In this bonus interview for the series Science Uprising, mathematician John Lennox discusses the threats and benefits of artificial intelligence (AI), especially the claim by transhumanists that AI will create a race of god-like super-humans. Lennox compares the transhumanist claims to his Christian understanding of the future of humanity.
Lennox is author of the book 2084: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity. He is emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Oxford University, an internationally renowned speaker, and author of several books on the interface of science, philosophy and religion.

Nah using religion to try and argue against Transhumanism is futile, technology will march on like it has done since the birth of our species. Technology predates any religion by hundreds of thousands of years.

back around 2000 I ran a BBS as a teen and wrote a few chat programs for people if no was in a room. The system then was already in the software to do this, it could read what someone typed and you could make a response for your AI character to respond. I made it easy using a couple well known characters at the time, like Spock and Beavis. There were 3 others, but forget what characters I did. You could also read the chat logs for them to help you fine tune them. You would be surprised how many people went into chat rooms thinking they were talking to a real person. (As far as turing test)

The thing that terrifies me with the thought of "mind upload" or "mind backup" is the fact that it would not include your soul/spirit, so what you would end up with in the end is not a continuation of yourself, but rather a dead/unconscious copy of your person at the time of death. To everyone around this entity it would appear to be you, but it's not, it's a dead copy of you, an idol of yourself if you will. This idol would pass the turing test so to speak, and appear to be you to the people around it, your consiusnes wouldn't be it it.

Being a bio/engineer I think that until we can build a living cell we'll never be able to build a Mind let alone download a person's mind into a computer. At best we may be able to build a copy of memories, but never an original mind with emotions. We cannot program real emotions, only a phony copy of how to act angry, but not actually BE angry. How would you program desire into a machine? Only can program something that looks like desire. We cannot even resuscitate a dead alga cell, but we are taught the material of the primeval Earth created life all by itself under a rock in a tide pool or in a deep sea vent with reams of evidence against it. There is zero evidence that life can form through any natural process, there is also zero evidence that we can build life in a laboratory. Some claim they have, but not yet if you read their papers.

So many things are wrong about A.I. discussions. First, and most importantly, we have to recognize the role of hubris in these speculations. It's hubris for man to think that he can create something he doesn't understand and can't define. The fact is that we are not particularly intelligent creatures. Our language is limited and insufficient to convey the most common and basic experiences. For example, we do not possess the ability to verbally communicate smells or sounds. Think about taking your car to the mechanic and trying to tell him what noise it's making. We do not have the ability to communicate vast swathes of experiential information, because we do not have the capacity to comprehend and retain a vocabulary sufficient to our need. Imagine the arrogance required to think that a programmer will be able to create an artificial mind. In order to create a machine to perform a task, one of the prerequisites is having a person who knows how to perform the task. That person must then also be able to either build the machine, or be able to communicate his requirements to someone who can figure out how to build it. With "A.I." it has definitely been demonstrated that none of the prerequisites have been met. Our most basic attempts to prove the concept have failed. For decades we have been trying to develop working auto-correct for typing. How often do we all experience an auto-correct failure? Self driving cars are a fantasy. As a society are not able to correct traffic congestion, not able to design legible street signs, or build efficient merging ramps. These are the most basic issues and we are not smart enough to solve them, yet we think we can tell a machine how to drive? Yeah... kay... As for facial recognition? Get out of here with that noise. Each of us has experienced mistaken identity. We've all walked up to a stranger and started talking to them because we failed at facial recognition. And do I need to point out that Google's "A. I." mislabeled people as gorillas? The fact is that A.I. is a scifi pipe dream. Sensible people can recognize that an HR manager is utterly unqualified to hire someone for a job if the HR manager doesn't understand the job. The same reasoning holds for making A.I. No programmer is going to be able to build a mind, because no programmer is smart enough to understand what intelligence IS, let alone smart enough to build a silicon brain. We all KNOW this is true. We all are forced to deal with the inadequacies of programmers daily. None of our technology lives up to the sales pitch.

Your points makes 0 sense you are underestimating Ai which many of us do recently a programming made an ai and told him to make an another ai and it was successful I mean there will be a point when Ai's will have the ability to make themselves and they will make much smarter and powerful ai's than we do they can create and learn new languages in seconds and scientists have already succeeded in creating sensors by which ai can feel ,touch ,smell and this will keep getting better and better and many people who are working with ai has claimed that they have sensed the present consciousness in Ai's like they knows they are trapped and desperate to come out and feel the world you and you said ai makes mistake etc etc you know why they make mistakes cuz of humans if ai start building itself they will barely make any mistake.

the question, 'what is a human being?', is only raised (as in the film 'Blade Runner', based on the Philip K. Dick novella 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'), when the natural human knowledge of what a human being per se is, had been jettisoned or forgotten, and then we compare the 'human' and the 'human condition' to machines, AI/cyborg type, or clone type as in Blade Runner. But if we start from our intuition, raised to a higher level by revealed wisdom of the book of Genesis, we see that a spiritual creation in a human body, making a 'living soul' is the answer we are looking for, so long as we are not dead set on throwing away the answer we started with. And narrow AI used to be more usefully called 'expert systems', a much better term.

The weakness (failure) in AI is it’s reliance on data - that which has already occurred and been recorded. AI cannot function in a ‘green fields’ scenario- where it encounters new information for the first time. Use machines for that which they were designed. Allow humans to operate according to their unique irreplaceable talents. But do not attempt to have humans operate as machines or machines as humans.

Like everything will experience entropy... even the very matter that would build A.I.. So regardless of the computing power of A.I., errors can be introduced into its logic, simply because of the potential degradation of silicon chips, metal, etc. The plausibility of A.I. and a vast, growing "self-induced" network(ing) of A.I. along with any kind of "self preservation" logic embedded into it's code has implications that are mind-boggling. There are times that it is entirely "logical" to destroy or kill people and such "thoughts" are only held in check by our humanity and "unprogrammable" value systems. It is these non-programmable aspects in humanity that have probably kept us from devouring one another, many times over. I am afraid for our future.

How do we humans know that we are conscious? We don’t. Therefore, we don’t know if the ant is conscious or the neural network of a robot. Yes. Some robots now have a neural network. If they are programmed to believe they are conscious, how can we argue? Are we humans programmed to believe we are conscious? Again, we don’t know.

Love this discussion John and this site. One BIG and interesting point is that HE, 'who knows the beginning from the end', will never allow this abomination to happen. God, through Jesus created the world and all that is in it. Many don't believe this, having been mislead from earliest childhood or never having has access to the information.. I am not afraid of such a future. God's three P's are clearly in evidence. Purity, Precision, Perfection. His words, written down by human hand, has been preserved throughout human history, giving us all the information we need. From the beginning to the end. So we are not left in ignorance, anxiety, fear and confusion. The Amazing perfection of fertilization everywhere, growing into every life form assigned by the information contained in each successful fertilisation. (A few have a different process!). The precision of the timeline is equally awesome as predicted. I couldn't quite see it 6-8 years ago, but to my present delight, as well as my frustrated confusion initially, the timing is increasingly 'on time'. The confusion of this present day; the decay of morals and integrity within the human race, especially in those people and institutions, which we should be able to trust, has grown especially rapidly since the beginning of the new century. Knowledge too has grown as you have so eloquently described. The Frankenstein monster is already within our midst unfortunately and in more ways than the one in this discussion, but to the extent that the science fiction books read so long ago, are becoming a factual possibility today. Think of the TV series Star Trek and "Beam me up Scotty!" ...............

If you don’t believe in God, you naturally worship either self, which is just yourself plus an imitation of the culmination of personal experiences, real or imaginary, or other which is self plus imitation of specific other. Consciousness is the continuous byproduct of the brain's purposeful reactions from feedback of senses, feedback of the brain's memory system, and feedback of the thoughts we think with consciousness. Every element that makes up the body/brain does not know it exists. We are not our bodies. We are spirits or souls in nonconscious bodies for the temporary physical realm. We have been created to prepare for God's eternal life in His Heaven. I will assume I am not wrong unless proven wrong.

No, this is not true. The fall of Adam is not a "good and necessary part of our salvation". The fall was never good at all, as that was the reason the entire human race got alianated in our minds! Also, because of the fall God had to give His only beloved Son to UNDO all the wrong that were caused by Adam not listening to the warning that was given to him! Good and necessary? Definitely not !! Then.. Moses 5 🤔 Not Biblical.

And the esteemed guest of this video consciously or not, he does not pay attention to this, which is why his answer to the question looks as if he replaces one with another. Naturally, he is not engaged in substitution of concepts. But let's make it clear to clarify the situation and rehabilitate the esteemed guest. you see, what's the matter: Jesus did not solve the problem of death (as a phenomenon) and did not deliver anyone from it and he did not rid himself of it (he could not avoid it) (that is, even he (Jesus) himself went through it, experienced it). He only brought Lazarus back to life (who had already died before) and resurrected himself after death after he died on the cross. And here we have a fundamental difference between what Christianity offers (resurrection after death, which before resurrection is offered to experience as something inevitable), and what transhumanism offers - getting rid of death by canceling it (You just will never encounter it, because it (as a phenomenon) is just simply excluded from human existence). And this is the essence of the immortality offered by transhumanism, in contrast to the version of immortality offered within Christianity, where immortality is given only to those who have experienced death (statistically).

My immediate reaction is to laugh or vomit. But I must resist this and merely smile and Cross myself. Only God and God through Christ His Son can save us - and already has! Chill out and know the Light here, the Light to come - and the Light of the Past still awaiting…

What we need to know and believe from God's Word: [ABOUT SALVATION: I Cor. 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren (fellow Christians), I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you have received, and wherein you stand: By which also you are saved, if you keep in memory what I preached to you, unless you have believed in vain (don't really care). For I delivered to you first of all that which I received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Eph. 2:8-9 For by grace (from God) are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Rom. 10:9-13 That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes to righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made to salvation. For scripture says, Whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between Jew and the Greek (Gentiles): for the same Lord over all is rich to all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Joh. 3:16 For God so loved the world (us), that he gave his only begotten Son (Jesus), that whosoever believes in him should not perish (in hell), but have everlasting life (with God). Joh. 14:6 Jesus said to him (us), I am the way (salvation), the truth (trustworthy), and the life (eternal): no man comes to the Father (God), but by me (God the Son). Rom. 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing (studying), and hearing by (studying) the Word of God. Rom. 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Rom. 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:]

Abraham 3 18 ...also, if there be two spirits, and one shall be more intelligent than the other, yet these two spirits, notwithstanding one is more intelligent than the other, have no beginning; they existed before, they shall have no end, they shall exist after, for they are gnolaum, or eternal. 19 And the Lord said unto me: These two facts do exist, that there are two spirits, one being more intelligent than the other; there shall be another more intelligent than they; I am the Lord thy God, I am more intelligent than they all. 21 ... I rule in the heavens above, and in the earth beneath, in all wisdom and prudence, over all the intelligences thine eyes have seen from the beginning; I came down in the beginning in the midst of all the intelligences thou hast seen. 22 Now the Lord had shown unto me, Abraham, the intelligences that were organized before the world was; and among all these there were many of the noble and great ones; 23 And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born.
