In total control of his instrument on the top of his talent. Just jaw-dropping brilliant. While listening I'm reminded of John Coltrane who possessed the same amazing kind of talent and control.

I could not agree more. I've seen him in all kinds of venues. From a small room of about 200 people with Jonas Hellborg on bass andTrilok Gurtu on percussion, to the full-blown Mahavishnu Orchestra in a packed auditorium. My 1st time was in '75 with Jeff Beck. They encored together and I was in guitar heaven. Trading solos at amazing speed, and Beck finally conceded and said "ladies and gents, the master of the guitar Mr John McLaughlin. Amazing show!!

It takes a pretty decent guitar player to drop that many notes, that fast, anytime he wants. But it takes a true master like John to have that talent, and use it only where it's called for and where it makes musical sense.

McLaughlin came over from England to work with Tony Williams. Tony brought McLaughlin over to Miles Davis's place that night. Davis hired McLaughlin on the spot. Davis wrote a song dedicated McLaughlin.

... Good for you brother. I was that close this same year (1981 or '82) at Santa Monica Civic Center. Ravi Shankar was with him & John had the craziest guitar, short cross strings in the center at a 45° angle. Saw & heard him at London Rainbow, '80. With Billy Cobham & Jack Bruce. Played the shit outta a banjo!....

After seeing John a few times, I invited some friends to come with me. It was probably 1978 in My Father's Place. I told them that the only thing you hear in the audience and what they would be saying is" Holy Shit". They said bullshit and didn't believe me. Then John started to warm up and all they said was "Holy Shit". It's always funny to hear the reaction of a rookie audience. Props to John always. His improvisational stamina has only ever been equaled by Paco DeLucia. I will enjoy his work forever.
@lesnyk2558 жыл бұрын
+Mike383HK I saw him play with Joey DeFrancesco & Dennis Chambers back around 1995. It was mostly a college crowd (I was 45 at the time). When the monitor on Joey's Hammond blew, they had to punt - so JM & Chambers launched into a 30 minute jam on their own, "Jazz Jungle", I think. There was a kid a few rows ahead of me across the aisle who'd toked generously before the show. He was beside himself with disbelief, overwhelmed by the intensity of music pouring out of this man old enough to be his father.

+lesnyk255 Yes indeed!! Professionals!! They lost an amp while I was watching John with Shakti in MFP and he continued signaling and jamming through the whole thing. No problem!! They never stop!!! Wild, isn't it!!!

Mahavishnu a good band. Mahavishnu would blow ANYTHING band that Fripp was in. PERIOD. It was a known fact that people didn't want to follow Mahavishnu on stage after they played. I saw Jeff Beck let McLaughlin sit in when they would tour together and Jeff Beck threw up his hands, pointed to John and then Jeff Beck just stood there watching, just like everyone else in the audience. Jeff Beck and John are long time friends.

I bought Devotion and it instantly blew me away, bought Inner Mounting flame, likewise, then Birds of Fire, blown even further away. I thrashed that album to death & never tired of it. The only album which has ever come close is Nomad by Jesse Cook. I know what you mean re something big changing.

The jumps within the scale when picking notes that is John's style has always impressed me to no end. while attempting to make breakthroughs myself this continues to trip me up and John does it with such ease, and to think Paco De Lucia, and Al De Meola are about to take the stage with him & this was all before the era when when shred was to become an underground sensation., Though it is good to see it still lives in the hearts of players like John, Roy Marchbank etc.. :D

That's right, Mr. Trucks is still developing himself. From what I've heard from him, he's one of the best slide guitarists on the planet. As far as considering an extremely versatile and accomplished guitar player, he doesn't even measure up to a real guitar prodigy like John McLaughlin. I'm not putting Mr. Trucks down, he's still young and very talented, but if anyone is an accomplished guitarist who has been performing and writing music for over 50 years of his life, it's John McLaughlin!

There are guitarists I like more than JM, but very very few for whom I have the respect for as I do JM. This is actually the first time I've seen hi sit alone with an acoustic and play; seen him (videos) many times with other players playing acoustic and electric. I admire the speed, but I can't say it really grabs me as some others who play with less speed but whom I find quite enjoyable.

I've never seen him live, but I've never really liked his performances on any You Tube videos, obviously the sound is far from best! I'm a lifelong fan, since "The Inner Mounting Flame" then, working backwards, to the amazing "Extrapolation" and "Where Fortune Smiles" and a little gem with Duffy Power, one track, "Little Boy Blue". His range and innovation unsurpassed on those alone! His playing with Miles Davis on "Jack Johnston" "Bitches Brew" "In a Silent Way" "On The Corner", and of course, Mahavishnu Orchestra. And, this same man created "Natural Elements"!! Those who know, know I'm only half way there. No other guitarist has ever created so much diversity and innovative sounds from their instrument. These last five plus years, I haven't found anything which excites me, the sound is very hard and flat, but for so many previous years of great music, I can't complain.

magic is in the right wrist. Paco DeLucia prob isn't as fast as John. DiMeola isn't , either. But it's the fact he's playing legit lines and not just some grouping of 6 note patterns on one string like DiMeola does. Hard to believe he's picking each note tho.

@theendlessenigma Yeah, I've always loved John's music since I discovered him in 1970 during my drug crazed teens. I've often looked back and thought how (to me) he was the voice of sanity within all the crazy and oft times pretentious areas of music I listened to back then-very drug oriented- he Kept me grounded. Always GOT his music. I believe too many people know neither how to hear or listen. It's their GREAT loss.

The body is their composite fiberglass or whatever they use. John already had a bad experience when his doubleneck was outside at a gig and the wind got ahold of it in a freak accident and the guitar split in half. The other thing is he was interviewed around the same timeframe and he mentioned that you can bounce the back of the guitar and it just bounces back, which makes it durable and LESS affected by weather conditions. If it gets messed up, they are inexpensive to replace.

Siggy S. jazz is all about improvisation and watching the man improvise this fast is exhilarating! In jazz playing at such speeds is the norm. I find it strange that the "playing fast = no feel" prejudice is peculiar to the guitar. Sax players play at lightning speed. Keyboardists too. To be honest, everyone plays fast. But when a guitarist with actual technical prowess decides to play that way, the double standards appear.
@kennopalus9 жыл бұрын
That's because most people associate the guitar with the blues . That style of guitar tells a story through the guitar solos .
@johnmills8689 жыл бұрын
Ken opalus no, it is because of rock guitarists using the most boring blues scale and shredding to it - the mainstream hears that rubbish.
@kennopalus9 жыл бұрын
I am not referring to shred . I am talking about how the guitar was introduced to modern music . Clapton , Hendrix and guys in that vain . The guitar ruled for a decade or so after they came on the scene . Shred is a lot more involved than you think , but, it is still boring as hell to listen to .
@5oulPower9 жыл бұрын
Hell most people I know here don't even know Clapton and Hendrix. They associate the guitar with chords. Hah!
@kennopalus9 жыл бұрын
Correct , but , most people don't think of the guitar as technical as the select group you refer to . I guarantee you , Eddie Van Halen introduced more people to a level of technical ability than any jazz guitar player . That doesn't mean there aren't plenty of guys that can play circles around Eddie , its how it was introduced to the public
