changing the oil and how the rest of your Summer progresses there "on the Farm"! 👍🏻💪😎🚜

I appreciated the way you did things in the video and explained why you were doing them, like with the deli container and using the lid like a waterfall. Direct and to the point. Being a dairy farm wife, I am in charge of the mower and large lawn as my husband is busy with the farm work. I knew I picked the right video to watch when I saw that not only do we have the same lawnmower, but also the same Agri-Fab lawn sweeper! After going through a couple lawn sweepers in short order, I bought the Agri-Fab and have had it for several years. I sweep about 1.5 acres and drive each load across the lane to put in the field for our dairy cow heifers to eat. It was the traveling across the lane that broke the previous lawn sweepers. Anyway, I will look for more of your videos when I need help in the future. You Tube has had to replace my father as my teacher since he moved too far away and then passed away.

Wow, thank you for your wonderful comment and I feel super humbled as you and your husband are near top of my unsung heroes list as I DO NOT take for granted you few remaining strong, roll-up your sleeves hard working dairy farmers sustaining the World’s need for fresh dairy products 🙏❤️. Hearing you partnering with you’re husband doing the lawn grounds work makes me applaud YOU as I look at so many young women who likely wouldn’t so much as sit on a lawn tractor let alone change its oil! 👏I’m afraid you’ll find my channel videos are a bit of a mixed bag across many topics I come across as I try sharing what I find works in real life. I hope you’ll find other helpful videos but I’d hazard to guess you likely have more to teach others already than learn. Bless you for your ambition to learn and THANK YOU and your husband for the hard work you’ve both chosen that helps let me enjoy a glass of milk, ice cream, cream in my coffee and cheese with my drinks…I salute you both 🫡🫡.

I’m glad my video was helpful and I appreciate you watching and taking time to leave your nice comment! 🙏 I think these John Deere tractors are pretty resilient even if not perfectly maintained and giving them some overdue maintenance will certainly prolong their useful life. I’m definitely guilty of going longer than recommended on many of these routine tractor maintenance tasks as it’s just the nature of equipment like this. We use these “tools” to get chores done without adding another chore to our list of taking care of the equipment we use to get the chores done 🤣. Good luck on giving your JD tractor some well deserved maintenance and I hope it gives you more years of service in return! 👍

It’s been awhile since I last leveled my X300 mowing deck and I believe the “tool” mentioned is more of a gauge to help get a consistent level at various points on the mower deck while using a wrench to make the adjustments.
@LastBastian
@LastBastian 2 жыл бұрын
@@WorksIRL Yeah, my height *gauge* is located in the center of my deck height adjuster. But I believe the guy above is referring to a tool that a lot of these seem to have. Which is some kind of long hex bar that can be inserted through holes in the body/running boards of some X300 tractors. To adjust the height much more easily. Apparently a lot of JD 300's are that way, as I had to sort through quite a few videos before finding a couple that *don't* have that set up. 🤷‍♂️

Great fun car though...pretended to be Jim Rockford and pulled many a "Rockford" on the farm roads where I grew up...fun times! @WorksIRL
@WorksIRL Ай бұрын
It might be the mower deck spindle(s). They have grease zerks on top into which I try squeezing a few pumps of grease routinely. However, I've heard the grease may or may not even reach the bearings inside. The spindles on our X300 apparently are notoriously loud and often need replacing or rebuilding. Mine has one that's very loud but not "squealing"...more of a "rumble". I usually attribute squealing to a slipping belt on a pulley or sheave. Too much or too little tension from the belt spring (likely too little tension if the spring doesn't keep the belt taut enough). Grease on a belt surfaces of sheave or pulley might also cause the belt to slip and squeal. The other possibility is the PTO bearing driving the mower deck belt directly underneath the engine. It has a clutch mechanism and might be worn out. I've not changed mine, yet, but I suspect it could also "squeal". Good luck and keep us posted what you find out! Thanks for watching!

@WorksIRL
@WorksIRL 5 ай бұрын
I bought and installed the mulching kit (deck chute plug and dual mulching blades) shortly after buying my X300 back in 2014 and it's performed perfectly well! I definitely am a patient mower and adjust my forward-motion mowing speed to allow it to "chew" through taller, wetter grass and I'll even re-mow in a different direction over those areas if I see the clippings laying on top of the grass but mostly in my mowing route...in other words, I'll simply choose to turn widely through those areas as I'm turning to give those areas in which I see any grass clippings on top an extra "chew". I also do try to raise the deck to maintain the idea of only taking 1/3 of the length of the grass if I've let the grass get out of control due to rainy week and/or my work schedule didn't allow me to get out and mow as often as I should, etc. I could see it being a problem if I mowed like some of my neighbors I watch ripping through their riding mowing sessions like they're NASCAR drivers 🤣 I tend to have more patience and enjoy my time on my mower because if I'm not mowing, I'm working on other more laborious tasks so why rush it?😆

Is it worth having a Briggs & Stratton motor? Is it a good engine then the Kawasaki
@WorksIRL
@WorksIRL Жыл бұрын
Off the cuff, I'd place B&S as 2nd to Kawasaki being better in overall engine quality, durability, lower-maintenance, efficiency and smoothness. My experience with B&S engines is they seem to always have some carburetor issues even a few seasons into use whereas I've utterly neglected the Kawasaki in my John Deere X300 expecting to have issues and it runs as smoothly as it did from day 1 (...now I've jinxed it saying that! 😆). Japanese engines are just superior in my opinion. My Honda walk-behind mower is now 30 years old, neglected terribly all those years (rarely removing old gasoline in Winter) and it starts on the first two pulls every Spring...it's unreal. I get that same confidence from the Kawasaki engine on this John Deere. I'm confident the John Deere X300 hydrostatic transmission will fail long before I even consider having engine issues. Keep in mind, this Briggs and Stratton vs. Kawasaki engine debate is very much like any "Chevy vs. Ford" debate and will likely always be tainted by individuals' bias but I truly think Japanese engine quality, reliability and longevity has become pretty much legend of truth so I'd doubt many could argue with it. Good luck and keep us posted what you decide or what you conclude from your research/experience. Thanks for watching and commenting!

With any small engine cellular foam air pre-filter, I usually vacuum them out then hand-wash them with hand-soap or dishwashing liquid under warm water and just squeeze them dry, let them air dry then reinstall them. I replace them periodically but usually just clean and reinstall them until they look too worn out then I replace them.

@@WorksIRL one more question... do you think it's ok to use plain old 10w30 motor oil?

@@unclefreddieDied check out my channel’s recent Community tab post where I provide you the motor oil details specified in my 2014 John Deere X300 tractor user manual. Understandably, John Deere prefers owners using John Deere branded oils but they do state it’s acceptable to use any oil with the “API Service Classification SJ or higher”. See the photos I posted from the manual in my Community post for operating temperature range viscosity recommendations.
