John Hannah revolutionized the Offensive Guard position not just with sheer strength, but also because of his quickness and athleticism in space. Never before had the league seen a lineman with a skill set as varied as his, and he quickly became the focal point of the Patriots' run-heavy offenses of the 1970s and 80s. Absolutely devastating in both the trenches and the open field, it wasn't out of the ordinary for Hannah to pull 10-12 times in a single game, as there was little that defenders could do to counter him. He amassed 7 First-Team All-Pro selections in his career and was the most integral part of the legendary 1978 Patriots offense, which holds the single-season rushing yardage record to this day.

I'm a lifelong Steeler Fan, and I remember watching Mr Hannah play as a kid, now as a adult watching him here:: My God that man had the quickest feet I've seen a big man have outside of the Cowboys Nate Newton ever. Watching him handle Randy White in his prime with ease is incredible. Would've liked to see Mr Hannah win a Super Bowl. I still have that SI magazine from 81 . Mr Hannah I believe could've played in any era including today and he would have dominated again. Great vid thanx

Fun facts for the younger crowd and a little perspective: 1) John Hannah had 34" thighs. Each one! 2) He bent Joe Nash's face mask with a block (this was in the days when they were rubber coated steel) 3) Opposing defensive coaches told their DBs that when faced against Hannah one-on-one, just fall down. The theory was they were going down anyway, so might as well not get hurt doing it.

When I was a kid you often could get only one game so I watched the Patriots whether I liked it or not. I had started playing competitive tackle football and I was a linemen so often I would just watch John Hannah. Every play I just watched what Hannah did. I loved it. He was my favorite player of all-time until recently when Drew Brees overtook him but he's still right there at #2.

Wow, no comments - well let me say much thanks for grinding the tape and putting up such an amazing compilation. Long time NE fan and always heard great things about Hannah but somewhat embarrassed to find he is regarded as one of the the greatest if not THE greatest OL of alltime. What an amazing run blocker, absolutely devastating on those pulls and had a knack for keeping his balance and taking out multiple defenders. On pass blocking he seems to have been the type of player teammates would have loved as he constantly had his head on a swivle and was looking to help on their blocks or just to hit someone. Played his entire career in NE and only missed something like 5 games in a 10+yr career - which is crazy given his position and the rigours of it. Again great compilation, the music works really well and appreciate you sharing it with us. :-)

Ik nobody can fact track me but im related to john hanna, my grandma laura spearman babysitted him as a child and my dad grew up knowing him. All i know he is my 2nd uncle

John spoke at the Ohatchee athletic banquet in 1973! A year later i made the starting lineup as an offence lineman. Oh how i hated to pull. The screen and draw were my favorite plays. Step back to pass block and the sucker charges like a grizzlie bear, take him out and the back gets a big gain. The screen was difficult to pull off as a lineman but when it worked it was a beauty to see! Hannah was the best lineman of all time and a great person as well. I watched him when i attended Alabama football games.

Hog was like a snowplow! It must’ve been terrifying for a LB or especially a DB to see him coming at you. What a Freight Train! Can you imagine John Hannah at LG and Larry Allen at RG? 😳

Lately i've focused on Hog Hannah when watching older Patriots games. What a pleasure it is to watch him dominate in the trenches with blocking and pulling.

I never watched Hannah play but I remember that block he did vs the Raiders on NFL Films when I was young and that was the first time I was wowed by an O Lineman unprovoked. I'm so glad I saw it again, I thought I may have exaggerated it in my mind.

He is a very wealthy man. He became an investment banker in Boston after he retired from football. Then retired from that and moved home to Alabama to raise cattle and chickens.

I was a Patriots season ticket holder when John Hannah was pancaking defensive linemen, and linebackers. He was the best. What kept the Patriots from greater achievements back then was the Patriots trading Hanna's linemate Leon Gray to the Houston Oilers. Gray was the guy who opened the holes for Earl Campbell.

Thanks for putting this together. What a dominant player. these are big human beings he is pushing around. He was athletic also allowing him to sprawl out as was the case against the Oakland Raiders DB

Big John along with Zach Martin would be my starting guards on all time team…I read in Street & Smiths College football edition about Big John being an excellent water skier at that time. Excellent balance.

If you value Left Tackle as the most important position on the line, then Muñoz is the best O-lineman ever. But when you watch Hannah and see his impact in both the running and passing game, you can make the argument that his contributions transcend anything that can be done at left tackle. If I had to take one of those two I would be happy to just flip a coin.

He was very quick, strong and played low to the ground. You really had to earn your yards back then cuz holding was not allowed like now. I remember a defensive coach in 70s saying he would rather have his Dbs go out of bounds than have a dead safety after Hannah hit them....the 76 to 78 patriots were one of best running teams in nfl history thanks to Hannah and the late Leon Gray. The patriots yards per carry in 85 sb season was around 4.3 but in 86 it was only 2.8 mainly because Hannah retired.....he is still 2nd best player in patriots history although you can put gronk up there with 73 if he had played longer . They played real football back in 60s, 70s and 80s....more physical, no holding and much more running . The offensive players were not protected like they are now which is a good thing so there are less concussions

Might be my age=era of the sport, or bias as a Dallas fan, but for me it's Larry Allen. I started watching dallas in 1990, and grew up with them as my favorite team. I pretty much watched every game of Allens career. The guy never gave up sacks, his athleticism for his size was remarkable! He made all pro, not just pro-bowl, but ALL PRO as a tackle and a guard, playing every positions on the line except center! You don't get players like him often!

@@matthewburkholder1076 Hannah was All-Pro for 10 consecutive seasons: Seven first teams (76, 78-81, 83, 85) and three second teams (77, 82, 84). Allen and Munoz are both right up there with Hannah, but he doesn't have to give up anything to either one. Munoz was All-Pro 11 times (9 first /2 second from 1981-91). Allen was All Pro 7 seasons (6/1) from 1995-2001. Hannah played from 1973-85 (13 seasons). Munoz played from 1980-92 (13 seasons). Allen played from 1994-2007 (14 seasons). Munoz was seven years younger than Hannah. Their careers overlapped for six seasons. Allen was two decades after Hannah and didn't enter the League until two seasons after Munoz retired. Hannah was first team All-Pro his last season. Munoz was first team All-Pro his next to last season. Allen didn't make All-Pro any of his last six seasons.

I still like and prefer the uniforms and Patriot helmet logo shown on this excellent display of John Hannah's all-pro playing years. A sportswriter once wrote the replacement logo looked like, "some guy with a bad haircut taking a snooze." I agree

Notice also how clever he was after utterly pancaking his original assignment, he quickly changes sight and has a knack about finding the next guy to anihilate in order to gain bigger yards. It should be illegal to be that nimble for a guard, behold 260+ pounds of trench poetry in motion.

I was looking specifically for multiple blocking like the greats of the last 30 yrs do, i must have missed it!I I grew up hearing the legend of Hannah, but watching this, he doesn't live up to my perception of him. He was great, but I think Larry Allen was better

Rich Camarillo arguably a goat punter. Was at a game in old Foxboro when he kicked from his own end zone and the ball bounced through the other end zone.

He was compact but he was absolutely massive in the lower body & at his peak could probably walk right in to today's NFL and blow guys off the field just as he did in his era. Steve Hutchinson is probably the guy I saw play in my time that would be the closest comparison, but I don't think anyone aside from Larry Allen himself was pound-for-pound stronger at the guard position than Hannah was.

Pass protection at 3:00. Comes back off the left side, takes the pocket away from Grogan, surveys and spots Mecklenburg coming from the other side, takes him out. Not one guard other than Hannah could ever have made that play. Larry Allen certainly had the feet and strength, but that's not something you would ever have seen him do, especially because it just wasn't in the Cowboys' scheme. That play was so good, I just laughed. Absolutely brilliant.

He just dropped back because the blocking was handled on the left, he saw the guy coming from the right, and blocked him. See linemen do this all the time, Larry Allen most definitely could've, and did on so many occasions. 🙄

God I love mean offensive lineman. John Hannah is one of the greatest O lineman of all time. Im not sure there has ever been a more agile Guard in history, which for his size is incredible. Three times in four years being named the best O lineman by his peers in the NFLPA. Thats remarkable, especially with guys like Munoz, Jacoby, Grimm, Stephenson, and countless others out there.

What amazes me is that he played at about 260; Logan Mankins played LG later for the Patriots at about 50 pounds heavier. But Hannah did everything so well, and with such force, but was so mobile on the pulling plays. Best guard ever? Could be.

Without a doubt he was truly the best guard ever. Pulls kick outs pass protection. Second level so fast and powerful. Pure controlled aggression,with great vision and smarts. I think lineman should go back to playing at 265 to 285. Look at mark stepnoski played at 260 and he beat a lot of 300 pounders. Not in the ring of honor wake up Jerry.. Hannah is truly the best. Face it he beat the best.
