• Regal Joins AMC In Ban...
Jack Drees - It's the battle of the century! Cinemas vs. Universal! Turns out that Regal is now enforcing similar policies to AMC in response to Universal's recent ideas of putting their movies out at home around the same time as in theaters, which diminishes the sacred theatrical window. Could this situation get bigger? Will it die off fast? What are your thoughts?

@Ne Ws Well the law is still the law. You broke the law and got f**ked up and btw agree or disagree, going to the theater is still the best experience. Films like TeneT or Dune, Toy Story are the reason why the theater will always stay strong. (*Putting David Lynch quote about watching movies on an Iphone here)

@Ne Ws overpricing is a problem, but it isn't obligatory. I take my own snacks and drinks and I don't feel rude at all, the staff don't even oppose it if you aren't too brazen about it. The benefits of keeping studios and theatres separate outweigh the negatives as far as I can see it. If Disney owns theatres, what reason would they have to show Universal or Sony movies, knowing my luck, our local cinema would be Warner Bros or something.

NO studi o wants this other than Universal. No more than you want to spend thousands of dollars into a project and get pennies back for it. People are looking at AMC's problems and acting like theaters in general will disappear, they are not. If they do then quality of movies will diminish, there will only be streaming and TV movies coming out, and yes Netflix can throw away bucks to spend on whatever but movie studios doesn't work like that.

Toy Story 2 became a 100% RT title because Pixar knew they had make a great film after Disney decided to release it in theaters instead of direct to video. Much of the film was reworked and made with less than a year to the release date. Also, Stuber is not Universal, it was 20th Century/Disney.

At first, I thought it was ridiculous that theaters were getting so upset over Trolls World Tour since the original was nothing more than mediocre kids schlock and it's literally a sequel that no one asked for, meaning it wouldn't have brought in that much money either for Universal nor the theaters. But after hearing all this from Universal, now I understand why theaters are upset with them because if you release a movie in theaters and on streaming at the same time, people are not going to see the point in going to the theater to watch that movie when they can just sit at home and watch it on their TVs. What Universal was trying to do was nothing more than a desperate get rich quick scheme, which of course backfired on them since their partners, the theaters, who are the major source of income that their movies receive, are not OK with this tactic, especially if it means screwing them over in the process. So yeah, I understand why theaters don't want to show their movies now. I wouldn't want to either after learning about this information.

This actually genius on the cinema side. By saying no to universal yes they will lose money. But universal may also lose talent. So many top tier directors go on and on about loving the theatrical experience. Why would those directors now take projects to universal if they know there’s a chance they may not get the theatrical experience.

@@c17sam90 The existence of Netflix and HBO is a direct contradiction of what you're saying about directors. Hundreds of directors are working on Netflix and HBO projects every year. Zack Snyder,David Fincher,Martin Scorsese,Russo Brothers and numerous others. Not to mention that younger directors don't seem to care because they want work experience and are often preferred because studios want creative control. A lot of directors need any kind of work they can get, they don't get paid millions like the actors. Only the really famous directors do. AMC would not win in a war like this, especially when like half of movie goers in surveys say they aren't coming back to theatres for many months after the pandemic. AMC also just took out a loan and are on the verge of bankruptcy.
@c17sam90

Nyiko Maswanganyi not fully Irishman and Roma got theatrical release still. Fincher’s Netflix film will get a limited theatrical release probably depending on if cinemas are open the same with Spike Lee’a. Snyder is a different story. I haven’t seen any directors go to HBO for movies. Russo’s I don’t believe have directed any Netflix films at this produced have just produced one but their previous produced film 21 bridges got a theatrical release. Again I can only see this stopping top tire people wanting to work with them. AMC on their own is only one company and in the U.K. other cinema chains are saying no to universal. That’s the interesting side it’s not just one cinema chain.

It can also affect talent on the actors as well. Apparently a lot of cast weren’t happy about Trolls being PVOD because they get bonuses when the box office hits certain milestones that now they won’t get. And even if they could hit it studios aren’t obligated to release VOD numbers so they could hide the benchmarks being hit from actors if they wanted.

We've always seen things change as time goes on, at one point people assumed we'd always have VHS tapes then DVDs came along and now we have streaming services, a lot of physical media has been slowly going away by the waste side and it'll soon be a thing of the past.... we've always been looking for ways to make our life more convenient and maybe VOD is the way of the future Universal is seeing right now. Are we going to be seeing billion dollar films in the future? Maybe not for a while given the situation we are currently all in right now. I cant fault Universal for possibly looking ahead to secure a future for their business. I also understand why movie theater companies will lash out at companies like Universal who take these measures because movie theaters want to stay afloat as long as they can. Hopefully some middle ground can be accomplished from all of this but I highly doubt.

They didn't cheat anything. The theatres don't want fair competition which would benefit the consumers, the fact they have been doing it for years makes it worse. If movie theatres are good and worth the money competition from VOD shouldn't worry them. If they aren't worth the price they charge something should change. Let the free market sort this one out not the theatres colluding to stop competition.

This situation is entirely of Universal's own making - there was zero need for the original statement to be made and all it has done is kicked over a hornets nest of trouble for them. It will hurt Universal much more if their tentpole franchise movies (Jurassic World & Fast) that cost several hundred million dollars to actually make are not in the vast majority of cinema chains in the US to make that money back and indeed go on to make profit - yes the cinemas will take a hit but if it is only Universal films they will stop showing then it will not be as bad for them as they still have the other studios support. Universal didn't have one film crack the top 11 domestic grossing films in 2019 so they can ill afford to have their films not showing in cinemas - especially if it involves the largest chain in the US.

They still have some massively popular films. Many coming out in the next year or so. Univeral has Halloween, Conjuring, Jurassic World, Fast and Furious, and many others. With theatres on the verge of bankruptcy they need every movie they can get to pull people in. Plus if people have to split up where they see movies they will be less likely to sign up for, or cancel, the subscriptions services like AMC A-List at the theatres, which would cost them more money again.

It's the theater chains that can't afford to lose Universal, not the other way around. Fast and the Furious and Jurassic World are billion dollar films. They cannot afford to lose that long money revenue. And if Universal is successful with VOD releases (and they will be) the other studios will jump on it. Once audiences gets used to watching big films day one on VOD, the landscape of the theater experience will never be the same again.

Njideka Ike - I think the streaming service also keeps a cut. Might not be as large, but even if studios kept all of it, the total amount they make with streaming is probably much smaller than what they make theatrically (even taking into account the theatres cut which I believe is more like 30%). Otherwise all studios would be telling theatres to shove it, but it doesn’t seem like they are...

But this is assuming that as we come out of our stay-at-home that theaters are going to be anywhere near normal capacity AND that the desire to go to those theaters will be the same as it was pre-pandemic. They won't and it won't. Theaters are going to have to physically reduce capacity to have social distancing which will gut ticket sales. People themselves will be more reluctant to go fill up an auditorium. It doesn't help AMC at all, but I totally understand Universal looking to broaden the distribution to release day VOD. I will agree that it was monumentally dumb for the Universal rep to speak out of turn. But also remember the theaters had the same initial reaction to MoviePass and though MoviePass went down in flames what do you know AMC has a subscription offering now.

Universal definitely has a big move up their sleeve. It’s no way that they are making moves like this without something big planned in the future. I think the big movie/entertainment companies (ie Universal, Disney) are now realizing that they have depending on the theaters way too much in the past and that they need a new model to get their product out to the masses. The music industry realized this a few decades ago about the old record store model that was played out and now their whole industry is digital. I wouldn’t be shocked if Universal comes out with a new streaming service in the future!

All the physical stores that sells just that stuff are basically gone or on life support. They have completely cut out the middle man and just sell their stuff online digitally. This virus just speeded everything up. The movie theater model is not going to last. I give it about 2 more years before the digital movie stuff takes over!

@@aarong3000 once again all those things are not like movies. The moment trolls went to streaming it was up on torrent sites. If you really think they'll make the same amount of money they do from theaters if they put it on a streaming platform you're crazy. All they care about is money, not your enjoyment.

At this point, I'm really curious how the deals with Trolls: World Tour simultaneous cinema and home release got agreed upon, considering this (rightful) stigma about playing movies in a theater that are also released on digital platforms simultaneously.

I think the theaters have more to loose. Yes some movies you want to see on the big screen... However if I can pay like $20 to rent a brand new movie for 24 hours, where I don't have to deal with people talking and missing something, or have the ability to pause for a bathroom break, or even be able to watch the movie when I have time. That means that you don't have to plan and schedule to the theaters start times.... Who cares how long your pre movie dinner takes.

This is the only aspect of the film distribution system where the theaters have the power. Universal knows damn well they're not going to make enough money releasing their biggest movies on VOD. Jurassic World Dominion isn't going to make the billion dollars it will need to make to be profitable on VOD. Universal knows that. They never intended to release THOSE movies in this dual format they're suggesting. It was never about them. But, even suggesting they might do that with ANY movies is going to piss off the theaters and the theaters can seriously punish Universal for that. The chains can refuse to show ANY Universal movies, including the massive blockbusters Universal needs them to show, especially coming out of the massive slump the shutdown is causing. Universal needs a movie like Jurassic World Dominion to perform as well as it possibly can next year to start to offset the losses they're accruing now. This is a game of chicken Universal has no chance of winning.

VOD home viewing is not going anywhere - technology and delivery options are undergoing dramatic changes and theatres are going to have to adapt to this fact. Not every movie produced by whatever studio needs to go to theatre - VOD is the best option. Sure, the blockbusters are best experienced in theatres and it appears increasingly clear this will be the type of movie having an exclusive theatrical window.

Universal (& any other studio doing this) will lose SO MUCH money skipping theaters for three reasons: 1)Half the profits they made were from the 1st run in the theaters. Ppl see it there THEN buy the Blurays/digitals again! 2)Crafty people will stream it day one, record it with hitech software and distribute it around the 'net! 3)Personally, i NEED to see an epic movie with tens of strangers, all of us cheering for the good parts!

Great info. I hate people who saying movie theater are being greedy little brats. They charge out the ass for snacks and blah blah blah. I explain to them Movie theater profit margins are extremely low and they make money from snacks. Not everything could be released on Netflix’s, amazon etc. Studio makes WAY more stupid money in theater rather than straight to streaming.

@@jeromemaida4933 😂😂😉 You haven't watched this channel for long have you. Endgame and every other billion dollar movie recently, would not have made that moullah without cinemas. Streaming can only give you that intake if you DRAMATICALLY increase the cost and close the window of ownership. You would have to force people to rent for tiny periods so that they re-rent soon. And let's face that doesn't work unless you have an monopoly. Everyone so excited for formats like this must remember the studios have to make the MONEY from somewhere. You really prefer all your choices to be taken away for an instantaneous fix?

Why don't the studios pay for a movie coupon they can take to the theater if they buy a vod. The studio can just price the coupon into the vod.

Things look good on paper, but never works out in reality. As a movie consumer, I have legit questions regarding this new desired change. How much is the movie when streamed? Can I own the movie? If not, why? Why would I rent a movie for $20 and when it is released on DVD/blue-ray and I want to own the movie I have to purchase it all over again? Well even if it was on KZfaq to own forever, why I would spend more? Movies on KZfaq vary so $4.99+. Okay so now I spent $25-$30 on a movie?? But if the family only has to spend one time fee and not per person, how will the studio make enough money in return when $300 million is a budget? I would think the studio is going to charge us the consumer to make up for any loss due to streaming as the option or only option. Also, to release movies in theater and stream, well depending on the movie it differs for all, some may not even care to see it in theater but stream so is it financially worth it to the studio? I think people would really pick and choose and be more selective and I would reserve certain movies for the theater. But if streaming costs more than a theater then I won’t stream. Again I am one person not billions of people so I am very curious. Just thinking out loud cuz I literally have no one else to talk to.

i think you said it best....some people dont realize that the studios need to recoup all that money back on these billion dollar blockbusters like fast 9 while trying to make a profit on them and thats where the people from home come in. They are going to charge you high ticket prices from your couch so do the math......9$ a ticket for a family of 5 is over 40$......so wake up and look at the bigger picture people

I hate to sound mean, but I’m on universal side in this. I get the theaters want to make money but have you seen those prices? Honestly it’s a better experience just to pay the $20 at home and watch the movie. This way you can avoid all the noisy people and expensive. Now I do think that some movie should be seen in theaters, big budget action packed movies should be in theaters while some movies can just be bought at home. I just don’t get why we can’t have both and let the people decide?

I hear you bro. But you do realize the movie theaters and the movie studios are fighting about MONEY right? It's so interesting to see so many film fans think it's about their comfort and convenience. If the studios are not making their billions from the theaters where do you think they'll demand that money from? VOD costs will skyrocket. It all works better when there are different streams of income - block and dam one of those streams? The real wars begin, choice for customers go out the window and costs for customers increase dramatically.

People can side with Universal all they want, but when there is a movie that you really wanted to see on the big screen with massive sound and the perfect dark environment, don’t complain if Universal wins this war and every movie studio follows the PVOD route and run every theater out of business. I have few issues with movie theaters. Of course the main issue is the price of tickets, and price of beverages and snacks. But sometimes a certain film deserves your money to see it on the big screen and if they go away for good, I will really miss that experience. Just be careful what you wish for.
