I was adopted from foster care. I didn’t have the perfect life, but I had everything I needed - including a dad who loved and protected me unconditionally. Dad passed away last summer. I am so grateful for the 47 years I got to be his daughter. ❤️

We became foster parents so we could take in a friend of my son’s who was being abused. A few months later we got a call a one year old little girl with circumstances very similar to this song. Our kids were 12 and 16 so we were starting over but as soon as they handed her to me she was mine. Ours. We were able to adopt her and now at 7 years old she is light of our lives! Our family thinks of this song as “her” song. Thank you for speaking in support of foster parenting.

In 1978, My sisters and I were taken away from our mother and we were put in separate foster homes. My sister Lilly and I were placed at Sunnybrook, a Christian children's home, located in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Even years later, Sunnybrook is still going strong. I stayed there nine years. Lilly stayed 14 years. We still call Sunnybrook home. And I can still feel the love that emanated from there even though I am over 100 miles away. I am in the process of writing a book about my time at Sunnybrook so everybody can read and know what a wonderful place Sunnybrook is. The title of my book is called "Sunnybrook Memories: Where Love Abounds."

Fun fact: this song was written about a little girl that went through this and was on the news because she said Jesus sat with her behind the couch and protected her while her father killed her mother and then killed himself. I remember when this happened, I was a teenager maybe or almost a teenager.

Fun fact, no its not. He wrote it after getting forwarded this church spam email that's literally this exact story: The song, titled "The Little Girl," was penned by Allen after his brother forwarded him the above-quoted text via e-mail. "It moved me more than I'd been moved in years by a story," Allen said. "I grabbed the guitar and just started writing. It didn't take any time at all, about 10 to 15 minutes." This email was spammed to hundreds of thousands of ppl and over Facebook. This is the email: "There was an atheist couple who had a daughter. The couple never told their daughter anything about the Lord. One night, when the little girl was five years old, the parents fought with each other and the dad shot the mom, right in front of the child. Then, the dad shot himself. The little girl watched it all. She was sent to a foster home. The foster mother was a Christian and took the child to church. On the first day of Sunday School, the foster mother told the teacher that the girl had never heard of Jesus, and to have patience with her. The teacher held up a picture of Jesus and said, "Does anyone know who this is?" Advertisement: The little girl said, "I do. That's the man who was holding me the night my parents died."

John Michael Montgomery is the brother of the lead singer Eddie Montgomery of 'Montgomery & Gentry'. Sadly Troy Gentry was killed in a helicopter accident no the way to a concert in 2017, I think it was. John has some great hits, including the fun one 'Sold at the Grundy County Auction' but I haven't heard anything from him in years. This tune is a tear jerker.

My mom tried to foster a teenage girl around my age back when I was in high school. We were given strict rules to follow with her for safety reasons but it ended up not working out due to her behavior and us not getting along. She's doing a lot better now but it was still an eye opening glimpse into one of many outcomes being in the foster system can have.

I was in an abusive home with my biological father. He was a mean drunk. My sister's and I were abused in every way. My first memory is of him cutting my leg open with a dirty knife, I was 2 and a half years. We were put into a children's home, at least me and my two older siblings. Our youngest sister was only 2 months old at the time. She went to foster homes. Well one of those homes was a preacher's family. They loved her and wanted to adopt her and the rest of us, but my biological parents wouldn't give us up. To make a very long story short. At age 11 after the state took us away from our biological father again and sent him to prison for child abuse, we were put up for adoption. I'm 11 and devastated because I was all ready to go to mama's house for Thanksgiving break and instead I get a letter telling me that my younger sister and I would not be seeing our mother again because she was putting us up for adoption. I know we weren't going to be seeing our mom again because with the letter was also our Christmas presents from her. I went to church that Sunday morning with my house parent and cried on the shoulders of my children's choir director. I told her everything her name was Connie Swicegood. Connie went home from church that afternoon and called her good friend Nee to pray for the V' girls. Two sisters that needed a Christian home and parents. Nee was my younger sister's foster mom from years before. They are now our parents. God has blessed my sisters and I with loving parents! But I have no doubt that if the have killed one or all of us.

I went through something similar, minus the death of my parents. My mom traded me to men for drugs until I was 5, if you know what I mean. The last straw was when she left me with a child predator and disappeared for 2 weeks. A black lady that lives next door noticed what had happened and basically took me. Called the cops and kept me until my mom showed up. She tried to adopt me but the state wouldn't allow it as she two sons. The state thought that going to school would cause problems because of our difference in race. I was placed in foster care then adopted by my grandparents

John Michael did not write this song, and it's not based on a true story. The write Harley Allen was inspired to bring light to children being saved from bad situations. Country Music tends to be good at bringing attention to hard subjects. Martina McBride based her whole incredible career on bringing light to difficult subjects like child abuse, domestic violence, child illness, etc. and she is an incredible singer. She never shied away from a tough subject.

I’m having a very hard time believing this y’all’s first time hearing this. I’m 37 and y’all look older then me and I’ve known this song since it came out YEARS ago. I’m a rock and metal head aswell yet even I heard this before… sorry, just not believing it
