One of his best post-Mahavishnu line-ups. Mbappe is extraordinary. they all are!

John McLaughlin, for my money still the Best post Hendrix Guitarist. My nod to my other favourites like Rypdal, Towner, Segovia, Muddy Waters, Charlie Christian, Gismonti, Paco De Lucia, Django, among others, but McLaughlin never ceases to amaze. My compliments and appreciation to them all.

I agree. It's not just his outside the box, stretching the boundaries of playing "jazz": chords, modes and modalities: Fusion, World, Indian. His sheer inventiveness on both electric and acoustic guitar. The amazing line-ups he puts together since the days of Tony Williams Lifetime., w/ Miles Davis thru Mahavishnu, Shakti, Acoustic guitar trio with Paco, Al & Larry, Electric acoustic trio with Trilok Gurtu, bassists Kai Eckhardt, Dominic di Piazza, The organ trio with Joey D. and Elvin Jones, Heart of Things band, 4th Dimension and more. And not to forget his amazing compositions. So many over so many years that remain freshly startling, inventive and unique. He is one of the most amazing master musicians of our time. Wishing JMcL "more power" for many years to come.

I agree Doug. The sheer brilliance, variety, and volume of John McLaughlin's body of work from 1969 to the present makes him (in my opinion) the best of the post Django guitarists, whether you consider his acoustic or electric work. I feel very happy and privileged to have caught him live in New York over the past fourthy five years or so in a variety of settings. Whether solo or in various other settings he has never ceased to amaze, and is still innovative and at the top of his craft.

A prophet without honour in his own country. I recently visited Kirk Sandall, near Doncaster, where John was born. Never mind that he only lived there the first 6 months of his life, the town has absolutely nothing to commemerate the fact that he comes from there. And, similarly, the BBC produced a magazine a few years ago of the 100 greatest jazz musicians, in their opinion. John wasn't even mentioned. A bloody disgrace.

What I absolutely love is the way he seeks out musicians who are even better on their instruments than he is - no ego.

Why does the bassist wear gloves?

In interviews, Etienne says it's because his sweat it so corrosive that strings don't last very long. He likes new, crisp-sounding strings, to to cut down on sweat contact, he wears silk glove liners.

I've heard it's because of Etienne's acidic sweat to keep the strings from rusting.
