Dumb people think he helped his community when in reality his neighbors were in fear of him. He had his hand in their pockets if they owned businesses threatening to beat them to a pulp if they didn’t pay up and he also brought drugs into his own community for the parents kids to get hooked on.

When a guy comes up from nothing to eventually become the boss, it says a lot about his ambition, but it almost never works out. They get greedy, boastful and eventually become their own worst enemy and then self destruct. John's mouth, narcissism and brutality brought that whole family down, not too mention he simply didnt have the intelligence to run such a huge money making machine.

@Bob Edwards actually he did run it… know you’re facts. The gambinos earned more as a whole, more funneled down to the soldiers and rackets were booming indeed gotti’s reign, they got into Hollywood and came back into boxing as well. You really have no idea what you’re talking about. Without Sammy the rats testimonies and 56 other convictions credited to him alone as well as other families, John’s 5 conversations caught on tape out of thousands of hours would have only convicted Himself and the family still thrived under junior and the ruling panel as well.

That intro was nostalgic man… born and raised in the city- I remember as a freshman in high school watching this with my dad and my mom’s youngest brother. People were pissed. NYPD ran amuck especially in the 80’s and 90’s with extreme cases of police brutality and corruption. Average everyday people, truly respected/ were infatuated with organized crime. My grandparents knew Don Carlo, Galante, Dellacroce and a ballroom full of people worth of no nonsense mobsters. Interestingly enough, most of the Colombo’s lived in Gambino territory and most of the Gambinos lived in Colombo’s territory 😂 the section of Little Italy 🇮🇹 and Bensonhurst were my grandparents were from, you had no choice but to know Mobsters. Dellacroce used to come by for coffee with my grandmother after her father passed away and would leave a fist full of 100 bills every single time. My grandfather was most definitely connected. When he passed away the underboss and consigliere of the Luchesse’s were there as were a laundry list of associates and captains from families as far away as Jersey, New Orleans and Chicago. I won’t tell his full name but they called him “Gypsy”. Take that and do your research 😉 😂. He got the nickname because he was dark enough that he could pass for a Puerto Rican/ Spaniard/Cuban, etc but he was full blooded Sicilian from Sciacca, Sicily.

You and I remember another New York! I’m not sure if the public was aware of the corruption the NYPD. It was a very sad time in the City. Neighborhoods needed protection and the Mafia was right there to oblige. They killed each other. That was the amazing part. Unless you were in the line of fire, you had nothing to fear. Yes. They were gangsters who made money as racketeers and loan sharks. Don’t forget, there was an Irish mob as well which generally had it’s own NYPD within the actual NYPD. They were as ruthless as the Italians. It all came down to survival. Was my family involved? More than likely. Nothing I’m proud of. It’s all such a riveting time in NYC and makes for movie after movie. The truth of the mob became fodder for crime films. There were many in the City, entire neighborhoods who felt protected and they were. ZitiBoyLilo I wish you’d write a blog about your family.

The boss of bosses at the time of this was Genovese boss Gigante and eventually once he went down was probably Bonanno boss Joey Massina. The government laid off, or overlooked the Bonanno’s after the Donnie Brasco fiasco because they thought they were decimated. Massina put an end to social clubs and that kind of crap. In 1998, Gotti was diagnosed with throat cancer and sent to the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri, for surgery. Though the tumor was removed, the cancer was discovered to have returned two years later and Gotti was transferred back to Springfield, where he spent the rest of his life.Gotti's condition rapidly declined and he died on June 10, 2002, at the age of 61. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn announced that Gotti's family would not be permitted to have a Requiem Mass, but allowed a memorial Mass after the burial.

He won the chess of rats. Certain people simply aren't capable of making the cowardly moves Gravano did. It's not about brains, it's about morals. It wasn't any genius trick, he did what had and has been done many times. Using the authorities interest for the higher ups to get themselves a pass. Gravanos excuses for flipping are laughable and it's hilarious some people fall for it. He didn't flip on gotti, he flipped FULL STOP. He was facing life in prison and was scared to face justice so he agreed to flip and testify against EVERYONE in exchange for being let out. He testified and helped get countless guys locked up, most of which did nothing to him and said nothing about him. He testified against Vincent Gigante who wasn't even in his crime family. You have to be a complete coward to play that game he played.
