If I remember my fifth grade tour guide correctly, that's exactly what happened. Hancock was the first to sign the document and he signed it big because that's how big he thought everyone would sign. The cocky Hancock thing is a legend

I feel like this is exactly the legacy Hancock wanted

The underline from the K is also clearly just another line! He finished the K, took the quill or whatever off the parchment, and thought, "Huh, good place for an underline. Let's just get back on in there real quick..."

you know how when you write "happy birthday" you write a big "hap" then you realize uh-oh I'm not going to have enough room and so you squish together "py birthdy" ? I think his signature was kind of like that. he was the "hap"

“Start with a BIG ASS JOHN, followed by a BIG ASS HANCOCK, and now-ohhh no… okay button gwinnett you’re gonna have to squeeze your name in there somewhere”

"The pica of my signature" is such a brilliant turn of phrase. For those who don't know, pica is a disorder where someone compulsively eats non-food items. One of the most common forms is eating paper, so what he's saying is that John Hancock's signature has a disorder that causes it to "eat" up a lot of paper.

I think he was likely referring to the pica as the unit of typographic measurement, which is approximately 1/6th of an inch. But regardless of which he meant, he landed on a great turn of phrase that now also serves as a double pun.

They never say bitch in the episodes, so when John Hancock got referred like that I laughed so hard I choked on a piece of popcorn

Actually, Hancock wrote his signature that big because he wanted King George to be able to see it without needing to put on his glasses.
