Hi Josh, Good morning from Ontario, Canada. This is an amazingly informative video. I like the way you explain things in detail as you go through. That Woods machine sure is something. Great thought process on the multi species idea fir variety for the animals. Up here in Ontario we obviously have colder winters with tons of snow so our type of seed is different, but the concept would be the same. Thanks for the lesson and the effort it takes to produce your videos. 👍

I would call this no till. Appears you are only disturbing the thatch layer and the top soil surface. No in ground root disturbance. Great video. Thanks.

We had a Land Pride drop seeder, similar style. It wasn't bad, but Erik thought a no till drill would be more effective. Ours only had 1 box, so you are lucky to have so many boxes! We used ours both for overseeding and planting into tilled ground. Overseeding seemed good, but for new seeding we found that we had to double our seeding rate for really nice first year growth. We ended up selling ours, going to rent a no till drill and see how it goes :)

There ya go....we've been renting one for several years...to the tune of about $5k over the past 6 years...shew what an expense. This seeder does great and saves a ton of money on seed. should pay for itself in about 4 years

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer agreed! Ours was $4800 used. All we could find across several states! Our local dnr has seeders for $100 to rent. They are the only ones too. Its strange out here, im telling ya!

@@WTFarmGirl I had to order a new land pride seeder this spring. It is the same thing you had but it has a small seed box added on the back. It was $8500 and I had to Waite two months to get it. I am glad I got the small seed box because small seeds like timothy and alfalfa are hard to control the rate of in the main seed box.

Even Mr. Suburbanite here knows that cows are not grain eaters. Modern battery farms force their cattle to eat grain, but then they are also fed antacids to ease the digestive difficulties. Your plan, while expensive up front, should create a profitable situation in the future. Your thinking is impressive.

At one time, not too long ago, I might add, the little Massey you have would have been the do all on farms of 500 acres, and more. As a kid in the late 60's, early 70's, it seemed every farm you went by there was a Massey 35 doing the work. I still remember the first time I saw a Ford 3000 or 4000, in 71-72. I have never forgotten that first blue tractor, and have always wanted one. I will someday come across one for sale, and acquire it, just to regain a bit of that little boy in me. lol

Hi Josh. I just came across this 3 yr old video. Do you still use your Woods seeder? I had a couple questions. After 3 yrs is it holding up well, do you still like it? On the spiked drive roller, are the spikes replaceable? Do you have issues with them bending on rocks ect? Lastly are they built heavy duty to last a while? Thank you!!! Sure enjoy your videos!!
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 6 ай бұрын
I love it, nothing has broken, no issues what so ever. The spikes will bend if you hit rocks so if you have rocky soil they have another option. You can replace the spikes or simply tap them with a hammer and they'll straighten right up. This is a lifetime purchase for pasture management! I love it!

Speaking as a long time equipment guy, not knowing exactly what you need but off the top of my head, I'd sell the 5065 and get a Kubota kx057 for my backhoe and upgrade my tractor to a 100 hp tractor like the Deere 5100m. A farm of your size needs a mini ex, like the kx057, on site at all times in my opinion. Haha. That's my two cents, not that you asked for it though.

Do you have a price for how much all of this has cost you? For the initial land price, work hours, fencing, equipment, tools, and cows? I'm interested in trying to start a farm but want to know what an average starting price would look like.
@phillipgrimshaw351
@phillipgrimshaw351 3 жыл бұрын
Let's just say a lot. When you hear the number you'll want to change your britches. Based on personal experience, since I'm roughly in the same region as SRF, land like he originally bought will probably run $2,800 per acre (if you want clear pasture you can pay anywhere from $5,000-10,000/acre), clearing cost to make new pasture will be about $700-800/acre. Initial seeding and lime will probably cost about $90/acre on the cheaper side, fencing for cows is the simplest you can make and a decent 5 wire high-tensile electric fence will run about $1.75 per linear foot, and don't forget cross-fencing so you can divide into smaller paddocks (look up Greg Judy and he can explain that further using reels), a tractor in the 60-75 HP range is $40-50k new, but could be had cheaper used depending on your technical aptitude, bushhog and other basic implements together would run about $5,000-$10,000, water installations and feeders should go ahead and budget 5k-10K (the USDA subsidizes well drilling and autowaterers so this cost can be much cheaper, add another $5k-7k for a squeezeshoot/headgate and building a simple handling setup (you won't want to handle you animals in the field if you're doing this commercially. Optional: barn and/or hay storage for a small commercial operation would be around $20,000 and likely include grading----bear in mind this is for a metal open sided building like Carolina Carports. Bottom line, a 100 acre cattle operation (no including cows or a bull) will likely cost you $442,750 but that also doesn't include a house. In my area of South Carolina you can currently find a 100 acre turn key cattle farm for about $600,000 (animals and most equipment not included)

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer LOL As a matter of fact I am. I got just 5 acres and 1 series as well. Its a light eight tractor and the loader can take control of the tractor very quickly even with ballast. Without the loader, my tiller becomes a bear to handle. I got a couple of big projects that too big for the tractor I got, but time and patients will get it done. Love to have your for a couple of days. LOL.
