Leading figures in Scottish traditional music, brothers Phil and Johnny Cunningham were founders of the seminal 1970s band Silly Wizard and the 1980s supergroup Relativity. Born in Portobello near Edinburgh, Phil is a legendary accordionist, Johnny an extraordinary fiddler. Both also gained renowned as composers and entertainers-banter and storytelling being as central to their performances as their astounding playing. They hadn't performed together in eleven years before reuniting for this concert of songs and stories at the 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Sadly, Johnny passed away unexpectedly a few months after the Festival.

What a pleasure to see these giants playing together. The music these two brothers created over many years is a treasure. I'm so glad the Smithsonian recorded them and posted it here on KZfaq.

Yes, he played in the Green Briar the odd time at the Larry Reynolds session. It was interesting that with all the musicians present, they would defer to Johnny at some point to play a tune. Lovely fiddle player.

Two excellent musicians. Saw then both at the Iron horse, Northampton, MA in the mid 90's. Johnny did a solo concert and at a different time Phil and Aly Bain played there together. Two great evenings, without a doubt.

Got to sit with Johnny for a brief time in the Euclid Avenue Yacht Club, after he had done a show at Variety Playhouse at Little Five Points in Decatur, GA. Mel Fisler was there, too, and she suggested we buy Johnny a beer after the show. And Johnny was willing, and so we did just that!

Yes, its odd. Maybe it's a MIDI stuff that trigs some MIDI expander, I don't know ... Or is it a Roland MIDI accordion ?

Phil had one of the first MIDI equipped accordions in Scotland. Certainly the first one on the Isle of Skye when he was living there in the 1980s. @@edelahaye

For many years, Phil has been playing with traditional reeds on the melody side and MIDI on the bass side.

I love Celtic music, as do many Jews! We have had to deal with anti-semitism right up till the moment and i'm never getting on an ill-repaired airplane, which I am sure most of them are.
