John Oates (of Hall & Oates) is known worldwide for his hit-making prowess, but with his new solo album 'Arkansas', Oates trades the pristine pop of his past for the rustic roots of American music and he revisits some of his fingerpicking favorites by legends like Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Blake.

It's hard for me to dislike a guy that not only likes but can play stuff by my two favorite guitarists of all time

As time has gone one, the more i've appreciated this fella in everything he does. The pop smooth stuff turned me off as a kid but now i look at them as well worked pop gems and really appreciate just what a fantastic musician he is outside of Hall and Oates.

CMQ When they first had a radio hit, He was doing Philly Soul, that folks thought was an African American R&B group. A lot was Hall's singing, but the music is soulful as hell. Questlove always praises them for influencing him and the Roots.

I was introduced to the blues during the summer of 1965 (I was 14). The Chicago PBS station aired a 60 minute special, the first 30 mintues with Mississippi John Hurt sitting alone on stage, playing a resonator, followed by 30 minutes of a 17-year-old Buddy Guy. I was hooked on both! Thank you, John Oates, for the wonderful memories.

John sounds and looks really good here. I was mesmerized watching his playing. On the last part of the 2nd song, his finger movement on the neck of his guitar was like he was playing a piano. Beautiful! 💙
