Absolutely agree. I had the right gear 40 years ago but instead of learning to use it, I thought the reason I couldn't make the sounds I wanted was the gear, not me. So began the crazy spending spree in search of 'tone', when all the time it was right here all along...

Thank you John, wise words indeed. I spent a small fortune buying aspirational premium guitars that I played infrequently over 30 years. Then cut back to one acoustic, focused on my style, loving that guitar and playing every single day. My best 7 years. Now I have two for home and a beater to take everywhere else. Never happier

Rick Beato’s interview with Nuno Bettencourt was inspiring for me, especially the point when Nuno said he didn’t want anything between his guitar and the amp except his Rat pedal. The best players always had the most simplest rigs.

I'm right there with you, man. I whittled all of my guitar collection down to an early 2000's Squier SE with a capacitor upgrade and a 1968 Epiphone FT-130 SB. Paired with my 1977 Peavey Pacer and my laptop, I'm sorted. Although I must admit parting with all of my premier instruments wasn't easy. The Law of Diminishing Returns is actually a thing.

One thing I love about your playing is you always sound like you, even if you play an Epi Lazarus, then switch to one of your K-Lines. That's a testament to you finding your sound and not letting gear get in the way of it--a mark of all great players. I come to your channel exactly because you don't fall prey to the allure of the latest KZfaq gear drop. Your comments on gear buying are also great anti-flatulents when I feel GASsy.

Over the years I have bought different equipment because the way they look, feel - play and sound. On live performance, most of the time doesn’t matter much but on recording in the studio it does matter! I don’t consider myself to have a lot! **[Takamine nylon 1, Martin steel 1, Epiphone J.Pass 1, Fender Strat 2, Fender Tele 2,PRS 2, Gibson 6_4 LPs + 2 Semi Hollow ]** ***[ Amps: Fender 3, Boogie 3, Soldano 1, Supro 1 ]***. But still I have to worry mostly about 3 issues: *1) Store & protect ( humidity & temperature). *2) Usage because if you don’t use them they deteriorate with time even if they are stored well, this is particularly important on the electric circuits specially with hollow & semi hollow guitars (more difficult to repair) & also tube amps. *3) Maintenance __strings,body & electronics, neck, fretboard, frets, repairs, adjustments and tuneup - set up. And all that most be constantly! 🎸🎶🎶🤘🏼✌🏼🖖🏼

The Good about GAS noone bothers to mention. You dont lose your money. You get it back and sometimes at a profit. To me it is a healthy interest compared to all the ugly addictions that are just money holes and destruction of life. I rather have someone have GAS than pee'ing everything out twice a week at the bar or worse habits. GAS is generally a win-win situation, IF you keep a level head and dont buy above resell value or above your means. I see it as a healthy win-win, You dont lose money, learn a lot, and can even make money over time.

Great, thought-provoking video. Reflecting on the last few years I've bought and sold a lot of gear (almost all second hand, which helps keep my overall outlay low as you mentioned) but my playing and creativity has not improved. I often cite my day job and family commitments as reasons for this but I also think it's a lot easier to scroll the eBay listings than it is to just pick up and play when I'm low on time or energy. I might need to go cold turkey for a while.

When I was in my teens and early 20's, I dreamed about boutique gear. Later - in my 40's I indulged all of those gear-fantasies. At one point, I had a 20ft wall stacked 2 deep with amps. I proudly hauled ridiculous 'look-at-me' overkill rigs to gigs - and ultimately, few could hear a difference in the mix. I sold most of it - probably $50k worth. Switched to modelers then - when I stopped gigging - to plugins. I'd always ask guitar friends what they thought and the response was always "It sounds like you". The beauty of getting to the 'other side' of indulging in the dream gear is the realization that 9 times out of 10, the anticipation of 'getting' the gear is much greater than actually owning it. Now I stay busy with Neural MKII2C+ and MixWave Creamer (thanks to John's demos). I did give in to GAS last week and bought a PRS SE DGT (again, thanks to John's demo) - but I now own less than 10% of what I used to - and I'm completely happy.

My favorite video from you lately. You just saved me money on a new modeling amp. I also appreciate the line from you, “do l want to have this much money invested in one guitar”. I have ALWAYS customized my guitars. I have parts built my last 3 guitar acquisitions and they are favorites. Guitarist tend to like variety. I’ve never known a guitarist that just had one guitar. The parts guitar build actually appeals to me. I build it over a period of time. Select choice parts and l have been successful so far. Yes, l have completed a build and not be satisfied with a humbucker and l trade it out. I have traded out different tremolos. But it’s like when it’s right l leave it alone.

You hit the nail on the head about when gear is the realms of your disposable income. The threshold for trying something out is low and I've definitley been bitten by the GAS bug. It can lead to something great, but be careful you're not just buying another tube screamer clone! I am guilty of giving myself an inspirational "hit" by buying something when I feel I'm out of ideas. But recently I've been doing some modding and even partscaster builds which has been really enlightening. It gives you something to work on and customise to how you like things and can be part of the journey in finding what's best for what you want to do, without paying thousands trying out variations of the same gear.

The way I see it is ,a carpenter for example wouldn’t go and buy a collection of hammers and power tools of different makes . I am very guilty of buying loads of gear though,but nowadays I just use what I have ,and I’m happy with that .

That is a lovely strat to behold John, the fact it has scrapes scratches & does not look like a Sweetwater ad photo is delightful, proving this instrument has great utility & suited a player who bloody well played it properly & was obviously a good instrument to a far greater degree than any shiny new instrument. You are wise & honest a communicator translating some difficult to comprehend guitar / music topics in a language anybody can understand, without 'dumbing it down' to appease a few, this isn't easy to do - I've played for 4 decades but I end up 'mansplaining' to younger players who look daggers at me! Music tuition is not my bag I either am far too complicated or almost condescendingly sarky. I suck at tutoring & I know it cos; My last effort ended with my apprentice saying : 'Man, you can play guitar like the f*ck?, but really man, you couldn't save your life teachn if you had to.. mate, you can't teach for sh*t, sorry.' so this endeth my tutoring... my relief was palpable, 'Don't freak bra, I've got Marty still, man! 24/7'. My delight at this ostentatious enthusiasm was seen in a absolutely manic grimace of joy, it made my day.🤘Great channel btw JC, I have a pretty fussy diet & you make the cut np's. Muso's gotta know their limitations.

Re : amps .. glad you mentioned it. They really do all sound similar. It doesn’t matter what you play it still sounds like you ! Ive seen many pros just use small cube amps back in the day and mic’ing it if it was needed… leaving their mess boogies at home. It’s all so ridiculous. The whole IR industry is such a scam.

Recently another channel had a video asking "what's next" in your guitar gear journey? I'm very happy to say, there is nothing next. I made up my mind straight away, that I'd set my sights on a few classic styled guitars, and once I found them, I'd stop the madness. I'm pretty content right now with 5 guitars and 1 bass. I've recently thinned the heard, and feel much better having only the cream of the crop left. 2 LP's, 2 T's and a HSS S type that matches the bass. Done.

I still enjoy having lots of varied kit. Yes I have too much. But. Changing guitars and switching amps can help keep creative juices flowing and mix it up. And I like guitars aesthetically for their own beauty and purpose. They satisfying things to own.

I went through almost the entire Helix ecosystem (Pod GO, Helix LT, Helix Floor) before realizing the workflow and default settings on my trusty HD500X worked better. Also, the HX amps sounded much more “raw”, which ACTUALLY meant they required more processing than the HD500X.

Sometime you buy gear to experiment and chase that elusive guitar tone. On amps, I had many at some point and finally decided that two was enough. You almost end up with options paralysis with so many options.

Definitely have spent around 70-80k. I don’t even play professionally anymore and still tend to spend about 6k a year on new guitars and things. Problem is I have realized I tend to do this in times of stress, writers block, or when I’m too busy to play (but not too busy to surf reverb and Craigslist). I’m working to limit myself this year and concentrate on getting to the next level and get back to session gigs. But it’s a work in progress. Thanks JC!

It's the journey though isn't it. Having the experiences, good and bad. That gets you to where you are. Of course there are psychological vectors as well and each individual is slightly different from the next. As a jobbing bassist, I went for decades with two or three basses, one acoustic - Eko, and one thin stringer - Strat. As a curmudgeonly old bass player, sound engineer (retired), I now sport some nine basses and seventeen thin stringers ... Why? I wanted to know what they were like.

I'm the same about having a baby, he's 1 y.o and 5 months. To have time to play guitar is so precious, because I still have to work all day. By the time I'm back from work, I'll spend the time playing with my son. Then, usually I don't have the mood to play or practice anymore. So, to have more time to play sometimes it's batter than to have more guitar. I think that's makes the diffrence for pro and a hobbies 😅

I definately play differently on different guitars. Strat for shredding, Ibanez semi for jazzy stuff, my tele for a bit of twangyness and my LP for blues rock. Depending on my mood I'll pick up a different guitar. And then when I haven't played one of them for a few weeks it's nice and refreshing to pick up that respective guitar again. My amps in a wet dry set-up have not had their controls tweeked for about two years! It's just plug in and play. I'm basically down to max three to four pedals. If I had to choose it would be a classic overdrive only with some reverb thrown in. The best sound device I have found is the volume control on my guitar..

Future John is spot on about not necessarily bonding with expensive guitars. It's been the same for me mate. I've bonded more with my Pacifica than my SLS Schecter and so on...for some reason a bargain leads me to a bond and I have no idea why. I've got guitars worth thousands but the truth is the truth.

What I've learned: Buy a good playing and sounding guitar for reasonable money. A Larry Carlton or EART. Buy a Tonex pedal and a modeling amp. You are set for the first 5-8 years of guitar playing.

I really think it comes down to a willingness to just fiddle with the knobs and sliders. I am constantly amazed at the different kinds of sounds I can get out of my humble Squier through an EQ pedal and an 8” Jensen speaker in a budget tube amp all because I’m constantly messing with it all. These days $1000 buys a very good guitar, a very good amp, and a box of effects pedals to get any sound you want. It can even get cheaper than that with modeling amps and interfaces, but I’m a hobbyist so I need my pedals because I think they’re fun.

I bought a Boss GX100 6 months ago. I am very impressed with the tone, feel and flexibility of this overlooked pedal. I want to buy a Fractal fm9 because.. it's supposed to be the best or something. I think I really don't need it.

I've been playing around with NAM and found myself using an Orange Rockerverb capture that inspired me to play a surf punk song I'd recorded back in the 90's. It nailed the sound of my JCM900 with stacked ODs that I used then(and still have) 🙄 maybe I neeeed that amp..... Our brains have definitely been rewired to 'want' shiny new stuff.

If you pardon me, I'll weigh in. The things that are frequently confused are whether a certain piece of gear will make you sound better in given circumstances vs whether it is going to make you a better musician. Once you have it sorted out, your soul becomes peaceful. That being said it is always good to consider what your hopes are while pursuing a certain purchase. If you hope to grow as a musician buying stuff you are on a route to becoming a bitter and puny would-be. Practice, compose and then consider tools that will help you with tone; not the other way round. Just saying.

I’ve been playing guitar for quite some time, and no matter what I play through, I always sound like me. I cut my teeth on the Tascam tape multitrack and still use my original POD 2.0. Did you know Howie Simon tours with the POD2.0 and its floorboard? I agree with everything you say.

I started out with a strat. I then got an Epiphone Les Paul which I hated. I've had an Epi (Goth) G400, many different Ibanez's from floating trem RG's to hardtail SZ's, a couple PRS', and loads of obscure brands in between. For years I just fell out of love with playing. One day, I thought "I'll pick up a strat again" and it felt like home. I spent all that money to realise I don't find anything as playable as a Strat style guitar.

Not John, but I owned a Mooer GE200 and was able to coax some very respectable tones from it. Less options than a Fractal or Stomp, but the tones are in there if you look for them.

When I started playing I decided to buy something inexpensive with the expectation that I was going to want to try something else as I figured out what I do and don’t like and what I’ve learned is that I feel absolutely no need to buy anything more expensive than a Squier. I’m not a working musician though, so maybe I’d feel differently if I were.

I sometimes am tempted by he concept of something that may not actually work out in the long run. For instance I have for years considered adding a MIDI a rig like an SY1000 but just not convinced that it would ultimately work well for me.

Mark Knopfler understands how important it is to use different guitars during a gig or on an album. Cause it changes the sound between songs. Some artists use the same guitar all night and the risk is that every song starts to sound the same when the compositions are not very different. Besides one guitar fits a song better that another.

Yeah but I don’t think that’s because Mark’s tech can’t make the same guitar do whatever each song requires of it so much as it’s waaaay more convenient to just swap in a guitar that’s tuned and set up for the specific song it’s being played for. Because nobody has the time for someone to change to an alternate tuning on a guitar with a floating tremolo at a show.

I 've just realised i've bought too much gear over the last few years... It's ok to have few instruments as long u play 'em all otherwise get rid unless there is a trade involved or speculation ... how many bits of gear do we really need? I suppose it 's to do with the level u could be at as far as pro-semi pro - enthusiast etc etc ... I came to the conclusion sometimes u need to experiment and try different instrument to find the one that speaks to you ... the sound is always in our fingers and that is the n1 rule ...then everything else comes after it .... What speaks to me isn't necessarily how expensive or cheap an bit of gear is ... Since i started playing Sire basses i realised i didn't need anything else so i got rid of all other basses i couldn't bond with it ... most of it is in our heads.... then comes gas n ego n search of a tone that doesn't exist ahahaha... For sure different instruments make me play differently like colour on a canvas ... I think with less than 4-5 instruments u can cover the full spectrum although is nice if u can spend and collect ... i'm sure even a sheik who can have as many wives as he wishes for sure will only prefer a few ahaha... too tiring for me ahhhhh

I agree gas isn’t as useful as it seems. That Vibroverb though, come on now that thing is the balls. All you need is that and a strat and your gear hunt is over 😂

It’s pretty easy to go beyond the point that buying new gear adds to your experience. Unless you get real lucky what you start with won’t be what suits you best so it’s not unreasonable to try out more guitars, pedals, amps/modellers etc. But then when you do go through that and find what really suits you you can fall into a pattern of trying to repeat the experience. Typical addict behaviour. So what do you guys think of Squier coming out with a 12 string Jazzmaster??

I think it is different if you primarily are a youtuber; it is ideal for reviewing gear that takes your fancy and it can a be a resource for the future. But to have any thing to demo for video is a disconnect, stuff sent to you and the like. Gear you are passionate about is much better content

I hate how guitar playing has become such a market now adays.... it really does not take much to play. a few good guitars for a change of pace one or two great amps and a few pedals will get you playing out!

A €500 guitar will do in most cases as a €300-500 modelling amp (Katana, GTX) or a €300-1000 tube amp (Marshall,Fender,Vox). Once figured what fx are usefull (compressor eq) and you like (thought was a flanger distortion guy but turns out to be an overdrive phaser guy) buy maybe some pedals (messy but one knob per parameter) or an ergonomically good multi (ME-80 etc). If you can't get close to what you have in mind then buy a car 😂

This is a huge reason I think gear demos can be pretty misleading. Mostly it’s some guitar bro who plays the same riffs on it and says “wow it’s a guitar” and they never truly bond with the guitar or play any real music on it

I completely disagree. I have expensive amps and in live situations its worlds apart. Im quite happy with my stomp, but its two different things.

Modellers are great! I use an Hx stomp, headphones and practice for hours now! I think the most important thing with something like an Hx stomp or any digital amp/effect modeller is that you starting to know what you like and what you don’t like. I have an AC 30 preset on my stomp and when I played one in a guitar shop a while back i knew that was the sound I liked.

I agree and disagree. Yes, gear is not the ultimate solution to musical creativity.. but you can only do this talk and reach this conclusion because you tried things - guitars, pedals, etc. If we don't go on our journey of exploration of sounds and guitars we will never know. Sometimes we find out we already had all we needed, other times we find it on instrument/pedal number 100. Yes, we shouldn't let gear get in the way (GAS can become a terrible addiction..), but at the same time we should explore the soundscape to see what fits us. And this may change as we learn more about oneself and what we like, or as we learn more about music, our tastes also change, and so the gear we may need to sound like we want. And especially if we are recording we need variety and pallets of sounds to chose from too.

Greetings John Personally.. I've been through a wide range of gear, It didn't take long for me, that its best to keep it simple.. Less to keep up with, and easier to work with..imo

In terms of how many guitars and amps you need, I don't think there's a "one size fits all". Many players want to achieve "their sound" so they end up on one guitar and one amp and say "that's my sound." That's fine. But some players want a wide variety of sounds, and if you want a cool funky Strat sound, you won't get it from a Les Paul (that's just one example). Tim Pierce couldn't do his job as effectively if he stuck to one guitar. Most guitar players don't play the wide variety of tones that Tim does. Some do, though. Interesting topic.
