John Glenn served 23 years as a U.S. Senator from Ohio. However in his third attempt to be elected, John Glenn was criticized by Democratic challenger Howard Metzenbaum in 1974 that he had never worked for a living.
From John Glenn: A Life of Service, a production of WOSU Public Media. Watch the documentary on July 17 at 8 p.m. on WOSU TV. Learn more at j.mp/18KDiC8.
In a debate at the Cleveland City Club Glenn gave what is now know as "Gold Star Mothers" speech where he argued service by him and others held jobs of duty and sacrifice to their country.

Except Metzenbaum did manage a comeback winning the other Senate seat in 1976. He would go on to serve three Senate terms from 1977 to 1995.

Pretty underhanded political move by Glenn since Metz never actually said anything about him never having a job. The critique was that as a career military man, he lacked knowledge of/experience with the business world...which potentially could be a fair argument to make. The biggest problem, other than how easily the words could be(and were) deliberately twisted around to deliver a political beatdown speech is that John Glenn was an executive for RC Cola after his military career. Ole Metz tried to pull a fast one and throw out some inaccurate statement to try and make Glenn look bad and it backfired BIG TIME. This didn't murder his career though, Metz woudl go on to serve 3 terms in the senate himself.

@@kamarrliekkabar1595 the problem is people don't listen like you and I listen to the extent that they used to including of course those who previously would have been having been drafted only a few of which would have bothered to dodge. In that audience presumably and I'm hope I'm not getting this wrong were plenty of former draftees people who accepted their called to duty when it was literal and did not just need a job which is happening to an increasing degree unfortunately. I don't know if Senator Glenn was previously drafted? But make no mistake it isn't merely more than a job to be so called and survive serving it is __also__ a job. These days people calculate out their APPARENT SWABBING ETC. hours LOL ...do the arithmetic and complain that they're being paid what a manager at McDonald's makes; IN response to such a commenter I 'asked' an actual question however unanswered in time. The man had ENlisted and was bitter grumbling about his 'pay.' I asked him why he was overstating his [hourly 😆] income? I mean he could have been more generous about the number of hours he was on "duty." It's not a nine-to-five/[midnight EVEN] even if it is common to party hard even during 'school' nights. I'm very curious about the retention NUmbers of the volunteer forces because that data goes beyond the simple percentage and there has been a change from the draftees who enlisted optionally to serve Beyond the mandatory and those who either complain about the back door draft or have replaced the former optional term servers. This leaves us with a military with fewer of the 'men' the future senator referred to. . . fewer STILL of the women EVER especially. Most people when they think of the draft don't remember adequately enough that it was trivial to dodge it if you were a genuine conscientious objector it was *NOT* even illegal to do so. There is an antonym to the "CONSCIENTIOUS" and too many of the volunteers fit that bill this is why IN FACT we had HISTORICALLY the draft and why we DO need it to come back. SO SIR YES: Among the distinguished by such nuance as the simple alliteration for emphasis that you APPRECIATE plenty of them would not have 'VOLUNTEERED' ["mersinAeneasLee"??? ] but for the draft... We tolled that 🔔 For Whom The Ring of America could ultimately be best heard from. From the child of everyBody including scum buckets like the Trumps because even such a man can have a decent child you never know until you sent him to camp; you never know until you give her a "chance" Not RECRUITMENT to serve at least. Our military DOTH NOW trains TRAGICALLY FAR TOO OFTEN future not Samurai BUT there is a different word one without the positive connotations THAT when my brother took me to see Seven Samurai WHERE made VERY clear. The talent embues the character and vice versa. My brother enlisted late-in-life but he would have made a fine Soldier had he been drafted I'm sure. Even finer than he made until he was tempted to leave for what is PUBLICLY understood to be a contractor. Had he been drafted he would have never been recruited by the contractor but would have likely realized his dreams to follow in the footsteps of Senator Kerry- to work for peace literally in the Department of State instead of failing to get hired there ... eventually reluctantly enlist for something however-necessary/very-different.

Furthermore, in addition to what John Glenn said, and to Metzenbaum's chagrin, I have commanded in the Army and although you don't put down a payroll your soldiers paid by the Armed Forces also are held accountable after sub hand receipting all their equipment from the Commander. The Commander is also responsible and held responsible for each soldier's life, health, welfare, morale, and success as a military member. John flew almost 150 combat missions, and our First American in Orbit, maybe Metzenbaum was misspeaking, if he wasn't he sure got it handed back to him by John Glenn. I am a conservative and John Glenn was a very long serving Democrat Senator. His politics are his business. Whether a person is Democrat or Republican should never be a liability, the fact they care and serve our nation is a tremendous profit.
