I grew up during the time when Phil Collins was only known as the drummer and backing vocalist in my favourite band. When Peter Gabriel left Genesis, and Phil stepped up as lead singer my friends and I were all rooting for him, (and the band), to continue with what I still think of as ground-breaking work. How anyone could take offence at one of the best drummers, singers, brilliant arranger/contributor, talented song writer and all-round good guy, is beyond me.

Phil has been a musical hero of mine for most of my life. The scope of his work and talent is astonishing, balanced by his sincerity and genuine joy in performing and collaborating with others. I always appreciated how he often identifies himself as a drummer first (even in this clip here). I was blown away by the power of his drumming with Brand X; projects like that and his big band work were fascinating - he accomplished so much more as a creative force than the box he was placed in by the success of his mainstream work. Phil Collins is a musical powerhouse across all genres. All those that hate him are not music lovers. They are just small minded clan fans of a progressive rock group who felt betrayed when Phil Collins left to focus on pop rock. They believe he was responsible for Genesis focussing on pop rock. The fact is Phil Collins has an amazing voice and when writing for an amazing voice, you tend to write tunes that show off that voice. The other bandmembers just wrote what made him sound good. That's not his fault. For me Phil Collins earned his prog rock cred with the work he did on Steve Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte. The prog drumming is superb and he made Star of Syrius shine. The haters are fools. Music is a lot larger than their small minds.

I don't hate you Phil. I used to be a stagehand working for a company based in Lake Helen, FL... In 1993 *EDIT: 1997 it turns out* ...I drove from my home in Daytona down to Lakeland to work with your crew for a week as they set up and tore down different stage configurations preparing for your upcoming tour, which was kicking off in Lakeland. When, I got there, early, I walked into the auditorium to find the lights dimmed, and you and your band apparently doing a full dress rehearsal. You were mid-song doing "Take Me Home" and I was the only other person in the room as far as I could tell. I didn't want to disrupt anything, so I just carefully slipped about halfway down the aisle and quietly tried to take a seat in the dark. The stage was circular and you all were playing facing away to the side of me. But you must have spotted me, and as I sat down, you motioned the band, and without missing a beat, all moved in my direction and continued to play directly to me as the only member of the audience. It blew my mind! One of the biggest acts in the world, and I got a personal concert! At some point, either I slipped back out to leave you to practice in peace, or the rehearsal ended, but I tried to signal my gratitude as I left. I never forgot that day. I walked in nervous and feeling like nobody special, and walked out feeling like a king. If you ever read this, Thank you for that! Worked with your crew for the next week and continued on with you guys to do shows in Tampa and Orlando. One of the best gigs I ever worked on. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You guys were wonderful professionals and wonderful people! Want to add for context, that I ended up specifically working with your drum tech and helped set up your kit for the tour opening show *EDIT AGAIN SORRY: We did set up in Lakeland but the opening show was in Tampa. Apologies* (and I think, for all the central Florida dates that followed). So if you had any trouble with your drums on those dates, I take full responsibility, because your drum tech was phenomenal. I learned TONS from all your crew, and I was NOT an unknowledgeable or inexperienced stagehand at that time. Much love to you and your loved ones, Sir!

Phil was massive in the 80's, when the 90's kicked in, things changed, people were looking for something new, but Phil was still churning out the massive tunes, they just didn't sit well with the likes of The Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses. People in the UK like to move on to the next thing, other countries for some reason seem to be more forgiving. There weren't many acts from the 80's that managed to cling on to popularity into the 90's. It's a funny old thing, music is like fashion

Back then, we only had so many things to complain about! No one I knew ever "hated" Phil. Music changed and it became a bit tame as music took on a harder edge. Luckily the internet gives us the opportunity now, to learn about what was really happening in the studio in those crossover years after the original Genesis faded out. As it turns out, Phil (and Peter Gabriel "don't play the cymbals") had a pretty major impact on the pop music that was being made in the 80's. Much respect.

I have but it was also from folks that had clearly never listened to him, which they admitted when asked. Not everybody loves him, which is fine as that's how taste works but portions of the press had it in for him, calling him bland, boring and so on. Unfortunately some folks let the press decide their opinion for them.

I love this dude and have done for many years. Genesis saved me from a shitty teenage time and through Phil's drumming I was introduced to jazz with his ferociously funky drumming in Brand X. I saw Genesis many times back in the day and Phil solo on his very first solo tour at what was then the Hammersmith Odeon - in the nosebleed seats! Another concert he pushed security guards out the way outside the Royal Albert Hall to walk to me and my then girlfriend to say hello and sign my tour jacket! I was speechless, gob smacked. Lovely fella, truly. I was smitten! So this you may feel this is all leading to something? It is. As an audience loving gent and a consummate pro I didn't understand why he made what seemed little or no effort to get his voice back to something like it used to be in the early days, on Genesis' final tour. I understand why he couldn't drum so have no questions there, but surely efforts could have been made to better the voice through voice work and training. It just seemed like he didn't care which made me rather sad and confused.

People should never underestermate how words can hurt people so much. He obviously takes things very hard.'He's rich and famous i hear you say'....but all that is irrelevant.

Countless number of Phil's live performances.....especially prior to his top 40 mega-success, were sheer masterpieces. Maybe peerless. I have a nice collection of live performances of The Cage that still blow my mind these many decades later. 3 Sides Live should be in every rock fan's collection. There's a short-list of geniuses that get distilled to their lowest common denominator even though their voluminous cannons prove otherwise. It's a shame. It also happened to Dylan, Joni, Van Morrison, Neil Young, and so many others.

Phil is a true talent has proved it many times. He is one of the best drummers I have heard, and he put together an amazing band. I don't know when this interview was recorded, and we should see his musical history as it is, not just judge him on any other grounds.

I think that Phil really worried and maybe he still does about this stuff more than anyone should. He really hates criticism. He should try to accept that "Haters are gonna Hate" and just get on with his life. Probably good advice for anyone in public life.

I had no idea people hated Phil Collins. He is awesome, incredible songs and seems like a nice bloke, shame if he is affected by it.

Phil's highlights: Inspired me loads when I played drums in the 70s-90's. Drums with Brand X + the Genesis stuff is deceptively complex but "fits" like a glove. Very musical drummer. Great technique. Vocally, amazing with a fine register. Very accurate live. All his solo work ballads are melodically pleasing. Prefer them to the faster stuff tbh but I am a sucker for ballads with the wooshy changes lol. ************** I guess as you become vulnerable, the vultures will have their way!

Very interesting to hear what Phil said about people hating him. Im 59 years old and I have never heard anyone in person or online talk about hating him. I would have loved to hear him have another hit.

Small clarification; When Phil said there's only three people who have sold a million albums as a solo artist AND as a member of a band, he meant a HUNDRED million in each category.
