UberGamezHD Yeah, uh, as one who has locked himself up for long periods of time and done nothing but bang away at one instrument or another, I have to say that is not some kind of easy road to musical ability. I've done it for years and still play like someone who has been given a very powerful but unfamiliar instrument as treatment for a degenerative nerve disorder. This guy really is talented.
@pawelzabicki7785
@pawelzabicki7785 7 жыл бұрын
But still, he's been doing it for years for six hours a day completely immersing himself in a process and cutting off of any distractions. Then + more hours with bands, on stage etc., thousands of hours. + he is smart, intelligent, with deep understanding of what he's doing + he has great music intelligence + he has a deep respect for music and he simply loves it + he is rather emotionally stable and very consistent person And all of that is contributing to his talent (and some other components :P)

When do people stop judging him based on some things he did back in 2009/2010?! 5 years have passed and some still don't see how much he changed. And yes, he made some very stupid decisions back then, I agree. But that shouldn't be an excuse for still calling him a douchebag or something. You should't judge him on these interviews and stuff. He grew up and regrets it. If you payed a little more interest in him you could have known this. Just respect him. He's a good man with a good heart.

Many can’t separate him from his Top-40 type music like, “Your Body is a Wonderland” (def not his best moment). He’s starting to appear on “Best Guitarist” lists - some, but but not all. There are still quite a few 100 Best Guitarist lists that omit his name. For those that don’t know his best stuff - their loss. I didn’t discover him until a few years ago when I started learning guitar. He’s an amazing musician, definitely one of the best working today. I think I saw someone on this board claim that his lead guitar work is weak. I think that’s silly. In fact, the thing that most makes him special is his ability to play so well in any genre and any style - acoustic folk, rock, blues - fingerstyle, pick, hybrid - lead, rhythm - he does it all really really well.

How would you infer that? I'm not saying that the only good music is just solo guitar w/ vocal and nothing else. Just that I like a more stripped down, less tinkered-with sound, at least for some songs. I certainly think a lot of Mayer's songs could have benefitted from a "less-is-more" treatment.

If you guys like John Mayer, you should check out Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" album and specifically the song, "River Man." Nick was from England and came to fame during the early 1970s. Unfortunately, people didn't recognize his musical genius, and he committed suicide at the age of 26. Timeless art found its way, though, and his music rose in popularity long after his death. His music was very similar to John Mayer's "Born and Raised" album. Let me know what you guys think. Feel free to reply with other artists or songs that are worth checking out. Question for guitarists: Okay, so he appears to be in standard tuning and has his capo on the fourth fret. He's holding that one bass note on the sixth string, _seventh_ fret with his _thumb_, which turns out to require this unbelievably agonizing (for me at least) hand contortion that I can manage to hold for all of maybe thirty seconds before my thumb starts screaming. What I would like to know is, does this song have any notes lower than that B? Could I get away with raising the sixth string 1½ steps and just playing it open (with the capo, of course)? And if you're some hot-shit guitar snob who's inclined to wax all condescending over my obvious ignorance, here is my ass. ( | ) The line starts back there. [points in the distance] You my want some Chapstick.

Guitcad1 just keep playing it like that and you won't even go back to playing it the other way. Or just don't play it at all

+Guitcad1 For the most part you could play that string open if you tune it as you describe, however towards the end of the song John places his thumb two tones down to the fifth fret.

+Guitcad1 Use your third finger. The only thing is that you will need it to hit the other notes, instead of having it ring throughout the way it would with your thumb.

+Guitcad1 That'd work for this song, since he doesn't do too much else on the 6th string - you could make it work. However, fretting the 6th string while playing the open C formation has a lot of benefit, and it's incredibly common in ragtime, bluegrass, country, blues, etc. Reason being, is that it's the 5th, and nothing complements the tonic more, especially for travis picking. Then you can get into clever ascending bass stuff like C/G -> D/F# - F, where your thumb just rides the down.

I'm not sure I like this fast version. Like the song is way too impatient!

Seriously inspired! I've appreciated his electric blue stuff from afar, never cared for the early pop stuff where he made his name. But this stripped down folk/blues is spot on, great playing, delivery, lyrics. Been playing along to this one and Olivia past couple days, will be exploring the rhythmic complexities and guitar nuances for quite awhile. Love this approach!

Really cool when you watch these live recorded performances after the official studio recordings. Things are done a little differently. You get the feeling of the music in more than one way. Btw I love where he keeps his pick lol.

These acoustic versions of his albums are simply amazing. Raw emotion and talent bleeds out of this guy. He needs to stick to music like this, it is beautiful!! but then again I shouldn't be advising John on what music to make haha, I just prefer it! Thanks for the influence Mayer
