John Deere x738 vs John Deere 1025r or John Deere x758 vs John Deere 1025r.
We're comparing a John Deere x738/x758 garden tractor vs a John Deere 1023e/1025r subcompact tractor in today's video. There are some major differences between these two machines. Surprisingly, the price isn't one of those big differences. The John Deere x700 Series is still a great machine for those who have a handful of specific needs, but the John Deere 1 Series is going to provide a lot more bang for the buck. So, watch the video to get a more in depth look at the differences between these John Deere tractors.

When I bought my X739 a handful of years ago the 1025R was cheaper with a mowing deck, and snowblower. It was just too big for my needs. Love my X739.

My 1023e tlb and x300 have two different uses. X series with bagger around and under trees in half the time, my hat is my clearance indicator. The 1023e running the loader or back hoe all day long on less than half the fuel. Throw the snow push on the 4 wheel drive diesel vs a plow and chains with weights on the x series and life is fun for the old man. Do your bucket list while you still can. These things will make you smile.

I have a 2017 2032r and a 2013 x758. x758 has a lower center of gravity. You really notice while mowing sideways when you have no other options on steep hills. You don't get that clinching experience. x758 has awd all the time, so you don't have to remember when engaging it.. x758 gets better traction, hands down. Even if you engage the 4wd on the 2032r for side hill mowing or even slight hills, if you hit a wet spot you can see the front wheels slide a bit and it is unnerving. The x758 doesn't budge in the same spot. In fact, I drove my x758 left side tires about 1 foot into our pond (blades not on) and it came right out without spinning. I wouldn't even try that with the 2032r. x758 does not tear the grass up as much or leave ruts. This is definitely noticeable in the fall for leaf cleanup when the ground is not optimally dry. x758 attachments are just as expensive as the tractor. So, remember that. I purchased mine just to mow. I spend money on the attachments for the tractor. x758 has tighter turning radius and you don't have to worry about rops hitting low hanging limbs. Both are easy to work on. I don't think the autoconnect is worth it for the x758. It takes just as long as without this feature. Now, they both are an investment and hold their values. You can do more with the tractor, but again, if you can find both used, you won't lose your money if you decide to sell either one. I bought the 2032r tlb with 72" deck with 220 hours for $25k from an individual. I didn't want it to mow because I had a JD z910. However, I stumbled across an x758 with 192 hours on it for $8k (60" hc deck) and jumped all over it. Sold the zero turn and do not regret it. Takes me 10 minutes longer to mow with x758 vs the z910a, but reduced my weedeating by 20 minutes because the x758 gets the entire edge of the pond and all the ditches. Again, if you can afford it and are on the fence, get the tractor and the x758. You will not lose your money like when purchasing a vehicle. If I had flat ground, I never would have purchased the x758. You just have to make that decision on your own.

Thanks for your take on these two tractors. Both have their pluses and minuses. It really depends upon what your primary task is. The x7 series primary task is mowing and it does it well.

Best comment on this video for someone that is struggling between Garden Tractor and 1 Series, since the JD dealers, don't want to sell anything but 1 Series, they won't even give you time, its always the same, the money is the same for an X series as it is for a 1 Series so we have not sold a X series in years! And they are right, except, that some people do not want or need a tractor they just want a great mower. Thanks for the comment.

Local JD dealer sent me a loaner x739 while I was waiting for my 1025R...Nice lil tractor. Loved the all wheel steering turning on a dime. Very cool! Almost changed my mind....But I really wanted the backhoe, so I didn't change my mind..Nothing against the X but I am glad I didn't change...Thanks for sharing!

I had a x729, 2009 vintage, beautiful gas mower, all wheel steer, 4 wheel, 54” mower deck, 48” snow blower, which worked great with no chains or wheel weights. Worked great on my 6 acres with lots of trees to mow around. Upgraded to 1025r last fall. Great machine too, turning radius is fine, works great on snow removal and grass cutting. The 1025r has more levers and buttons to play with, lol, makes you feel like a heavy equipment operator. My 54” auto connect mower deck doesn’t have the load-n-go feature, newer models this year you can upgrade to a deck with the load-n-go deck in 54”. I would have upgraded to the Versatrac radial tires for better ride. Wish the 1025r had an air suspension seat! Get the arm rests for comfort. Also please remember if you get a 1025r with a loader, you’ll need a ballast box or rear weights for safety.

When doing loader work I put my back hoe back on. Those come off when 60 inch mower deck is on. I need to get some other implements, but that little back hoe and loader have done a ton of smaller projects for my home and a few other people. Even used it to assist contractor the other day in a tight spot that was not conducive to his bobcat skid steer post hole digger. That loader can move a large amount of materials as well. All in all, I love my 1025r, it really beats a shovel,wheelbarrow and post hole digger!

Ed Haight that’s true for the 60” deck, but you can’t buy the load-n-go brackets for the older 54” deck. JD changed the configuration on the 54” deck this year 2020 so it will accommodate the load-n-go brackets. Great conversation. Both very nice machines for sure. As an x738 owner with a 60 inch deck and 47 in blower that lives in minnesota. 80% of machine hours is mowing for me, and this is the Cadillac of mowers. With that being said, I can blow snow like I never thought possible with a “lawn tractor” with the 4x4

Cody, A very helpful review, I didn't realize the X758 didn't come standard with a rear PTO and 3pt hitch where the 1925R does along with getting a heavier frame and front axel. I also forgot about the H/L range of the transmission on the 1025R which is not available on the X758 or that the joy stick controls were that different. Glad you mentioned the price comparison too as I now see where the 1025R is the way to go. Thanks

Learned a couple things here...the diesel rendition of the x738 is the x758 . . . didn't know they even had a diesel. I also learned that the seat on the 738 is lower than the 1025R. I also learned that the x738 can be fitted with cab heat. And finally, I learned that a bit of strawberry jam with peanut butter on toast goes really good with corn flakes! Awesome Saturday Morning with GWT!! :)

I agree 100%. I have a X495 that I have had for 15+ years. A great diesel mower with a 62 inch deck. Since then, I bought property and now have a total of 18 acres , wooded and open. I was looking for a 1025R, 2032R or 2038R but found a steal on a 3025E that I could not pass up. Problem is now I have two tractors to store and take care of. Knowing what I know now and needing to do more than just mow, the 1025R is a no brainer.

This past October I bought a 1025R with bucket loader and 54 inch mower deck. I had the Versa Turf radial tires put on it. I am finding that I am digging up the lawn with the Versa Turf tires. But I am mowing with the bucket loader on the front. Now (JAN 22) that I am getting used to the 1025R, I will probably use my old X390 for mowing (two three acres of grass and hills). I'll use the 1025R for moving logs, split firewood, stacking firewood, and moving brush and rocks. I am not comfortable with the lean on the 11025r on the side hills. Plan to get a York rake and a 1500 snow pusher this year. Also I have 12 acres of land mostly woods. and my driveway is 1/4 mile long up a hill and it is paved.

The rear PTO and 3 point hitch are the only things that I wish were included in my 2007 X728. Other than that, mine does everything I need it to; mowing, pushing snow, and loader-work. I plow my sloped driveway with no problems without chains or weights with turf tires. I love that my X-series is older and I can manually switch between 2WD and 4WD.

Another major difference is that on the X700 series you do not have separate hydraulic controls between front end loader and three point hitch. Even though there is a “lockout valve” on the hydraulic grid, it does not separate the bucket curl from the 3-point hitch movement. So, you have to disconnect the hydraulics to the bucket curl and then you can operate the hitch. Very poor design. Aux Hydraulics in Florida makes a kit to add a third fender-mounted lever to control the hitch, and making the original two levers exclusive to the FEL.

I’ve been watching tons of videos and still having a heck of a time deciding between these two. I currently have a Kubota ZD1011 commercial zero turn mower with a 54” deck that I don’t like and am going to sell. I have 12 acres, 5 of which are field/pasture, and around 4 acres of grass. Mostly flat- some hills but nothing too crazy. The ground is pretty uneven and I have to run the zero turn at around half speed so I’m not rattling my brains. I have a Bobcat 5-ton excavator now and a JD 4066R coming in October (massive delay, obviously), so I don’t really need the optional capabilities. Definitely not the loader or the back hoe. There’s a pond to mow around, the house, and the back patio, but the zero turn doesn’t save that much time. One of the sections of grass has quite a bit of clay and can be a little soupy in the spring- thus the 4x4. I’m looking for comfort, speed, and the ability to haul a 50CF lawn trailer/leaf vacuum with an onboard impeller/vacuum. Which one do I get?!? The 1025R or the X758?!

I would go with the x758. I have one and it fits my needs great. I cut 3 acres, some hills so I really like the low center of gravity. I also have a MF 2860 so I don't need two loaders. I run a snow plow, sprayer, dethatcher and carryall and the 758 works very well.

I bought an X758 last year. I was a little concerned about the all wheel drive system but let me just say it's awesome. I can handle ditches & inclines with ease. I bought it knowing in advance that I wanted an actual lawnmower that would hold up 20+ years and once it was paid off then go buy a JD 3 series or Kubota LX series with a cab, loader, & backhoe for all my other stuff so I wouldn't be putting all the hours on the compact tractor. If you don't need a bucket I highly recommend the X series but definitely get the diesel for the torque & fuel efficiency. 😉

We have both the x7 and the 1025r here and are routinely mowing sidehills. The x7 series holds the sidehill much easier bc imho the center of gravity is alot lower. Both tractors have their places but for mowing the x7 series is the one you want. Turning radius is 2 feet compared to 7 feet on the 1025r.

I have the X739 with 54" deck, 16 BU MCS + dump from seat box, 47" snow blower and a "45" Front end loader. Guzzles gas - I don't care. I use gas on lots of yard tools, it's nice not have have to buy and store that stinky liquid. Get diesel on you and you stink for a long time. FEL max lift is around 400lbs. Not a lot but super nice compared to not having one. I've done a lot of work with mine and find it incredibility useful. The MSC is too low to the ground. It gets caught on the ground and bends the arms of the dump box when I cross pretty shallow ditches. I have some of these in the back yard since the property used to be farm land. The Engine is under powered to mow at full speed, which I always do, when the MCS is on, I'm mowing uphill and cutting 4 inches of grass, other than that, plenty power. I have 3 acres to cut and get it done in about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The all wheel steering is near zero turn. I doubt I could mow that fast with the 1025R. With the 1025R the dealer will tell you to stay in 2 wheel drive and also talk about the lever to step on to lock the rear differential. Basically you're in 1 wheel drive all the time unless you need it, by then you may have done some damage. With the X739, you stay in all wheel drive all the time. Turn as sharp as you can and you don't tear up the grass. Power the FEL into dirt, all 4 wheels are engaged. You don't have to think about it. With the weight, If you have soft turf in the spring, you are going be to much more prone to sink into it with the much heavier 1 series. Do I want a bigger tractor? Of course! The bigger the better right? I think I'd regret it.

Went to the John Deere Dealer, wanted a 1025r, I left with a X739 rear pto, rear remotes, drive over deck, 54" tractor shovel.... Anyway I regret buying the 739. I need a backhoe and fel. Frustrating.

They don't make a FEL for the X700-series anymore? I have a 2007 X728 and just picked up a used 45 loader last month and it's the best thing I've bought since the tractor.

Hmm, maybe I'm missing something but the price for an X7 diesel upgrade looks liked ~1200 MSRP to me, and in practice is like 700 at my local dealer. Anyhow, I'll likely upgrade to one from my X485 at some point but man I have a hard time seeing those molded plastic dash control levers and gimmicky aluminum wheels on what is supposed to be a sturdy, premium machine. Makes it look like a big box store toy.
@northdakotaham1752
@northdakotaham1752 3 жыл бұрын
I dont' think the aluminum wheels will be a problem. We have both the x485 and the x730 and have a new x758 on the way. If you are mowing on your yard, you don't want a really heavy machine because it cuts up the yard. We also have the 1025r and it tears the yard up if you need to turn sharp. Does a little better if you go to 2wd but it is quite a bit more heavy. Something to consider.

I completely agree with you about the cheesy looking aluminum wheels. The old yellow painted 1970's style steel spoke looked so much better. And I'm sure cost much less.

How does the 1025R do on grass when turning, will it create ruts or ruin the grass?

No problems at all running 2WD with turf tires. Sharp turns in 4WD will definitely cause more damage to the grass.

To me the big advantage of the Deere garden tractors is AWS and tight mowing conditions. They hands down beat the sub-compacts. It's too bad Deere doesn't offer an x759. Removing the AWS advantage doesn't leave much room for competition to the 1025r. Buy a zero-turn for mowing, and a sub-compact for tractoring. Re-introducing an X759 model would make the x7 series far more interesting as a machine that could do both jobs of a ZT/Tractor all in one machine. The gas versions are too thirsty to be a contender in my opinion.

A X738 AWD with 48" deck is about $12,000. A S240 with 48" deck is $3,800 out the door with 46" front blade. I can think of all sorts of things that extra $8,200 could buy me.

@@GoodWorksTractors Even though the X758 might last longer, you could buy almost three S240's with that money. Or better yet get three S240's right away and have three times the fun.

@@Tchristman100 Longevity is hardly the only difference. The x758 has AWD, a commercial quality transaxle, and far more capabilities than the S240. The S240 is a 2WD lawnmower. It would not negotiate the hills or terrain that the x758 would be able to tackle. You would end up destroying the transaxle on the S240 with any type of significant hills or slopes. Additionally, the S240 can't move snow, with a plow or snowblower, nearly as effectively as the x758. It truly is a silly comparison to make. The x758 also has the capability to upgrade to a 3-point hitch along with a rear PTO. I'm not saying the S240 doesn't have its place, but please don't try and compare these two machines. It makes no sense. If the S240 works for your needs, then by all means go that route. I'm sure its a capable machine for its intended use. But, the x758 is a higher quality machine with significantly more capabilities.
@Tchristman100

@@jasonl5961 The S240 has been out for many years. With the difference in price, you could buy 4-S240's. Then with those 4-S240's you could start your own Lawn service. They do make a snow blower and a blade for the front of the S240. I understand why you need it for your hilly 3 acres. I have about 3/4 acre of lawn that is flat-I see no need for an expensive commercial grade lawn tractor with a Diesel engine.

I have both...the X7 series will out turn the 1025r. So mowing around obstacles, the x7 is the rig you want. The lifting capability of the 1025r, or lack of lifting capability....can get you in some trouble if you are not experienced in lifting with a loader.

America needs to learn that there’s more then just one country in the whole world. I hate the fact that you can’t get ac for the closed in cabs as someone who lives in the tropics of North Queensland, Australia seeing a regular 45+ degrees with near 100% humidity, it definitely isn’t fun mowing in conditions like that for 10 hours straight per day with a power flow and bags system throwing up bulk dust. Please get it together John Deere

I have heard that if you go diesel to stay away from bio-diesel at all costs. I have found a gas station that has plain old diesel. I am saying that in a smaller tractor or for a smaller engine you might save yourself a head ache or 2. During the winter the bio-diesel will gel up quicker and stay in your fuel filter then you have to change it or in my case both of them. I have a BX2360 and in the winter anti gel is still put in the fuel with no problem of gelling. Have a great day and tractor on
