That's the thing. Fed didn't need to be at his best to be the most stylish player the modern game has seen. He was always that, except on those days that he was _really_ off (which mostly happened as he turned 36-37). But at his best? He was tennis descended from above and made flesh on a court.

Agreed. Federer is a true artist, and one proof of this is that his technique is almost impossible to fully reproduce. That's because it's integrated to the point where it's not just a part of him - it is him. In a way, there is no technique any more - not in any separate sense. It's simply how his body expresses itself. That's what makes it so natural and so inviting to copy and yet so impossible to replicate. The challenge Federer lays down to us, like all artists do, is how to find that level of integration in ourselves, whatever our art form is, and to find our own naturalness.

At his peak his level was the highest in my opinion, he would take a set off Nadal at French open quite easily at that level for example. Just sustaining it was the problem.

I have been watching great tennis players like borg, macnroe, stefan, becker,sampras, nadal, dokovic. But my player is simply Roger. He is simply unparraral.

They were both amazing players and I still think Borg could have won more but his heart with travelling wasn't in it anymore,retired at 27

That was a ripper match. I watched a youtube clip where Bjorn explains how he went to the net during the match and just chatted with John to settle down, don't be so intense, don't be so angry enjoy the match. He really thought McEnroe's antics were funny. He took the piss as they say.

No-one ever talks about Roy Emerson. Probably the best (at his peak) and the most class. Miles better then Borg.

I still remember the way the British media used to crucify him and label him "Superbrat". Then one year he got pissed off and decided not to play Wimbledon. The result was the most boring tournament in years.

I know isn't that sweet how still kinda SHY is Borg. (Look at Bjorn at 26 no one hotter than him but better players.) I love Bjorn but watch some highlights of some of Rogers AMAZING rallies/ returns...like wow!!. He helped make the sport more electric as it seems each generation makes it better. Novak will be fighting at 50!! I believe it. They made each other better. Its a great time (HOWEVER SAD )for tennis! I do think the cool factor did START in the early 70s with TV coverage etc so I do tip my hat to the guys now grey..ox

@gpman6937 I feel that, too. One of Borg's most ndearing qualities was his calm and modest demeaner. He wasn't trying to be mobbed by girls or fans; HIS cool was 100% real, effortless, and eternal no matter how numan he is. He's a special one. There never been a player with his combination of traits before or since.

Same here.. I did watch the match, but only 1 set at a time after skipping so many times.

I think there will be many more chances to see him live. I think part of the reason he's retiring is so he remain at a super high level for the next decade, still good enough to challenge a top 10 player for a short stretch. He could try to come back for a shortened season but the strain of a tough match could completely ruin his knee and he wouldn't be able to play in retirement.

A few words from Borg count for a lot, when he says " to be your friend" with such a tender expression beats a whole pile hyperbole from Mac. Borg never had to say much, in his pomp he was one of those extraordinary people that you could not take your eyes off. There's a famous photo of him surrounded by hundreds of people outside centre court staring at him in awe. That's a very very rare quality. Elvis had it, Ali had it, Steve MacQueen, but that kind of magnetism is given to a very few. Your body language is doing all the talking for you.

@@rouajohn I do consider Federer perhaps the most talented, but in. Reality it’s truly impossible to compare completely different times and qualities. Borg basically invented the high topspin all-court game and Mac’s serve & volley looks so effortless but if you try to emulate what he does (and people have tried), you realize it’s all talent. As a Novak fan who was a Roger fan before that, I can conjure up memories of all 4 players that are simply magnificent. Maybe you should explain your definition of "GOAT," because you cannot leave out the numbers... 14 French Opens for Rafa, 9 Australian & 7 Wimbledons for Novak. Novak is undefeated on Centre Court Wimbledon for the last NINE years,, and undefeated against Roger in Wimbledon finals. They are ALL magnificent, so please - either go away and remain biased, or celebrate all of them. We will miss all 3 of them desperately when they are gone.

But yeah tennis is about endurance, not who hits more winners, most of the time... and that's become even more true on today's slow courts. @@prafulyadav661 Yes, it is. But we can he honest here, and I've said it numerous times already: fans of the other Big 3 have always had their guy down as the best, regardless of records. We have 10 years of online arguments as evidence. Further, what does it mean to be the GOAT of a sport? If you're invested in that concept, I cannot think of any GOAT that is a pure churner of the best statistics. There are always intangibles, and those are what captures people's hearts and minds, because that is the only way you can be the GOAT of anything -- the emotions evoked are the most important factor. The GOAT is not an actual, measurable thing, because evolution and changing conditions means you cannot compare eras. So, for Federer, the intangibles are the way he has gone about winning as much as he has; the spectacle he has put on in achieving all that he has achieved. This has got to be the part of reason he was being anointed so early on, long before he even had double digit slams (I don't have a problem with anyone arguing that there were also murky agendas behind his marketing at the time). Nadal has his intangibles too, and if he ends up the slam leader, you might see a shift. Djokovic is the one who will lose out here, so he is the one who is most dependent on statistics (he knows this, of course). He already has most, so, if he ends up with the slam record, he will have to hope that his resume is enough for people to embrace him. If that doesn't happen, he will have to be content in the knowledge that he was better than his rivals, with the record books showing this.
