Angling Times joins TV's most famous angler - John Wilson - as he counts down his top 10 greatest catches.
Number 6: A wobbled smelt tempted this 27lb 8oz pike from the Norfolk Broads, a fish that would have been much heavier later in the season.
Footage taken from John Wilson's 20 Greatest Catches double DVD. Available from Canny Store, tel: 01386 593696.

RIP Mr Wilson you were with out a doubt the biggest influence in my life. When TV only had 4 channels but that didn't matter because we had go fishing recorded on VHS to watch over and over until we knew it word for word. Thank you for the memories John 👍

What a legend. Loved watching him in the early 1990's when I first started fishing as a boy. Such enthusiasm, passion, and a joyful love of the sport. Unlike a lot of today's fishing media\TV shows\videos, he wasn't sponsored or trying to sell anything, so the instruction and advice felt honest and trustworthy. I know he had his own brand of rods etc, but it was never mentioned or pushed in his footage. He felt like one of us. An example of which is in this clip, when he misses netting the pike and the fish shoots off and he almost loses the net, the rod, and the fish! All done with an awkward and clumsy charm which made him feel relatable and real. He seemed approachable and warm, a difficult thing to get across through a camera lens. Rest in peace John. Maybe you weren't the 'best angler ever' in terms of achievements ecords\competitions etc, but you were certainly one of the most skilful, one of, if not 'THE', most knowledgeable, and definitely the most liked. You inspired a generation, and what greater legacy can there be?

Thanks for everything John, you were an absolute legend ... As a young boy growing up in Northamptonshire in the 80's you were one of the few motivations in life and watching you on the Telly with awe I soon had Jack Pike, Perch, Roach and Carp of a decent size in the bag with the help of my Dad, however later on in life when I had the cash and equipment I set out to become a specimen hunter of sorts bagging a pike of 27 lbs plus from Nottinghamshire, A Carp over 34 lbs from Hampshire, a Perch over 5 lbs in Northamptonshire, a 3 1/2 lbs Roach in the river Nene, a 16 lb Barbel from the Trent near Nottingham, and my targeted personal species of choice was a Chub at 7.5 lb, definitely a CLONKER from a tributary of the Nene. John, sleep well my unknown uncle .... we'll all miss you. Big love captain. x

A True poineer of British TV! Well done Mr J Wilson , well done you!!! You brought so much interesting filming to us at home when most of the population couldn't watch any other fishing shows and there wasn't as many commercial fisheries around! Although the chemicals released into the waterways were so much worse back then we seemed to have more water flowing through so we did have quite a few more fish apart from the huge rivers near city's were industry really did kill everything off near there ie the salmon that had to swim through the toxic waste but up stream things were better then than now it seems as so very much water is taken all the way up the system so even a small overflow from suawage plants and farms make a huge difference and damage since there is hardly any water left!! My first pike from Sussex royal military canal was 28lbs and my younger brother got a 30lb and they are very much rare now but not too difficult to get in the 80s!! Just wish I'd switched from course to game fishing a little bit earlier as my quest for a fresh caught salmon from my two yearly trips to Scotland are fruitless and iv been trying for almost three years now!! I'm trying to get one before climet change stops all salmon fishing in the UK but it's not easy!!!

Beautiful fish... I always get a little freaked out when I see guys keep fish out of the water longer than I do. The fish was probably fine, no doubt but pike and pickerel are sensitive fish in my experience. You can swing bass around all day, take a picture, look it in the face while going “nah nah nahnah nahhh!” and it’ll swim away while giving you the finger with one of its fins...only for you to catch the same fish again later and it looks at you like “this idiot again? ugh, fine...”. As big and mean as pike look, they bum out a lot more when you catch them. I’ve found myself having to revive pickerel after a short fight and only 30 seconds or so out of the water.

60 years experience and netted more fish for a top angler on the Royalty at Chirstchurch and more Carp in lakes than you have had hot dinners. I have witnessed many anglers loose fish by treating it like a butterfly net. Bring the fish over the net.
