Comparing the two big diesel garden tractors from Deere. The 455 was built from 1993-2001 and the X series (in the form shown) was built from 2003-2012. In 2013 there were some redesigns to the X7's resulting in all model numbers increasing by 10... e.g. X748 to the X758.
Both of these machines (in my opinion) are solid work horses for end user, whether it be residential or light commercial.

I have owned six 455's with the 54 and 60 decks. The cut quality of the 60" deck was the best. I upgraded to an X595 with the 62C deck which is much lighter than the 60" 455 deck. Next, I bought a second X595 and an X740 with the 62C deck. So I have the 62C decks on three different tractors and do not get as good a cut as the old 60" 455 deck. The gage wheels, spindles and wheel adjustments were shot on two of the decks. You have to change the complete axle with adjusting shaft not just a bushing. That is a VERY expensive repair. I cannot seem to get the 62C adjusted evenly on the X595's which are the oldest. I am now looking at an X748 with a 7 Iron deck just because I like the gage wheel adjustment method. There is a world of difference between a 455 with a 22 HP Yanmar and the X595 & X740 24 HP Yanmar. I never thought I would say that, until I bought the X595 which is also 4 wheel drive. The X748 is just the newer version with the same 24 HP engine. I am thinking of buying a used X748 with a 60" 7 IRON deck that has the HFWD, just because I found one with a very reasonable price. The 7 Iron deck reminds me of the HEAVY DUTY 455 60" deck.
@aprilgeneric8027
@aprilgeneric8027 Жыл бұрын
the 7 iron deck is actually the floating toro deep deck (which is actually the honda deck) any deck based on the honda deep deck sure beats the cut of all previous decks. the 48" decks actually provide the best contour cuts for unlevel ground such as architectural landscaped yards. incidentally cub cadet IH uses the honda designs besides deere. don't think deere and cub cadet actually make anything original since the 300 series, they just sears/craftsman some one else's stuff. the 400's are the exact same as hondas and most especially anything 90's and newer has very little changes other then the anti scalp attachments and paint colors and body cover styles. just like sears did. this has been my personal experience starting with IH 129 and then to a 140H3 and to a 318 and 400& 430 and then to a 455 and 445 and now the Z930M

SOME DAY HOPE TO HAVE A NEWER VERSION 700 SERIES OR 2000 SERIES TRACTOR TO ADD TO MY LINEUP......I NEED A BUCKET. Nice video. I love John Deere garden tractors. I have a mint 425 I still use to snow blow, pull a wagon and aerator around but mower deck hasn’t been on it in years. Not sure why anyone would want to mow a lot of grass with one of these machines over a nice zero turn (unless you are on hilly terrain). ZTR is so much faster and most put a far superior cut on the grass with higher blade speed and fabricated decks for higher lift. I used to mow 4 acres with my 425 before getting a 61” Ferris and wouldn’t dream of ever going back. Great lawn tractors though that definitely have their place!
@mmrbeef

I agree that zero turns are much faster at mowing. While I have a dislike (just a personal preference) for zero turns, I do have a front mount mower that eats grass like no other. Here is 30,000 sq ft in 9 minutes. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f6xdlLWoktOrfYk.html

Thanks for the comment. May I ask where you found that information? As far as I know the last new year for the 4-5 series was 2001 with some being sold by dealers into 2002 as the X4-5 and X5-5 came into production and were delivered to dealers.

So it may have been left over stock. I did some looking this morning and the last model year for the 455 was 2001 and according to the Deere literature I have serial numbers M00455C090001-999999 were 2001 model year. The “C” designation was used for type, C indicates two wheel steer for the US market (other types were export, European, Two wheel steer and four wheel steer with codes A-E being used). Based on you buying it in 2003, I’m guessing you machine was dealer stock for late 2001- early 2002. It is very common for models to overlap at the dealership depending on supply. For example I have a 1974 140 that the original owner purchased in late 1975 because he hated the styling of the new 300’s.

on all AWS models i fault the non roller scalp wheels #1 because they tear up the grass when not mowing forward/ going forward with the deck to the ground. even the half moon rounded ones as they have an edge to them and the edge cuts into unlevel ground such as around drains and trees, boulders and lamp posts, mailboxes, ditches, the list goes on and on etc etc but you get the idea, going forward non all wheel steer & non zero turn doesn't matter if it's a 445AWS, X739 AWS, Z930M. same issue he dual swivels on the old 400 series to 430 series were nice, but they never came in a AWS so 95% of the time you went forward as it was faster rather than back up, if you backed up you still had tearing issues with the rear deck wheels which is still true even on the 100-455's. my 445 i replaced those straight wheels with thin round overs and have issues, but much less. the front swivel wheel i have issues with due to it not spinning easily nor fast enough but that probably has more to do with the lucas red and tacky grease i use for them. were i to use a white lithium grease or just used motor oil dry graphite, they would probably spin just fine.

One thing I've always wondered is if the Hydraulic Dump MCS and 3 Bag Power Pak MCS from the 4-5 series would fit right up to the X400/X500/X700 series without modification. I've seen a couple of X500s with the hydraulic dump system but wasn't sure if they required any modifications.

Honestly I am not sure. I have seen the same thing but I do not know if there were any modifcations involved. Look on MyTractorForum.com. There are a couple folks on there that have fit an older MCS unit onto a new machine.

I know you replaced the Tires on the 455, but the tires you selected are standard turf tires. Did you not select tires like you have on 7 series because the 455 is not 4x4 or because of intended usage, or some other reason. I ask because I need to replace the tires on my X300 and I would like to have greater traction for pulling tree stumps and the like - typical overuse of a lawn tractors capabilities. 🙄
@mmrbeef
@mmrbeef 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't bit the bullet on the tires yet.... my tire bill was big enough this last month.... had to put new tires on the truck!! Honestly I am a fan of either the V61's or the turfs up front and either the turfs or some type of HDAP on the back.... In this case I am not planning on replacing the rear tires so most likely turfs will go up front when I get over the shock of the last tire purchase! Haha

I’m looking at a 5200$ 455 with 54 deck, a cab, front blade with quick hitch, rear PTO and 3PT and suspension seat with 81 hours on the clock from 1994 vs a 7900$ x595 from 05 with 48 deck with mulching kit, front weights, tougher tires, rear PTO and 3 bin collection system. It’s got 600 hours on it. My main interest is to do ground engagement work, so looking to fabricate a front loader (or an extra attachment for the 455 blade to start) and a tiller on the back. The price diference is kinda big, and I am wondering if it is worth it to pay for the 4x4 and age diference that much, and still have to look for a 3PT afterwards. Have both sellers waiting on a reply, so would greatly appreciate your input.

I see no reason why an X495 would not hold up as long as a 455. Depending on where you are at $5,800 for a low hour 455 is a great price to sell. You can get into a low hour X728/48 for just a little more than that most of the time.
