What a beautiful man John Peel was - you can hear the heartbreak in his voice.

Robert Wyatt was a really special and nice guy, alway loved to listen to him, he had such a soothing voice, a tragedy that that accident stopped his drumming, a superb singer, still love Shipbuilding, such a beautiful song , sung by Robert.

Your post is very sincere and heart felt bit it comes off as an obituary! Robert's still around and doing far better than most would have thought he'd be doing in his late 70s (especially considering what he's had to deal with over the last nearly-50 years). I think his devoted wife Alfreda is largely responsible for that.

I heard this very announcement (I was in Oxford) and sent off a letter the very next day I think.

A lot of the Canterbury scene have passed on. I'm glad Robert is still his jovial self ! I had the pleasure of working for most of GONG during the 90s , What a beautiful group of people Daevid and Gilli were both amazing story tellers ! RIP Guys , You are sorely missed dear friends

I have never heard of RW talking of his accident or subsequent disability with sorrow or regret, let alone self-pity. He insisted that other people seemed more upset about it than he was, and was joky and philosophical about it from the outset. (See Different Every Time, pp.186-191)

heartbreaking ... never came across this broadcast before, although I was and am a huge follower (of both) .. his (Robert's) drum skills are close to none (I could only put Keith, Mitch & Bill on the british side partly on the same level), and I'm thankful for everything he could do after this twist of karma/life

Manfred Kayser Everybody mentions Keith Moon honestly he is such a limited drummer. Paice, Bruford, Moerlen, Baker, Wyatt now they're drummers!

He's said himself that he'd have probably ended up dead otherwise.

I do think so also...He never complained about it and Alfie was always there for him...Just look (and listen to) at the amazing work he did...up to this day!!! Yes, I think in this case it was a blessing in disguise!

My father was a friend of his and told me the true story was he jumped out of the window trying not to get caught in bed with someone he shouldn't have been with, but still very sad thing to happen
