His tattoo reads "Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat", or "Fortune Favors the Brave" in Latin. Keanu is awesome, he underwent a lot of training to be proficient in weapons, fighting and driving so they could film the scenes without too many cuts and always show Keanu in frame. Gives it that more real/grounded feeling. Also, a nice subtle detail about the dog he takes in the end, it was scheduled to be put down, that's why he chose it.

"Fotris Fortuna Adiuvat" has multiple translations/meanings: Fortune Favors the Brave/Bold/Strong. Regardless, all are appropriate.

@@danw3391 There's a slew of conflicting info out there too. I scoured various discussion threads on the topic for months (years before John Wick came out) for my own tattoo. From the various sources I found, Fortis is Strong, and Audeces is Bold (which I ended up using for mine). Makes sense, Fortitude versus Audaciousness. Never saw Adiuvat for Favor. I found newer Latin sources use Juvat. I went with the older Iuvat (before the language adopted the J). Ultimately landing on Audeces Fortuna Iuvat for mine. I did reach out to a couple Latin professors on those boards to confirm and they said it worked, so heheh, no idea... got it inked, then recognized it when the movie later came out.

I don't know. They made a prequel series of Taken and it lasted 2 seasons because they screwed it up. Let's face it, they will make the mistake with John Wick.

That 2nd guy also gave John crucial info in code about how many people were inside, John respects him and gives him the opportunity to not be involved. Just a chef's kiss of a scene.

Answer to a small question : yes their coins are gold "tokens". They're payment for completely a job and pay for everything involving the guild. Also, Marcus (Willem DeFoe) was John's friend for long while. The sniping scene where he missed was on purpose. He was warning John she was there.

About the dog that got "killed" at the beginning of the movie: "Unsurprisingly, Andy, who was particularly friendly, was extremely popular on set. Not only did he bond with Reeves right away, he made Omer Barnea, the actor who had to "kill" Andy, feel super guilty. As Krafsky remembered, "He felt horrible. Every time the director yelled cut, he just picked up the dog and cuddled him."

That scene where Wick is making his monologue about "being back", I hear just a little bit of his old accent/ mannerism in it. Its right before the bag is put over his head. I had that same thought after seeing this for the first time.

I love the Baba Yaga references in this movie because Baba Yaga is one of my favorite witch story’s who has been villainous and at times helpful. I’ve always wanted to know her motivations and how she thought in her walking cabin/house. Love you’re reactions Dasha!! The fact that you’re Russian and could translate anything that wasn’t scripted just made me smile ear to ear! Keep up the awesome content! And letting us know how the Russian accents were in the movie! You are very perceptive because most reactors don’t catch the fact that the dog crawled to him. Most people think they placed the dog there as a slap in the face or something.

It is my understanding that the tattoo on John Wick's back translates "Fortune favors the bold" and that is the motto of a US Marine company in Hawaii which indicates he has military experience as part of his background.

The director used to be a stuntman; that's why the fight scenes are so amazingly choreographed. I also recommend you watch Eastern Promises, it's about the Russian mafia in London.

They did the guns perfectly. They made sure that every round of ammo was accounted for and he had to change clips when the bullets would really have run out.

Thanks for the translation/insights into Russian. It added a lot. Great reaction! If you liked the fight choreography in this movie I suggest you watch Serenity. It has a couple of the most beautifully choreographed fight scenes that I have ever seen. But first you should watch the short lived series Firefly, of which the movie is an extension. The movie Serenity stands on its own, but ties up a few of the loose end left when the series Firefly was cut short and is more enjoyable if you go into it already familiar with the characters. It’s probably the best sci-fi space western ever made.

A lot of these people are from the Matrix like the doctor that fixed John Wick played the keymaker in the matrix. This movie was directed by the stunt coordinator of the Matrix movies. That's why every shot was well choreographed almost like a dance.

Dasha, I love ❤️ when you get to watch a movie with lots of Russian speech! It's fun to watch you tear apart what they say because for some reason Hollywood doesn't want us to hear Russian correctly 🤣 From your reaction, though, it would seem Keanu (John Wick) got most of his lines correct, which is great 👍 It just shows how excellent an actor he is and is determined to do his best in everything. Baba Yaga is referenced correctly in Ant-Man and the Wasp. I don't know why the writers got it wrong, but they went with it once they committed to keeping it in the movie. I think you'll like John Wick 2, it goes more into his background.

I think the boogey man translates better into english than a wolf.. or atleast simplifies it for english audience. Would prefer wolf myself tho, sounds more bad ass..

For the police coming to check on noise complaint, some of the police do know about John Wick being an assassin and the secret assassin underworld, even if they're not directly part of it.

Your explanation of Babayaga sounds like the story of Hansel and Gretal, which is a "Grimm's Faery Tale." The Grimm brothers, gathered all the "stories with a moral" from their travels - including Eastern European folklore - to create fairy tales meant to scare children into behaving. Thank you for the explanation of the word. It makes a few things come together for me.

The thing I found amazing about Baba Yaga is she had a moblile home before they were a thing. Her house was like a tardis from Dr. Who, bigger on the inside than the outside. It moved because it had giant chicken or some sort of bird legs growing out of it's bottom to carry it around.

I didn't know the story of Baba Yaga was so similar to Hansel and Gretel. A story about a witch in the woods that eats children. Very cool to see reactions from native speakers in foreign language films. I have learn a bunch of cool stuff about Squid Games in a similar fashion.

That's the only similarity. Baba Yaga isn't a lazy bum who just sits at home waiting for children to come to her. Think of her more like an anti-hero version of Santa Claus. She is a respected mountain witch who would bring good tidings if you behaved (like Santa giving presents), but punish you if you were bad. If you think about it, it would have been used by parents to scare their kids to not go exploring alone in the woods, when in reality kids that went missing might have been hunted by wild animals or got lost and died somewhere where their body couldn't be found, so the parents used this supernatural entity as a way to s=make their kids behave.

They didn't shoot the dog they used a bat on a puppy, even worse. A bullet would have been an instant kill just from the shock/trauma the bat meant it suffered longer as shown by the bloody trail it left crawling to John.

John Wick (Keanu Reeves) was born Jardani Jovonovich in Belarus. He was an orphan, and was taken in by the Tarasov Russian Mafia where he was raised as an assassin. ... At the beginning of the first film, Wick has been retired from the mafia for five years.

The best part is this movie is only the beginning. There are 2 more John Wick movies out already as well as 2 more in the works (John Wick 4 is due out the end of May 2022 and 5 probably in 2023 or 2024). Such an amazing series!

Well in case your wondering, the gold Coins are used *as a currency for services in the underworld,* instead of paper money or credit card, as these coins are mostly untraceable by the banks or authority. The coins are used mostly in the Continental Hotel chains for various underworld services but other underworld services can also be paid by the coins.

He was singing the lullaby at the club, essentially making fun of it because he didn't think John Wick was that dangerous or scary to be called Baba Yaga. Also at the end, it showed that the dog was going to be put down and he saved it by bringing it with him.

I enjoyed your reaction very much, and your ability to explain the Russian dialogue and folklore helps me as a viewer appreciate the film more for those details. I would love to see your reactions to the sequel movies John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum. John Wick: Chapter 4 is expected to be released in May 2022 and a fifth movie is also planned. Chapter 2 has some Russians in it too so I'd love to hear from you if the movie folks were accurate in their dialogue translations.

Like in mexican folklore... La llorona is one our parents used to scare us into behaving .. especially when camping by rivers etc .. or el cucuy which is our basic boogie man ... Usually used to get us to go to bed... Lol ..

Thanks for explaining to people who didn't know about baba yaga. I ended up laughing when I saw the movie cause I knew baba yaga was female, but I have an oddly extensive knowledge of various myths from around the world. Not everyone does.

Where I grew up (UK) nursery rhymes were nice little songs like "baa baa black sheep" and if you were naughty then Santa wouldn't bring you toys for Christmas. In Russia, nursery rhymes are about kids getting bitten by wolves and if you are naughty then an old witch will boil you alive and eat you. I'm betting children are more well-behaved in Russia.

The dog that he rescued from the kennel was a Pit Bull, the clipboard on the cage door is stamped with 'To Be Put Down', so John rescued the dog from euthanasia.

Also at the end he didn't just steal a dog. If you can read the papers on the cage the dog is scheduled to be put down. It was probably a animal shelter and nobody wanted to adopt it. He saved the dog from being killed.

You should watch the 2019 movie, Hellboy. It's a really good movie based on a comic character and they actually have a Baba Yaga in it. I think you'll like the way Baba Yaga is shown.

I'm subscribing, as I think this Lady's translation is so accurate. I spent time in Russia learning the Language. My first Language was English, then German and then Russian for the "Rat Lines" I'm old and bold now, but the "Cold War" left a lot of Lads with the Skills, but too old to be employed. The tales of Baba Yaga vary slightly among the different Eastern European nations, but in most cases, she is an old witch who lives in the forest and usually eats small children. In my home country, Bulgaria, parents often tell stories about Baba Yaga to their children, warning them that if they are disobedient, don't eat their food, or don't sleep enough, Baba Yaga will come to take them away or eat them. 😅😅😅

Baba Yaga the witch. I remember seeing pictures of her years ago when I was growing up because my granny used to translate to Russian into English and she would have these books full of Russian and different pictures of Russian and Slavic creatures and characters from folklore.
