The thing that makes John Wick so good is the same thing that made the original Die Hard so good. John isn't immortal, he can be hurt, he has nearly been killed multiple times. Seeing him continue to win fights despite the injuries is what makes his character so imposing. Not just simply his fighting skill, but his resourcefulness and will to win.

What's great about this, is that this scene was actually suggested by Keanu himself. See in the first movie, someone said a line to the effect of "Watch out, he killed 3 people with a pencil." So when they came back to do JW2 Keanu was like "Hey, I should probably actually kill someone with a pencil huh?" I love that about him, completely dedicated to the characters he plays.

The thing I like John Wick is that he is not an immortal, he can be injured, hurt and even killed. He survived and fight back using every tactics, skills and favour he got in his whole life.

I love how in this scene we get a 3 minute montage of different hitmen trying to get the bounty on John, it feels like they should be drawn out 5 minute fight sequences but for John it’s just another 3 minutes.

This scene shows that while killing people with a pencil may sound tame, it’s realistically very messy and hard when we see it, as the kills are extremely slow, unpleasant, messy and painful looking deaths to watch. Not to mention the pencil afterwards covered in brain matter.

3 things I love about John Wick: 1. He uses anything in his environment. Like Jackie Chen. But in a very brutal way. Jackie, on the other hand, never kills his opponents, he only immobilises them... Both are awesome. 2. He treats an adversary as an adversary, irrespective of gender 3. Unlike other action heroes, he does feel compelled to showoff his machismo by throwing off his gun and fighting bare hands. Sure he fights with bare hands when need arises, but as soon as he gains hold of anything that can be used as a weapon, he does so immediately. Make plenty and good use of knives, guns, broken glass bottles, AND pencils.
