My dad had all John Wayne's movies on DVD. He would watch them over and over......True Grit and North To Alaska were his favourites. My dad passed away February this year he was 87yo...my dad served in the Aussie Army and learnt his trade as a mechanic. My Dad had True Grit.

I was 6 years old. The 1st movie my Dad ever took me to see. My Mom had the church ladies over. When we got home I told them about this scene and repeated the SOB line. My Mom rolled her eyes

A few minutes ago, I watched a video of (supposedly) the ten greatest Western scenes. After seeing that the meadow shootout scene wasn't one of them, I had to go back and watch this one. From 1954 through June 11, 1979, John Wayne was my favorite actor. I met him and got his autograph in 1972. I laminated his autograph the day after he died. I still carry it in my wallet. RIP, John Wayne. The meadow shootout scene is still the best in Western movie history.

I'm not a big John Wayne fan, but I love that line. Seeing the Duke lever-spin the rifle was the entire reason that I viewed this clip.

I grew up where True Grit was filmed. Ate many a picnic in that meadow. Grandfather worked on the ranch where the fence jump was filmed. Uncle served as a livestock wrangle for the film. My dentist repaired Duke's partial plate when it broke and was his personal dentist until the day he died. John is like family to me.

I am 62, and I still love this film.

For all the John Wayne fans out there, take a trip to the Owl Pass area in Colorado to visit the site where this was filmed. Gave me chills to imagine The Duke had been there with the other cast members of this scene. True Grit was one of my Mom’s favorite movies and she passed that on to me.

69 years old. Wife and I are taking a train trip to Flagstaff this August. Ridgway is 6 hrs. drive from Flagstaff. Have to go see the place where this scene was filmed.

In those John Wayne movies, he was always like a wild stallion. He was not afraid of any other man and he couldn't be tamed. RIP John Wayne. Ain't no one going to outdo your movies.

When we fail today to remember the pride and dignity that it takes to defend the principles of democracy, the films of John Wayne remind us over the many years of his career. Immortal words and visual scenes are burned into our memories. He made an album of how he felt as an American. To hear his voice all these years after his death can still touch your heart. He spoke for unity among all people. He was much loved and admired. He still is today. He wasn’t perfect as a person but it was his film work that’s he’s remembered for. The bill of rights let’s you think of your own opinions and let’s you express them. He was entitled to reflect his life’s attitude drawn from his life’s experiences. Don’t criticize him now because the atmosphere in our country has become so divided. He didn’t do that. We did. The first version of this film used a great musical score, and they filmed in the most beautiful countryside. The director picked memorable locations to film the action scenes of the story. This film would not be as special as it is if it’s supporting elements of photography, music, locations, and supporting cast were not found to be the perfect combination. There were enough great things, memorable moments, beauty that filled the heart and soul, violence, tenderness, and saving each other’s lives, that you didn’t really mind that a few couldn’t act because everybody else was so good. When a movie is called great it’s because of the way the story is told. It was enhanced by supporting elements to make it memorable. When Our three main characters began their journey together they were not United. Our Marshall was still drinking and he was stung by the cutting remarks of the Texas ranger that he couldn’t do his job, in the beginning they were both against the girl coming but the Marshall soon opposed every objection the Texas ranger had, so he ends up siding with the girl which means he will have to work to help her survive. Our Marshall runs out of drink that has an affect on his actions and his judgement. By the time the Marshall rides to meet the gang in the meadow he’s cold sober and remembering his duty. The girl wavers in her confidence in the Marshall to be able to get the job done. But he won’t be shown up by that pup of a ranger. Appearances can be deceiving. Even though the Marshall was older, overweight, a drinker, cynical about life, he stood for the badge he wore. He was as rough, and tough, and dangerous as the outlaws he hunted. His pride could be easily hurt. Watch John Wayne’s face when Ned Pepper calls him a one eyed fat man. His reputation as a rough and tough fearless lawman is threatened. He won’t stand for it. In those days wearing a gun did make you judge and jury. So Judge Parker was right. Rooster started out trying to do what the law wanted. But his pride and dignity were threatened. So he attacked. It made him appear brave and fearless. He warned off the others but rats on a sinking ship don’t leave each other. You will remember how hard it was to shoot at fast moving targets. He had a good heart. You can see that in the efforts he made to save Matties life. There were many moments of unspoken affection. It’s there right at the end. She never forgets the example he set her as a man.

Oh Lord that's a great scene, gives me chills!

I have the same feeling today as I did the first time I saw True Grit. John Wayne was, and still is, the only one that could make this scene believable. RIP Duke.

My grandfather gave me a horse when I was 7 years old. I named him Bo, after John Wayne's horse in this movie.

Way back in the day my grandpa was a young man working as an Elevator Attendant at a hotel in Seattle. John Wayne was staying in the hotel and came into the elevator drunk as a skunk and another guy started talking smack to Wayne. Wayne didn’t take kindly to that and when he cocked back to punch the guy he accidentally caught my grandpa with his elbow and knocked him out. Wayne was so apologetic he gave my Grandpa a $5 bill which was a lot back then. Both are now gone and I have that $5 bill.

From across the pond in England, the 'Duke' is my all time favourite actor and True Grit my all time Favourite john Wayne film, i grew up on cowboy films and TV series like Bonanza, The High Chaparral, Rawhide, Gunsmoke was a little to early for me but they showed reruns on UK TV. happy memories.

An iconic scene. The look on Wayne's face when he hears the 'one-eyed fat man' quip is priceless. The Duke may be riding the range in Heaven now, but he will never be forgotten and will live on through his films.

I love a western. My dad loved em too, and we used to watch them together when I was a little bloke… over 50 years ago. He’s be gone 25 years now, and these films remind me of those days. This is one of john Wayne’s best characters, and one of the best shoot outs. I much prefer this version to the new one. Rio bravo is my favorite though, but that might have something to do with the very hot Angie dickensen.

That will always be the best western shootout scene ever!

What I love about this scene is when he bites down on the reigns of his horse. It shows that he was one of Quantrill’s Raiders, southern rebels who took up arms when their state was ordered to be “depopulated”. They would go on suicide missions, riding through Union camps guiding their horses using their teeth and pair of 45s. Blowing away anything that moved. In “The Outlaw Josey Whales” when Whales offers to live in peace with Ten Bears. Ten Bears counters that Whales has nothing to offer him, he already has the land and the cattle. Whales’s response is to bite down on the reigns of his horse and put his hands on his guns…

Now, THAT'S A MAN...!!! No one can touch Mr. John Wayne....

They created a remake of True Grit, but no one outdoes John Wayne. Not in 1000 years. The old True Grit movie was my dad's favorite, and mine too ever since the first time we saw it.

That was one one of the classic and best joined wayne scenes.

I'm 64 years old and John Wayne was my hero. Along with Chuck Connors, Roy Rogers, and a few others. Great scene, a great movie. And the remake was actually good!

Have set foot on that very meadow, in front of that very Chimney Rock and the very rock the Duke falls by in Colorado... it was quite water-logged in late May of 2018. It's not easy to get to, but surely worth it... hallowed ground for western fans the world over, and I spent 40 years in HOLLYWOOD and never got to work on a single western movie. Great presentation tribute!

My favorite scene was the dugout. Jeremy Slate and Dennis Hopper were great in that scene. John Wayne gave so many actors their jump it was astounding.

As a Side Bar. Among the tsa la gee people (Cherokee) of the Indian Nation. Where this took place. A Turkey Gobble was always a call to all warriors to battle. This explains the chuckle among the outlaws. This movie is spot on in so many ways. And one of my all-time favorites.

I've been to the meadow. I spent the better part of an afternoon there. It was a surreal feeling. Every John Wayne fan should go.

John Wayne was the best, bigger than life and true to his character!

Planning to go down to that True Grit country again in late September of this year. Have been there in the past, but not in the Fall (when this was shot). I've visited all the filming locations of True Grit in Colorado. I plan to do the Last Dollar Road where Mattie's farm scene was, as well as Owl Creek Pass, where the shootout was filmed in Deb's Meadow and the pass location itself, where they camped for the night. This will probably be my last trip down to True Grit country in my life. I'm looking forward to it.

John Wayne is Immortal in my family

Just FYI, I see a lot of people referencing the Coen Brothers True Grit at a remake of this movie. It was not, they Coen Brother's used the original novel to write their script, so the reason the dialogue is the same in much of the movie, is because both movies lifted much of the dialogue straight out of the novel. The Charles Porter novel is a classic, if you have no read it.

The final shootout scene in a meadow on Owl Creek pass about 10 miles East of Ridgway is on a road that leads into the Silverjack valley. My wife and I have been going there since 1979. Easily the most beautiful camping area in Colorado. When watching that first True Grit movie they had Rooster leading the Texas Ranger and Maddie through an Aspen forest. I knew immediately that "this movie wasn't filmed in Arkansas!
