One of the greatest challenges that Christianity faces today is the practical rediscovery of its age-old traditions of prayer and contemplation, and one of the principle attempts to do this in recent times was begun by the Benedictine priest John Main. Inspired by a Hindu teacher, he developed a way of Christian meditation, and the Christian Meditation movement that he founded has spread around the world. We are going to visit the World Community for Christian Meditation in London and talk to Laurence Freeman, its current director, and two of its members. Then we will visit Thomas Ryan, the director of Unitas, an ecumenical center for spirituality and Christian meditation in Montreal, in order to find out what this Christian meditation movement is all about.

Thank you for this highly inspiring video. I am certainly moved & will be continuing my thirst to know more about Christian Meditation. To me, it is like seeing God face to face while I am alive...this is the thought that passed my mind while watching each of the speakers. Thank you once again! 🙏🏼

My spiritual Seeking has become intimately more abundant and experienced thru my daily practice of meditation. Learning to be still.

There is indeed a deep need for discovering the depth of spiritual strength in a world that is so bombarded by superficialities. Meditation gives us courage to love and be loved and to search for Truth. Strength of spirit is possible for every human being. Thank God for the communities who pray together.

I just wonder if Laurence devoting his life to John Main and his idea was worth it? Wouldn't it be better to admit some of the conservative Catholics get it right? That saying the Rosary works for them. I don't like the word "maranatha" by the way. Can we just sit in silence, listening to God?

The mind will not be still sitting in silence, listening. If you watch what happens when you try you will race through all sorts of thoughts that have nothing to do with God. The purpose of a mantra or formula is to evacuate the mind of extraneous thought and allow the Spirit to speak - to rise above judgement and just "be" - participate in the beatific vision known to the great christian mystics. Marantha - correctly marana - tha - aramaic for "come, our Lord". Couldn't be a bad thing.

antidepressant11 saying the rosary is discursive, does not center your mind as the repetition of one word does.

@@hilarylazard7554 as I remember the rosary became a kind of mantra. Certainly lots of repetition of same prayers.

@@antidepressant11 the idea behind the repetition of a word or word phrase is to eliminate discursive thought. Typified in Christianity by hesychasm.

is there a danger in making meditation like a false God? That we value it more than the God of Israel? Yes I know there is a sacred word. But to say meditation is the answer is dangerous. Surely Christ is the answer.

Yes Christ is the answer. It is a way(not the only way) of being with God. This does not replace other ways of praying. Hope this helps. Ps 65:1 (properly translated) says "To you O God silence is praise ".

@@Peterbyl1 Well if you're a Christian, then the main point of your faith should be that Christ is the only way to God. "Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6
