Dale, I went 1 size down from brannock (8) and had to return them to get an 8.5 which are the same as a 8.5 Red Wing. I had also got the Lofgren Engineers in 8.5 following sizing advice and had to sell them, I need a 9 in the engineers. I am a 8 in 2030, 2040, & 2045 Viberg. Yea if you were to get some definitely go with 8.5, I think we are the same size in most of our footwear after watching your videos.

Interesting. I find that the engineers fit too loose at the same size as the lace ups. But would be too tight on the forefoot if I sized down. And according to the JL team all their boots should be the same size

@@orlog3343 The engineers were killing my toes (width wise), couldn't wait to take them off at the end of the day. I feel the toebox on the combats is wider than the engineers, if they were the same I might still be able to do the engineers at that size. But not every last will work for everyone.

@Clinton McCool I get that, but I mean basic size rather than fit. When I say “fit” as an example, in all my 8D boots, I fit in them, but in some, they’re narrow at the ball, others, the facings nearly meet etc while others don’t. But by “size” I mean I get into them properly with room at the toes, no sloppy fit etc. The example I have of what I mean is this - I’m 8.5D on Brannock, and mostly 8D in boots. Makes sense as most bootmakers say to go half size down. But Oak Street says to order TTS and my 8.5D Trench Boots are perfect. When I align the OSB with the GS Diesel….same length! Differences are shape of toe box etc, all down to different lasts. Why don’t all the bootmakers who say go half down just rename their sizes to half up and say go TTS?! Very unhelpful for new boot buyers more used to fitting sneakers. Don’t get me started on sneaker sizes LOL!

@@cincyreds62 I have spent a lot of effort and time on Boot foot considerations so the following for me are my experiences. Brannock I find is a good base point but does not cover all size considerations and I am not saying the Vibergs all fit the same, the Wholecut and the 310 have the most room. I am just saying they fit well enough for me. I gave up with trying to get that exact fit on every boot. Some boots fit better than others but they are acceptable and good and most important comfortable! I recently purchase a pair of the Sagara boots in the crust Horsebutt from Standard and Strange and they recommended a 9.5 with an average volume foot for a 10D Brannock, I think that a 9 may have fit and probably should of ordered both sizes returning one, I have not worn these much yet and I will to see how they break in. Also maybe my foot may a little smaller than average volume. I purchased a pair of Whites Smoke Jumpers where I told Bakers that I am a 9.5 D in Wesco they recommend a 9 C in the Whites, they fit snug but very comfortable, the lace gap is larger that other boots but I like the fit. At the end of the day as Jason at Divison Road said there is only about 1/8" or so difference in length between 8.5 and 9 but try and get as snug a fit as possible and the boot will mold to your foot but the key is the what is too snug??. The Viberg 2030 I purchased in a 9 fits ok, it just looks bigger and there is obviously more room but it is does not seem too big where I have heel slip etc. at least at this point. I have not worn them much so the jury is still out on this. The Viberg 2030 & especially the 2040 fit tight but have molded well to my feet. I am lucky that my son is the same Brannock size as me. My second toe is longer than my big toe and his big toe is bigger than mine. But he fits the 8.5 Viberg 2030 & 310 fine. What I get out of everyone who talks about fit is get as snug as you can and that seems to work only it is a little unnerving when you are going through the "fit" process wondering if they will. Case in point when I purchase the JL's in the 8.5 and I use the finger test between my heel and the heel of the boot it seemed that it was the same as my Viberg's, but the JL did not give enough in the toe area where the Vibergs seemed to give more but that is my experience. Good luck on you fittings- Best regards Bill

This is the first actual John Lofgren boot review on KZfaq! Their M43 boots are the best looking ones imo. All of the JL boots I’ve tried have been comfortable immediately, even when not sized perfectly. Sizing can be tricky with these. Viberg says UK sizing is 1 full size down from US. JL says UK sizing is a half size down from US. Based on my experience JL is half a size down from brannock and a full size down from regular sneakers and dress shoes (same with Viberg). Many people also say they go same as Red Wing size but they never mention what width they take in red wing as this could change the fit entirely… some say they take half a size down from red wing too. Just some thoughts on sizing in general; I’ve done a lot of research recently and realized that sneaker brands measure their shoe size based on the actual length of the insole (usually the insoles are stamped half a size down from the size you actually wear). So I measure 27.3cm feet and wear a size 28 (10 US) in sneakers. Which makes complete sense when you think I’m terms of lasting and building a shoe, they use a last that’s 27cm for example, then you should wear a size 28. I think this is the reason why some brands fit differently, when they try and say a 27 foot will fit a 27 last but obviously that’s physically incorrect. TLDR; brands should come to a consensus and use actual feet measurements instead of brannock to strip away the unnecessary simplification that seems to cause more confusion and inaccurate sizing

I just bought my first pair of boots. John Lofgren Ludlow Boots. I went ahead and ordered the same size I normally go 10.5E. Had I ordered a size smaller I would’ve been screwed. I’m glad I stayed with 10.5 E let me tell you something, in 10 minutes the shoes were so comfortable and I wore them for eight hours at work. Not a problem. I had ordered Sagara boots, at 10.5E , and I needed just half inch more I should’ve ordered and 11E. I fell over my chair when I saw the quality of the John Lofgren boats impeccable work of art. I just ordered another pair but this time the black one.

Beautiful boot. A little too bulbous for my taste, but I love a good broguing on a cap toe. I don't understand the appeal of a plain toe. That being said, you could have made this video half the time if you hadn't kept talking about what you think the size is by looking on it, and just actually tried it on and said "Yeah, a little roomy. 1/2 size down would be good, full size might be too small" and called it a day. 😎

instead of going on and on about whether it should be an 8.5 or 9 , and how their physical size compares to the other boots, wouldn't it be easier just to try it on, and then comment on how it fits.

I passed on guessing my size earlier this year on the JL Montagna, when they were in stock. Now the prices have increased, and I still think I'll need to order two sizes and return one for refund.

I have these John Lofgren CXL timber combat boots in 8.5 and they’re amazing. I have 5 pairs of John Lofgren boots. I also have the black shinki hikaku teacore horsebutt. The horsebutt is a much thicker and stiffer leather. These CXL timber are very comfortable and they moulded to my feet very quickly. Because I’m 8.5 in John Lofgren combat boots I ordered 8.5 in their CXL natural engineer boots. They were too big so I had to return them. The customer service was excellent.

For me I wear a 10.5EE in Iron Rangers and the 11 in John Lofgren combat boots. I find the heel to toe on JL's to be slightly smaller the no. 8 If you have a high instep like me and winder foot then go a half size up from your Iron Rangers.

Is the overall visual assessment of overall length as important as heel to ball/flex joint? I visited Standard and Strange in lower Manhattan (NYC) and sized and bought there. That was a great experience. I went 1/2 size down on Viberg 2030. While Chromexcel or kudu have some stretch, I think it is best to size slightly large rather than thinking of stretch, and size in the afternoon- feet swell. Keep up the good work Dale!

I am a Brannock 10 D I have purchased my Viberg's in 8.5 in all lasts 2030, 2040, 2055, 240, 1035, 310 and wholecut. The 2030 and 2040 fit tightest. At one point I thought that the 8.5 fit was to tight and I purchased a 9 in the 2030 last. It turns out the 8.5 fit is snug and all they need is some break in. I saw somewhere that if you put extra layers of socks and walk around the house a boot can break in faster. I used three layers of socks and wore the Viberg's for a couple of hours and it works. This is the only manufacturer I do this with. I originally purchased a combat JL 8.5 and they were to short in the toe after wearing them for 3 hours, tried again and also tried to get them stretched to no avail. I now own three pairs of JL combat in a 9 and they fit great! I am also a 9.5D in Alden Truebalance, Barrie and Grant last's. Grant last fits very snug was a little at first but broke in. The sizing that Standard and Strange recommends for all JL boots works for me when I use the size they recommend based on Alden's Truebalance sizing, not my Viberg sizing.
