I don't know how old you are, but I remember in the 90s, Wayne Gretzky regularly had very low penalty minutes, for one very important reasons: he got the benefit of the doubt because he was considered an ambassador for the game. This is nothing new. McDavid isn't the first top scorer and high profile player to get away with things. But after Wayne left Edmonton, he got to one Stanley Cup Final and didn't win anything in his last 11 years. So opposing teams found ways in the playoffs to beat teams he played for regardless of that.

There was one glaring missed call on the high stick on Hughes. You're going to have missed calls going both ways, but that was the one that stood out. And I don't buy that the Zadorov goal was a make up, because if that play was really offside, the Oilers would have challenged it and won. The refs couldn't have done a thing about that. It wasn't so much that the officiating favoured the Oilers, it was that it wasn't good. The league needs to start having standards, but we've been complaining about this since the 90s, and probably before. The fact that officials are reluctant to call penalties against McDavid is par for the course. I remember in the 90s, there was a reason Wayne Gretzky had so few penalty minutes. The refs just wouldn't call anything against him. He got away with everything. A top offensive player and "ambassador for the game" getting away with stuff is nothing new. McDavid isn't the first top scorer to get preferential treatment. But Wayne didn't win anything after leaving Edmonton, so it's not like teams couldn't find ways to beat the Kings, Blues or Rangers despite all that. The Canucks just have to find ways to stop McDavid even though they know those calls probably aren't going their way. Other teams had to figure that out.

I know the reffing wasnt the best for the canucks. But, canucks need to skate and win battles on boards. When you stop skating against mcdavid and them . Or not caught footed. They are going to find a way to beat you, and score. Mcdavid and drai are soooo freaking good. They always find a scoring area . Reffing wasnt why they lost. They lost cause they stopped skating , and not being aggressive on a forecheck. Or losing battles on the boards.

The Canucks had this the last series against Nashville but managed somehow when only had 8 pp in 6 games something like that Idr and Nashville had what 18 or some sht it just seems its one sided favoring other teams. Why don't they get a man to shadow McDavid? Stick on him like white on rice. Hit him every chance they get. As soon as he touches the puck someone lays him out with a Mike Peca centre ice hit special or a Scott Stevens hit to the jaw from the side like he laid Lindros out.

It feels that way doesn't it. But Tocchet is the most practical and realistic coach I've seen. If he can find a way to reduce McD's impact, then Canucks should win. They have more good players, just not McD good.

You think playing your top guys 30 minutes a game for a seven game series is gonna work? Maybe it will who knows, but I’d be worried as a deadmonton fan
