John lives in a small grassy area right in the middle of Downtown Atlanta. He had a rough childhood and never learned to read, which has proven to be a real roadblock in finding a job.
For the past six years, John has been in and out of homelessness. Although he has family, he says he stays on the streets by choice; although it's not uncommon for a couch surfing arrangement to go bad quickly.
Although John's situation is rough, he maintains a positive attitude. As he says in his own words, to get up out of homelessness, You've got to want it.
The thing is, when someone is ready, we need to be there to help.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

He may have had a learning disability like dislexia, so he never learned to read. Such things must be dealt with early on, but John probably fell through the cracks and no one noticed or paid attention when he was young. He was probably completely overlooked in school. Learning disabilities are much more common than most people realize.

No matter where these people come from they need more than just a shelter and a free meal. These people need a place to clean up for an interview, learn to read and write, nice clothes to look presentable at an interview. These are the things that an employer looks at, and when homeless these are the things that are hard to come by!

Aha! Family won't always be around, 'man,' so you got to start taking your life seriously and stop being trifling and/or simply just live and don't complain!

One of the biggest, if not the biggest leading cause of homelessness: People, like God, make the worst of assumptions about people, in general, that keep those who are down from even having a chance of getting up. No solutions given. No jobs offered. No place offered to go. No socks given. No ideas to get the person out of the situation. Just the worst of the worst of assumptions about the person for being in the situation. People he never met before, and never even heard of before. So, no back story learned, beyond what was said in the video. But, assumptions, still.
