John Vervaeke shares his thoughts on how agapic love matters to living a meaningful life. Please subscribe by clicking the button above for more mind-opening videos.
The original title for this talk is, "Eros into Agape, and the Core of Buddhist training".
Abstract:
In his essay The Basis of Buddhist Philosophy D. T. Suzuki states "Buddhist training consists in transforming tisna (tanha) into karuna, ego-centered love into something universal, eros into agape." In a similar vein Ajahan Sucitto in Turning the Wheel of Truth: Commentary on the Buddha's First Teaching, argues that "you could summarize Dhamma training as the transformation of taṇhā into chanda," and that we are not trying to get rid of desire but "trying to transmute it, take it out of the shadow of gratification and need, and use its aspiration and vigor to bring us into light and clarity." The concept of transformation of eros into agape draws from the neoplatonic Christian tradition of anagoge (the spiritual ascent to enlightenment) that Suzuki is discussing in his essay, and Sucitto moves towards a similar theme when he speaks of the transmutation of craving into an aspiration that moves into the light. So Suzuki's Zen tradition, the neoplatonic Christian tradition, and Sucitto's Theravadan tradition seem to be converging on a claim that is regarded as central to the traditions. How can we understand this process of transformation and transmutation? This talk will argue that the cognitive science of relevance realization and wisdom cultivation can be integrated with philosophical and psychological work on meaning in life in order to clarify this process of transmuting eros into agape.

John: I watched your show on Agape: Thank you. I have a supporting comment. Cognitive Science/Buddhism is an important interpretation of the Philia of Agape. In your program of 3 dimensional co-relevance in (1) reframing, (2) readjustments, toward Agape, by the transcendence process, I have experienced this in my own life. It is a lifetime process, which I am still doing and going through. It is Cognitive Science/Buddhism, at a Intersection of East/West. I also have integrated Science of the Universe because of the beauty of that, as it unfolds, in the Study of Philia of Agape. It truly is the crowning glory part. I hope my short statement is clear. I think the work is constructive, clear, and as I go with the Flow in learning, it keeps adding toward my own transcendence at 74. Thank you John. I make I statements John because of our English language being inept. I leave this in your very capable hands. Forever indebted. CDHogarthx2

Sounds a bit like it all comes down to a faulty survival plan. The survival process to date has stopped us looking / directing our attention at love in its full sense? Now that we know this, what do we do? Maybe those who didn't survive held the missing pieces to the puzzle of a successful life. Maybe in losing them we went off course. Look at our planet, loneliness, poverty, joblessness, mental health crisis, time poverty. The message seems to be that there is sacrifice in love. Maybe we need to slow down and control how we direct our attention, seek meaning, wisdom in all we do and don't leave all the sacrificing to others? People of the world unite in the pursuit of peace, meaning and wisdom then maybe we will find love.

16:10 - if the brain is self-evolving/transcending and adapating itself to the world, isn't it also adapting itself to its understanding of the Self - and the structure it evolves to adapt to the Self -- IS -- the Self. The Self is as real as a chair, except more so because it is not only a representation/sign of something, the something is the sign. Pre-egoic is to egoic perhaps as awareness is to love.

If the self’s real, what is it? Which bit of you is it? If you get dementia and lose every memory of your being, are you still your self? You can’t evolve to understand the ‘self’ if you’re continually forgetting your last thought and the one before that, where does the self go? Is the person no longer a person anymore?
