I'm sure it went over the heads of some people, but I'm sure many people understood it. It's just that the India comment was tacked on almost as an afterthought at the end of his previous remark about the British as colonizers, which the audience did understand and laugh at. Your condescending attitude was a bit unnecessary.

My Mum and Dad emigrated from Carshalton, Surrey and Feltham, South London to San Francisco in 1964. Dad passed customs with $200.00 in his pocket and six months to find work. Mum entered six months later with a five year old kid and $20.00. They sold everything to get to the USA. Neither had been more than 150 miles from London. They had one shot at getting it together and no plan of retreat if they didn't. Dad went on to gain a high level civilian military clearance and became senior design engineer at Lockheed Missiles and Space. He worked at the Blue Cube on Moffett Naval Air Station Mtn. View, Ca. on government things he wasn't allowed to speak of to others. Dad passed away having never divulged what it was he did to help America. Mum (a very accomplished concert pianist in England who once played the Royal Albert Hall) would eventually own several beauty salons. Many years later I took an apprenticeship under her tutelage and became a hairdresser myself. They were naturalised in the Bicentennial year of 1976. Although both have now long since gone I still have their Certificates of Naturalisation hanging on a wall in my home. I have never for one moment forgotten the sacrifices they made so that we kids would have a better life than that which we would have had in England. That is the greatest love I could have possibly have asked for. It was an incredible achievement for two kids who came from zero, endured WWII, the Battle of Britain, three times bombed out of their family homes and the Blitz of London. They came from nothing and honestly had precious little chance of much but they made it all the way! My twin sister and I are the first natural born Americans in our family. Mum and Dad dearly loved America and in all things American they delighted. To myself they were the bravest people I have ever known. They must have been terrified. So, I extend a heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Oliver. Welcome to the USA. You as well good sir have made it all the way and I'll wager that feels so good you're a bit dizzy with it. 🇬🇧🇺🇸❤️

I have a dual citizenship myself, not American mind you, but I remember not really caring a lot before the ceremony but while I was waiting outside of the hall in the city hall building with all the other people it got very weird all of a suddenly, realising that everyone around you was also there for the same reason and once we came out of the hall we'd all be of that nationality. And swearing the oath all together and each and everyone having to go up to the podium to declare themselves was making everyone just grin in this weird uncontrollable way. While we were hanging out his dad asked me to help him study for his citizenship test. He's usually a very calm and collected fellow. Studying for that test is the most nervous I've ever seen him. And not one of these watered down modern kings, like George III of England, who had to step aside from the throne every time his mental health issues made him even one half as intractable and delusional as the present putative President on one of his occasional good days. And, for that matter, Geo III was explicitly subservient to the law of the land -- which had been a radical innovation, when England instituted it in 1688, and subsequently adopted in all fashionable monarchies. Strange that the US would voluntarily run in the opposite direction. Not clear what long term good the Declaration of Independence has done, but it's pretty clear what the writers would think of the US today.

You'll still be able to live and work in other European countries, you'll just need to apply to do so. Nothing to do with passports.

I'm trying to remember the questions I had during my citizenship test. I'm pretty sure one of them was "Name a state that borders Mexico?" The guy giving me the test was kind of a jerk though. I brought my existing passport along, and he asked me if I had visited any places in the past so I mentioned long off trips out of the country, and he asks why they are not stamped in there and I'm like that's a new passport, maybe last year or so. He gives me a look as if I was supposed to bring all my passports with me to create a timeline or something. I just needed to bring my current passport, not past passports.

That’s the thing some people think it’s so easy to become a citizen and it’s not. It takes a long time and it’s super expensive. It took my grandfather 24 years to become a citizen and about 20k +

Having taken the citizenship test, it was basically remembering everything I learned in History class which of course means that the "Build The Wall!" Fanatics wouldn't be able to pass it cause they were too busy being the class clown or just writing down everything as "The South will rise again!".
