I think Horace Mann is America's education system. Many known schools drill and reward with merit bias or unbiased. While the traditional school system has been deteriorating for decades regardless of funding provided. Progressive would show the economic demands and teach children based on that theory. With things like education being outdated, progressivism is in approach, but the Horace Mann system is still a strong tool in America education approach. Drill, drill, discipline, drill and one size fits all in style of learning. Take tests, pass your grades and you are taught to believe those scores will determine your failures or success in life. Truth is knowledge is a portion of success while character and other important elements like individualism and wit is another.

So, what happened to Hands On Learning then? Students should have learned from being OUTDOORS, in nature and not in the mind controlled classrooms..

I Would have to Disagree. Because of john dewey we have failing public schools in America. This man is no hero for American Public School Education and Deserves no glorification.

i agree that the education system is a mess. But dont blame it solely on his philosophy. That man was ahead of his times

@@WhitneyJW i Wrote This 11 months ago. I can answer your question. When i look at people Who was Ahead of Their Time, i Think Of Men Like Socrates, Nikola Tesla, Thomas Jefferson. Not john dewey. The dewey system does Not Work for every Student, The Learning Disabled. The dewey system like every other old policy for Suppose to be American Education, is Outdated. Not only should America Move past the dewey system, it should have never been adopted. Ok, agree with me or not America can Do Way Better without it in her Future of public schools. This is 2020 Not 1898 when it was adopted. We should adopt something more for Modern Times and not something 122 years ago, Basically Prehistoric. Think about it, In the Year 1898 122 years ago, Coca Cola was Produced by John Pemberton. America has the Worlds Greatest Technology, yet has the worst Policies for Education that is never updated. We graduate less scientists than any country while Sweden and Finland are out classing America with there No Homework Policy.

@@AWFULWORKPLACES I feel like you're just putting full negativity towards his philosophy. Yeah I agree that it doesn't work for every child, that's why there are many philosophies out there and parents should pay attention and learn about all the philosophies and choose good schools for their children. However, progressive learning which is child centered learning isn't bad or wrong. There are philosophies that are similar to his that have a high success percentage. Children who went to these schools at a young age were later successful and graduated from good universities. I can't remember which one it was exactly because I'm learning about a lot of philosophies at the moment. Child centered learning isn't just giving a child freedom to do whatever, the toys they play with, activities they do, things they are taught, are all still developmentally appropriate for their age. Anyways, do look more into these things before just going at all philosophies with a negative mind set. Nikola Tesla was a drop out. That doesn't mean in order for children to become like Nikola Tesla they have to drop out. Every child is unique and has their own way of developing a strong base.

You keep saying his theory is outdated, but how though? Some aspects of it is still very much applicable to modern day education. It just needs to be tweaked perhaps, but still. Although, here in the Philippines (unfortunately), western educational philosophies are glorified, particularly from American educational psychologists and their theories; our Department of Education is fixated and dewy-eyed (pun intended) with big words like “constructivism” and I agree that that shouldn’t be the case. They just aren’t always applicable in the classroom. Thankfully, like one commenter said - we do have other philosophies we can apply. No one teaching philosophy is perfect; a mix of them is what’s best.
