This is the first interview that I've seen with Johnny Rotten in his younger years where he didn't blow up on the interviewer. I like this interview.

Janet was exceedingly rare among interviewers at the time in that she met the artists on their level. Too many reporters and interviewers were either antagonistic to artists or too up their own arses to do that. She was willing to banter with John here; to let the conversation draw out the answers.

I’ve always thought Janet Street Porter is more talented and versatile than she’s ever been credited for. She is completely unruffled and she’s one of the very few interviewers who broke the ice with a young John Lydon

This is a great clip. Not just because of the interview, but the area they are walking around. A very differnt looking Covent Garden in London. Looks like the place is still the original market rather then the tourist trap it is today.

You are witnessing the beginning of the indie movement .Shortly after this he created Public Image Ltd. A company, not a band. Johnny speaks of the crowd only being interested in the clothes and the colour of his hair . Musing lyrics on the edge of making history again . Ironically many so called indie band have no idea of this . Fans flock to hipster chic like flies on a carcass. The bands put up production costs and give control to industry masters. Check mate rock and roll. So occupy ?

Thisis such great footage....it shows here again what a very special charismatic character he was.......Wished he had stayed more in "rock" music though; like the absolutely stunning "Public Image" track itself , instead of all that a-tonal introverted stuff he started to put out. _____While it's all very commendable that he never sold out and all that.... he always used the Pistols' legacy as his mealticket to keep on generating interest...in his PiL ventures....

A little fun fact about Janet Street Porter, the interviewer here. She appeared as an extra in the 1966 Antonioni film Blow Up. She's in the scene where the Yardbirds are playing in the nightclub. A quick part, where she is dancing wearing a silver overcoat and orange striped trousers. She however, did not have hair that looked like rhubarb at that time.

For me, it was a case of "Love the message, where are my ear-plugs?" (I was a baby-boomer) The pure energy of punk was exhilarating, because a generation of youth wanted to change things. Punk was never despondent, and change things it certainly did! Blind obsequious deference to authority, was firmly nailed into it's coffin! with a sharpened stake through it's rotten heart, but like the B movies, take care it can return from the grave. The worship of mortals with feet of clay is compulsive!

Johnny said it was pointless to make another Sex Pistols album. That surprised me. In a time like this we need someone to spill the beans behind the government's doings. I do wish there were more people like Johnny Rotten, but not too many. There's not much bands who are strong enough to not accept awards, to not be on TV, to take on anybody, etc.

If only you all had stayed together at least for one more album. It's like the sadness I have for Joy division just knowing how much they would have been loved if they could have come and had the right American tour and after the first had a second. When the right English men get together to make music it is magic and we do appreciate that here. I guess it's men and women when the women have the chance because I love me some New order.

@mxrty78 I think John was always honest...he always said what he felt. Just in most interviews, he was stuck in a TV studio after waiting in the green room for fuck-knows-how-long, being asked idiotic and/or patronizing questions by - let's face it - morons. Here, he's out and about, on the streets of London, and clearly in a good mood (best I've ever seen him in for an interview), being asked reasonable questions by someone he respects, and who respects him. Same honesty, different situation.
