After hanging up his guitar, John Squire of the Stone Roses, went on to reinvent himself as an artist.
In anticipation of the 'Watercolour' exhibition at Tate Britain, we invited him behind the scenes to talk about a favourite watercolour from Tate's Collection by Patrick Heron, and to show us how he uses watercolour in his own work.
Music by 'Ashbourne's Strongest Man'.

The level of ignorance in some of the comments I read is extraordinary. I wanted him to play again as much as the next Roses fan and I'm over the moon that I got to see him & pals live this summer. Amazing guitarist, amazing band. But he's a talented artist too, a deep, intelligent, gentle man and a gentleman whom I have had the fortune to talk to. I hope he will find a way to do both music and art. He's truly inspirational.

@johnmcluskey John Squire has said many times he's sick of the music industry. The only thing he misses is playing live to an audience.

so many talk bad about Art and artists, yet i wonder how many of them in studios working daily? i make a nice living creating art and feel blessed to be able to do something i enjoy and love. although i never attended an art school; i'm well read, i view art of ALL types in galleries and museums and i work. yet, i don't sit and slag others (except Pollock and Warhol) and their work. it just seems to smack of pettiness and jealousy.

I don't know why Squire still cant play guitar? Graham Coxon produces abstract art all the time and has his own gallery exhibitions and studio, but he still plays very well. Maybe John Squire is just content with what he does now in the art world..

@Monkeymarksmagicmail Although mrcrimpcrimp might have taken it a little harshly, they have a good reason to be mad at modmutha, who insensitively insulted John Squire. Not saying either of those comments are adequate, but at least one of them has a reasonable excuse. modmutha is just rude.

The real artistry lies in being able to speak like that, and have people take you seriously. Would it kill you to clearly articulate your points, or must you drape them in relentless art-speak?

Thanks for being respectful:) I hate how some people can be so angry and prejudice without realising art is just entirely subjective. It’s stupid to get angry at what others like in terms of art.
