I love his version of the phantom. he has the right amount of seduction, mystery, and raw emotion. he embodies the essence of the phantom very well I think.

He has a sexy powerful voice I like his interpretation of the phantom because he does exactly what a man who kidnaps a woman's heart would do use softness in the beginning then make the woman tremble at his dominance ! That is what the phantom of the Opera does he knows what he wants but yet shows his soft side to his Christine and that is very manly and mysterious John Owen Jones is the Phantom of the Opera.

couldn't agree more. I feel a lot of other Phantoms miss one of those things or use too much of it in one way or another or some overcompensate by portraying him as all madness and not enough gentleness.. forgetting that he's in fact in love with Christine, not just a maniac and his captures that essence for me. Honestly I'd understand if in the end, JOJ being Phantom, if Christine just said, "nope, sorry Raul, I'm running off with Phantom, we're inlove.."

@@lizythewizzmeow2621 You understand exactly how I feel.. I feel too many overplay the dominance and aggression factor losing the fact that he's trying to seduce and make Christine fall in love with him.. just as he's in love with her.. JOJ is my Phantom of the Opera too!!!

I'm torn between him and Ramin. :) I like Ramin's harsher voice because it fits the Phantom well, but John has this incredible vocal control that at times I feel Ramin lacks. And let's not even begin to talk about John's falsetto....it is SO amazing, as proved in his recording of Bring Him Home. :) Then again, Ramin has an amazing falsetto as well, and he is playing that same role in Les Mis, lol!
@MrBandity
@MrBandity 9 жыл бұрын
I feel the exact same way! Also Ramin's vibrato can be a little rough whereas JOJ's is very controlled(as you said) and smooth. JOJ Has that richer, more aged voice compared to Ramin's much younger and a little /too/ clear voice. They both have an amazing clear, unwavering head voice though. I have such a hard time choosing between JOJ and Ramin's JVJ, but I'm probably gonna have to go with Ramin's because his belting is utter perfection.

I like how he smiles on only one side of his face- exactly the way he would if he was wearing the mask, which obscures the other half. In performance, smiling on both sides would have been difficult because the makeup constricts movement of the lips on that side, but it also would have been pointless because the mask would be covering it.

Lydia Buckout I've been singing this twice a week at karaoke since hearing it twice- once in 1992 and again in 2014. It gets a great response every time. :) Even won a singing contest once. It helps a lot to be able to relate the character to your own life, the loneliness in it. It's just karaoke, but even there, people are either going to like it or hate it. There is still an audience. Putting your own true emotion in there really makes a huge positive difference. I've seen people weep, clutch their hearts, gasp, cheer, applaud...Sometimes in the middle of the song...And it always seems like they're doing that for someone else in another part of the bar because never been popular or well-liked. Would be doing this for a living if I had a better memory. My dad could really croon but never did anything with it. I want to do something with it.

倪传历 i hope that An American Victory is a great musical, he deserves the opportunity to create/debut a role for the world. I want his patience these last two years to pay off. Really John sounds more compelling than ever, Broadway would be fools not to use him. Since he's done the very best that Webber as well as Boubil and Schonberg have to offer, I think it would be nice if he added more Sondheim roles to roster. I would love to see him in a revival of Sunday in the Park with George.

think that it depends on the generation fans were born in that determines which Phantom and Christine are their favourites, for example fans who were born in 1940s - 1970s will always love sarah brightman and Michael Crawford the most as the roles and fans born in 1980s-1990s will favour john owen jones as the phantom or if the fans only really watch films they will possibly favour Gerrard butler as the phantom, fans born in 2000s and 90s will mostly favour Sierra Bogess and Ramin Karimloo as the roles as their is a big chance the first time they have seen phantom was on the 25th anniversary dvd there is also other reasons of course such as the fans prefer a certain voice, take on the role or they are attracted to a certain actor/actress more also in reply to why phantoms now a-days don't sing with the type of voice that Michael Crawford used and instead sing with power and more anger i would say because most people now adays will more likely critic the singer if they don't sing "vocally correct" and most people now prefer a voice that sounds comfortable in a way and expect a phantom to sing with power instead of a ghostly and creepy accented voice, if you have read this full message, thank you very much!

What makes his the best is that he doesn’t take a big breath before the word “to be” like almost every other phantom. He breathes way before everyone else and sustains the “to be” longer than everyone else! The others take a Big Gulp of air and makes it sooo more obvious of a big note coming…. John just does it effortlessly

For me this performance is the closest someone's ever come to Michael Crawford's level of intensity and perfection. My first impression of this song was that it was relatively easy to sing. You'd think you're past the worst of it when you manage the falsetto at 'spirit start to soar' and avoid sounding ridiculous at 'where you long to beeeee....' you still have to hold the long note at the end. Even John seemed to put in some vibrato at the end which would have made it easier. Crawford holds the note steady effortlessly throughout. with all due respect to JOJ of course.
@clickonmikey01
@clickonmikey01 Жыл бұрын
What u say is true …. However … if u compare the last phrasing of “help me make the music of the night…..” U will see that michael Crawford takes a breath prior to the last word “night”…. John however continues the phrasing and does not rely on a breath before the word “night” …. Which is a MUCH HARDER FEAT thy singing the last part without vibrato. John sustains it longer than Crawford. Both are nice … but No one breathes better in their phrasing than john….he doesn’t gasp for air right before the long nite of Night like JUST ABOUT EVERY OTHER PHANTOM. This is what makes him head and shoulders above the rest - on par with michael Crawford but far superior to screaming Ramin who takes too many breaths in his phrasing!

I have to say that John and Anthony Warlow are probably THE BEST portrayals of the Phantom that i have seen. In the past 5 musicals i've attended since seeing Michael Crawford for my very first experience. Each man will bring something different in playing this character. I have to say that Anthony Warlow is my favorite. There is something infectious about his baritone voice that breaths that extra little bit of life into the character. And being a singer myself it's not just how it's sung it's how it's how the character is acted. And in my honest opinion Anthony has both going for him voice and acting ability. The role was meant for a tenor to play as i'm a tenor myself. However, they've broken from tradition with folks like Warlow and Norm Lewis playing the character. And after seeing the show 5 times now most of the time with tenors in the role. The other that comes to mind being Peter Joback whose voice reminded me A LOT of Michael Crawfords. I think that this role was more suited for a baritone then a tenor because they can bring a more commanding authority to the various songs the Phantom sings. To each his own i suppose but i've been in music and have sung all my life. And being a tenor 1 with a higher contralto range. I feel confident in expressing my opinion on which type of voice should be playing this character.

I agree. Equally, an actor in a long running show will over time introduce their own 'variations' in order to avoid going stale and to keep the piece fresh. I know in interviews, JOJ has said how much he enjoyed the UK tour of POTO (and also the 25th Les Miz tour), as it gave him a chance to re-create the roles with the director, something you don't usually have the chance to do if you haven't been in the original cast.

Rickard Nyberg I absolutely adore Ramin as Phantom, but I have to agree. In Ramin's version of "Music of the Night," I think his anger dampened the "spell" of the song. If he reined in some of that anger like JOJ here, then Ramin would probably be my fave Phantom w/o a doubt, lol.

Jones feels like a good middle ground to Crawford's delicate, absurdly polished melodic approach and Ramin's more rough, deeper approach. Beautiful.

Hmmm. His voice brings something unique and wonderful to the Phantom! I wonder what direction his voice has gone. He definitely has some of the spinto tenor sound. I have heard it said that a spinto soprano has the warmth and richness of a mezzo, and the easy high notes of a soprano. JOJ has some of the characteristics of a baritone in the lower part of his voice, and his high notes are pretty effortless! He does a wonderful job in the role!

Was in London a few years ago to see him as phantom. It happened to be his day off and I can't get over it :( The dates with him not performing were changed right before we went there.

JOJ's Music of the Night is my favourite version. I love his "Phantom of the Opera" track, but I think I'l place Ramin's version of the "Sing... Sing my angel of music" before JOJ's; but as far as Music of the Night goes, JOJ is just the best, and no one has done "spirit start to soar" better. *P.S.* - JOJ did a Music of the Night video recording in his living room during the first phase of Quarantine - with a few Christmas lights behind him, very informal - I just love it. For anyone interested, it is available on youtube, do check it out

best phantom in my opinion. obviously he has the voice of a majestic welsh angel, but his acting is absolutely superb. i managed to catch seeing him in London a few years ago and it sent shivers down my spine. he can be so gentle (like here) but when he does "damn you" it's honestly terrifying. so glad i grew up with access to performances like this from home! videos like this are getting me through quarantine. stay safe. xoxo
