Thanks John, Every now and then I conduct a search for Quorn Tool and Cutter Grinder, usually with a bunch of irrelevant results. A few days ago I finally struck gold with 4 or 5 channels, I'm working through the videos. The half hour I have just spent watching this video is the best use of time I've had for a while. Several years ago I purchased a completed Quorn in similar condition with similar errors. I cleaned it up and fixed the show stopper errors. Of course the rust came back to visit, I see some 303 SS in my future. I will also convert from existing collets to ER series. I will watch this video several more times and cast a critical eye over my little machine again.

Thanks for sharing this video, John! I really like the idea of using an ER collet holder. I am just about to machine my own Quorn Tool holders and may just copy your idea! Would love to see a Part 2 (or more) where you grind up some tools! Thanks!

I cannot claim credit for the idea as someone else did its the hard way and made the er32 collet chuck and arbor. Crazy when they parts are very cheaply available nicely ground. PM me if you struggle to find an Er32 collet chuck on the correct length of arbor. I have one in Imperial size that is spare. I have used these collet chucks and arbors several times for making small milling spindles. If you haven't tried, though hard they can easily be threaded without having to heat them up. They cut a very nice clean thread especially if it is a fine one. John

John, I have found an ER20 collet shaft on eBay with a 5/8” diameter shaft, 100mm long straight section and 135mm overall length. The Er20collet set would accept all of my smaller cutters. What do you think about using that in place of the standard 5/8” shaft.

@@metalmill52 I used an ER16 for the smaller holder and for the larger one I used an ER20 at first until I got hold of the ER32.I sleeved the ER20 collet shaft to fit the 20mm that it had been bored. The ER32 was 20mm dia so fitted a as straight swap. I have collet sets for all 3. John

Thanks, John! I think I will try ER20 and 5/8 shaft for spiraling tool holder. May go with ER25 and 1” shaft for regular tool holder as I already have a set of ER25 collets (for my mini-mill). Then go with 5C for the large tool holder since I have a very complete set of 5C collets for my lathe (round, square and hex collets).Appreciate your thoughtful reply.

hi john just recently bought a quorn and wanting to do some improvements the tool holder on mine is 1" diamemeter and i want to put a ER 32 collet chuck on , the one ive seen is 32mm diameter shaft so i would have to reduce the diameter. does it sound feasible to you cheers john

This video came up as a suggestion so of course i had to watch it being a Quorn owner. I bought mine as a failed part build and finished it, most of the castings had been done to a reasonable standard but one thing the builder didnt try was the engraving. As a beginning i made some sticky labels with the markings and i did 0-360 rather than 0 45 0 etc thst the book suggests. When i finally did proper engraving i followed the book, which i then discovered was a bad move. With 0 45 0 you have far too many numbers that are the same which is confusing. Stamping 0 360 there is only one particular number and all but the innumerate will know where they are. Regarding er collets, no doubt by now you have got it all up and running, do you find it inconvenient that you can't remove the collet holder from the Quorn for close inspection of the work?
