It's so sad. I think there's something to be said for dressing up for church, as a sign of respect and reverence- but no one should feel unwelcome if they don't/ can't.

@@Amcsae I was once living in a homeless shelter and went to this wonderful tiny church one Sunday (various churches would pick us up on Sunday because of course). On the ride back, one of the parishioners asked me, "So when you meet god at the pearly gates... .would you rather be dressed like you are? (I lived in a frickin homeless shelter) Or like I am? (in a suit)." Needless to say, I never went back.

My Mom comes from a time when folks truly dressed up for church. Ladies got their hair done, shoes had to match the dress. Gentlemen wore their best suits. Little girls wore fancy bows in their hair. When I went to church as a little girl, I wore white gloves and shiny black patent leather shoes. Good times, good times!

@Pamela Mays we must have grown up around the same time (and were you in the Midwest?), as I was also wearing black (and white, depending on the season) shiny patent leather shoes! And if it was Easter that called for a new hat with the white gloves and shoes for sure! :-)

This makes me appreciate my church so much. Some of us show up in avengers tees and shorts while some of us are always in dress pants, ties, and button up shirts. NOBODY makes it a divisive issue for the most part and it's great.

That is great. Only if all churches were able to discern between what is important and what is not. It seems that usually churches either compromise on Scripture, or make up nonsensical rules that are no where found in Scripture. It is hard to find one that both takes a confident stand on Scripture as well as embracing the liberty and variety of the body of Christ.

@@annav6037 Use safety pins and put the name tag on their back. That's what we do. The other half of the claim check goes to the parents so a stranger doesn't walk off with your kid or a counselor doesn't try to hand over the wrong kid, which is embarrassing. But that is what we do with the claim check--we don't have name tags, but same concept!

It’s the biggest blessing when you travel often for work. I’ve been to Mass in Muslim Algeria in French and in a remote village in Mozambique in Portuguese. Its such a blessing to have this.

Can't relate to trying on outfits for church because here in small town Montana you go in whatever is cleanest and nobody is going to care. The pastor one time was out elk hunting that morning and was running late so he just preached in camo smelling like elk urine. Nobody seemed to mind, we were however interested to know if he had got into any bulls. I have, in the past, realized that I haven't done laundry for the week yet, too late on a Sunday and just watched the service online. I don't think I have been to a church that cared what you showed up in since I was a kid in Lutheran church.

Consider yourself lucky... When I went to a Pentecostal church in Philadelphia they said I could not be a greeter unless I wore a long skirt and none of the women talked to me and I couldn't understand why until I noticed I was never in skirts I was always in jeggings or black dress pants. It So sad because heaven is definitely come as you are and we cannot worship our God in full communion if we are sitting there wondering what people are thinking of us.

@@BeeBeeimonotfact Dang! that would stink going to church and having to worry about if what you were wearing fit their definition of "OK" :( I did get told one time that I could not date girls from the local Mennonite church(we have a lot of Amish and "Amish lite" (aka Mennonite) folks out here) because I was in the Marine Corps (infantry), served in combat and I have been divorced. Apparently they have some pretty strict rules in those departments. That's about the only religion based discrimination I have ever been around.

Our preacher used to be a mechanic and always made sure to rush home to wash up, well one time the hours just wasn’t on his side and did his class in full mechanic gear. No one really cared, it was a Wed. Class, honestly we all had a crack at it

I can’t relate but not Pentecostal. Our only options are a modest dresses or skirts for the women and suits/slacks for the men. If you’re in a singles’ ward you can get away with a little more casual but never jeans and a t-shirt.

Grew up southern Baptist. Everyone dressed like they were going to work. Then went to Nazarene, which is basically the same without the Calvinism. Dress seemed to be determined by status and visibility. The professional crowd and anyone getting on stage usually wore a suit or full-length dress, and the blue collars usually a t-shirt and jeans. I went to Charismatic church for a little bit where they dressed to the nines, but were highly biblically inaccurate, bordering on heretical.

My city dwelling Baptist Church, you dress up. Finest church clothes you can find, some times visitors wear jeans but even causal clothes have to fit a fine dining rules. 🤷

My family recently started going to church again, and most of my clothes are packed away so I just wear the same three dresses with different sweaters and shoes😂 though I recently found the bin with the rest of my dresses and skirts so I might start wearing some of those

I always have worn either a skirt or dress pants to church (depending on the church). However, at my husband's family's church they seem to have a color dress code. I have only ever seen one other woman there wear a pastel color other than me. But no-one has ever said anything to me, so I usually just don't match.

This was gold! Thankfully, my church is cool and most people have a decent sense of taste. I play on the worship team and wear flannel shirts most days, so I might have to pull the four-buttons-unbuttoned trick. Can't go wrong with John Crist at your back!

Once I asked my husband if my dress was ok for church. He said "you can pull it off." lol I said NO that's not the answer I was looking for. Needless to say I changed my outfit!
