There were so many hints at a good theme only to be totally missed. Some bad luck can lead to stuff like community, understanding, inner strength, and later opportunity. Meanwhile, excessive good luck can lead to complacency, less empathy, and being less equipped to deal with inevitable bad luck. They should have showed the flaws with the good luck world and the best of the bad luck world. When the system breaks have the bad luck people immediately empathize and offer their support in keeping things running.

That actually would be a very sweet plot point. It paints Sam’s bad luck as not just wanting a better life for herself, but the only family she has in the world. And her sister getting adopted by another family would be both painfully understandably sad but also touching

Makes more sense that she's more found family than actual family--if she was really her sister, she would just come up with a plan to be able to take guardianship over her sister. We've seen that exact dynamic in a lot of animation (Lilo & Stitch for example), so it's not a stretch. But found family, a kid she was fond of at the orphanage that's basically her little sister but not legally so, it checks out that it'd be more complicated.

An adult sibling can _usually_ get guardianship of their minor sibling (as long as they can demonstrate themselves to be an adequate guardian).

To be fair, i went into this movie exepting this exact kind of display of "bad luck", not only because it is a children movie but also because i feel like itd be, to some extent, offensive to call horrible situations "bad luck". Like if someone i know just got abused and kicked out, rendering them homeless, im not gonna think "oh such bad luck" nor will i say "youre really unlucky". Similarly, if someone told me that, id probably reply "thats what you have to say about this?!" Idk i wouldnt say its bad luck to be oppressed or come across someone that abuses you, i feel id categorise it as victimhood instead? Like something/someone caused the bad thing to happen. Meanwhile bad luck is just bad luck, it just happens on its own

I get the feeling they're trying to pander to privileged kids who still think they're victims because of said aforementioned mild inconveniences.

Isn't it? Toilets here flush when the sensor sees a change in light. If you cover the sensor, it will flush immediately. Even if it was purely motion based, reaching toward the sensor would register a movement. Sure, it won't flush again until you uncover it, but that doesn't change the fact that it flushed when you covered the sensor.

True, the design of the main character is very generic, I think the creators were afraid she wasn't gonna look "pretty and marketable." She has the generic typical female pixar protag big eyes, small nose, and small mouth design. To top it off, her outfit is also bland. I think they should've took risks for her design.

OOH, bad haircut is a hilarious and memorable idea or like cowlicks she can NEVER tame, but when her balance is right, they finally settle down (except maybe one). 👍🏿

Hard agree, I love the Unicorn's design, and also the Dragon Boss! Then the protagonist is so bland?

One thing that also bugs me is that Sam is suppose to be freshly 18, but she looks 25. I feel like they could have earned so much more sympathy if they showed just how young so she is. Like her living on her own in a free apartment and having a job is way more sad if she looks like a teenager rather than some twenty year old.

Normally I am pretty tired of these selfish angry characters that Hollywood is always producing. But think about it, this time... In this case... This poor girl has been up for adoption for about a hundred times, and every time not only wasn't she adopted, the potential parents didn't even show at all. Imagine how emotionally SCARRING that has to be. Here's this girl, keeping an upbeat attitude, doing everything right, probably working hard at school, and at exams always pulling the one question she didn't prepare for. She has done nothing wrong, and yet for some reason, the world itself seems to be set against her, because bad luck is just attracted to her. I could see her breaking down and yelling. "It's not fair! How is this fair?! I work hard, I clean up, I am always nice. And the world itself is engineered against me." And heck, if she was chasing the Lucky Penny for HERSELF. Would actually make a whole lot of sense, that she wants it because she lived her entire life being covered in bad luck for no reason, isn't it only fair she should be allowed to be lucky? And I could even see her trying to break the luck machine on purpose because in HER mind it would be a natural conclusion that it just isn't fair that some people are lucky without having earned it, and other people are unlucky without having done anything to deserve it. And then HER big character moment has to be the realization that all of these creatures shouldn't be punished for what isn't their fault either, heck MEETING the bad luck monsters could be the big turning point where she see how they live and how they turn it around and laugh at it, getting through it in a way she hasn't figured yet. And there are ways to turn bad luck into good luck, and there are unlucky things that happened to her that is turned into good luck things she doesn't want to be without. And she rises and fixes it. That... Could have been a very great movie, she could have been a very interesting character. But she's kind of nothing, sadly. I like that she's so nice and likeable, I want more characters like that back in entertainment, but this one time... It might have been better if she wasn't.

The movie kinda made me feel hopeless, like yes Sam is bland buti still kinda felt because all I could think was "so she just has to live her life with things constantly being hard for literally no reason and we're not gonna say why? I think Dazz might have said this or some other comments said this, but many studios are copying that Pixar style. And there is a certain amount of concepts that can actually be formed into ideas. Plus, Pixar is getting more people with tramua issues/heritage stories and etc. to create some movies of their own, and putting a unique animated spin on it, can make a great film. Sorry if this gets a bit controversial, but one of my new favorites they have made was Elemental. Did the marketing suck? Of course it did, you can't convince me otherwise. But the actual movie in my opinion was great. I like how real it seemed for an immigrant story, and making the elements of nature characters was actually pretty interesting, and Wade was probably the first fictional character, emotional wise, that I actually saw myself in. That of course is an opinion more than anything though.

Especially Pixar since their magic faded years ago.

My go to example is Squidward: in GOOD episodes, (usually) bad things happen either because it's his own fault and/or he's a jerk whereas in BAD episodes he suffers repeatedly because watching someone else's misery is somehow funny.

it's bc they barely even move. The feet aren't parted for at least some kind of interesting stance, and the movements are slow and halfhearted instead of actually putting their energy into it. Which is, you know, what makes dances look good. If the animation was a little more snappy and energetic, and she was moving her feet, it'd look fine.

I feel it’s because of the static camera angles that it doesn’t feel as impressive as it should be. Maybe it would have felt more dynamic if the camera flipped angles along with the characters when switching from one pull to another, giving off the weighty feeling of gravity dragging you around.
