Well my father and I both liked him very much. I wasn't commenting on his morals or character, just his acting ability and heavy work ethic. Drunk or not I felt his acting improved greatly over the decades. I've been addicted to things and cheated and been cheated on. I never said he was a Christ like figure, just that I felt he deserved the standing ovation for his exceptionally productive career. I am wondering what the hell he may have done to you to elicit such a pained response...I've never ever been a fan of war/killing/forcing our beliefs on others in the world either. If he had refused to go to war in the recent past he would likely be touted as a peace activist. Everything is relative.

Second, as a 14 year old Brit I suggest you study a little about the history of racism in America. As a 44 year old American I can assure you that the majority of people here in 1971 were most definitely NOT white supremacists. There was a huge civil rights movement in the US in the 1960’s that led to sweeping changes in antiquated anti-black laws especially in southern states where black people were segregated to the point they weren’t allowed to stay in the se hotels as whites, eat at the same restaurants, use the same bathrooms or even the same drinking fountains. See the problem is people like you want to turn a blind eye to everything EXCEPT white supremacy. Why? Because it's the cool thing right now. Stop being a sheep. Bottom line is John Wayne is a LEGEND. Not because of what he told someone in an interview, but because of...His acting! *gasp* Oh, and the democratic party was the racist ones from day one. Abraham Lincoln had to fight them as a Republican. There, chew on that.

@@Stopsign32v ok you’re right. By your logic it’s definitely ok that he saw black people as second class citizens. Categorizing people by race is ok because you think my objection to it is based on it being trendy to do so. Gotcha. I hate misogyny towards women too. That must make me an asshole as well

@@maxsands3861 but Hillary was right: Jan.6. Those self-called "Patriots" were nothing but vicious and violent insurrectionists and traitors, driven by White Supremacist fears of a changing National Demographic. Those White Supremacists we're Hillary's "Deplorables". John Wayne was an openly self admitted White Supremacist. A TRUE AMERICAN PATRIOT does not marginalize an entire segment of their own Citizenry as inferior and deserving of fewer rights than other Citizens. Wrapping yourself in a flag does not make you a patriot. Standing up and tirelessly fighting Injustice, Poverty and Hate, while fighting FOR World Peace and National Cooperation and Harmony is being a Patriot.

Eastwood popularized the amiable, lawless cowboy hero character. Wayne always hated him for darkening the traditional cowboy hero persona. Never socialized, or wanted to work with him because of it. That's show biz.

In terms of the Oscar's or other acting awards John Wayne was seriously under rated. Without doubt his best performances were in westerns but that doesn't make him a limited actor. Just look at his performance in The Searcher's in particular and how he makes what he does look easy and so natural.I picked out The Searcher's as a prime example but there were more that we are all familiar with. Deserved the Oscar he got but he should have had one before.

The more I learn about John Wayne, the more I admire him. He was beloved by practically everyone he ever met, including those who assumed they would hate him because of their wildly opposite political and societal viewpoints. The man was a consummate professional and was incredibly gracious to everyone. And this 70-second speech exemplifies all that I've come to know and appreciate about the man. He was infinitely humble and outwardly focused, realizing that his success has as much to do about others as it does about his own efforts. Oh, that not only Hollywood, but the entire world, had more John Waynes in it today.
