I'm going to have to call BS on the gay aspect of being banned. Charles Nelson Reilly was very gay and Johnny didn't care. Johnny had him on more than any other guest.

Wow, this is strange. The queen of gay camp humor, Bette Midler who is royalty to many gay men, seemed to love Johnny Carson. In fact, on his last show she sang his favorite song to him in an emotional farewell. Bette Midler is a first class act and if Johnny Carson was a vicious homophobe she would not have had anything to do with him.

One of the funniest guests to ever be on the Carson show was Don Rickles, and if any of this bullshit is true, Rickles would have brought this out in the light and would have Denounced this crap. People today just dont understand the comedy that came out of Carson and Rickles. They both had that sarcastic type of comedy. Just look up Don Rickles on the Carson show. Rivers was just a nasty talking lady.

Johnny's mother lived in Phoenix. I worked with one of the nurses that cared for her over the years. She said the mother was a beast and when Johnny would visit, at her demand, he would cower to her. She ridiculed him in front of the help including the nurse. She said this when on for years. No wonder he hated his mother.

Carson was Number 1 in my book. He could make me laugh with just that stupid look he could have.

The years I watched Johnny Carson usually after getting off work, I never heard Johnny Carson talking bad on.gay people nor did I hear him say racial comments. You should speak well of someone that already passed and how Johnny Carson opened doors for others with talk shows...

I highly doubt that Johnny Carson was an angel. However, is / was anyone in Hollywood? He lived most of his life in a spotlight, and I would assume (I know the consequences of saying this word) that this is not an easy feat. All that I can say is that he entertained millions of people, at a time when the world was allowed to have a sense of humor without getting bent out of shape. I, for one miss those days. He had several prominently outright gay / lesbian guests on his show. Perhaps the beefs he had with these people stemmed from issues behind the scenes, and we won’t know the truth as the man is deceased. He gave hundreds of people the stairway to stardom. If others weren’t lucky enough to have an opportunity to have a guest appearance, perhaps it had to do with the writers, studio executives, or producers? It was a show meant to entertain, and bottom line make money just like every other show on television. Would I like to have had his money, absolutely, would I like to be hounded every moment of my life by the paparazzi NO!! His life was one in a zillion. I enjoyed the opportunities that I had to watch him in action. Some shows were better than others. I watched the final show knowing that history was ending. My friends couldn’t understand my desire to watch, nor sadness for the end of an era. I wasn’t even born when he took the helm, but I watched when he bowed out gracefully. So the “banned gay actors” consist of one person-Mario Cantone, who wasn't banned by Carson, he was canceled by Carson’s talent coordinator, whose first name Cantone can’t remember. Then we learn that some people felt Carson wasn’t nice; Wayne Newton threatened to kick his ass; Carson had a drinking problem; he was also a philanthropist; he smoked too much and died of emphysema. So… what was this about again?

I don’t believe Carson was homophobic. He could be mean sometimes. That’s documented. And he didn’t like certain people, but it had nothing to do with anyone being gay. He was quick witted and his show was very funny.

Loved him but that didn’t make him a nice guy. He was a Magician, Comedian, Drummer. Most people who are geniuses at what they do are usually human on the other end. Interesting comment from a guy who became a Vegas curiosity venue benefiting for shows like Carson, having been told when he and his brother were a duo singing act ..... "You - just you are offered the contract..... not your brother " ...... Wayne Newton TOOK THE OFFER - dispatching his own brother ..... for a break in show business. Carson was a driven man .... made his own way, created a fortune in mutual benefit to He & the Network ..... true he was a stickler and cold businessman .... but, many are, most do well to be clear and consistent when dealing with those that determine the quality and standards of the show SO LONG AND TIRELESSLY worked for. There is a lot about all of this that really seems and smells off. Before things went pear shaped between Carson & Rivers, he (Carson) knew that Rivers had a massive gay following. I can understand what caused the rift professionally between them as he would've seen her as a threat or the network and producers told to many tales out of school flipping Carson into paranoid mode. Let's look at what could've played out if Carson dropped in ratings to Joan and faced cancellation, not only would Carson be out of a job, so would his Producer, the network would've lost millions in advertising dollars by advertisers, when there is so much at risk the network and Producer firstly and foremost would've been out to save their best interests, themselves to them Carson would've been collateral damage and who better to do their dirty work for them to avoid a publicity scandal? Carson. And what's to say that some of the advertisers or sponsors were homophobic and threatened to pull their money and spend it elsewhere if the gay overtones or openly gay guests weren't removed from the equation? Also to the best of my knowledge I have never heard Joan say that he was a homophobe in any interviews that I've seen when asked about the rift between her and Carson. This now brings me to Bette Midler who has one of the hugest if not hugest gay followings in the world. Bette was still working the Continental Baths at the time of her first appearance on Carson and this topic was touched on briefly in conversation between the two. Like Joan, Bette also made numerous appearances on the show throughout her carer and was also the very last guest and gave the show it's very last musical performance. Homophobes tend to steer clear of people who have large gay followings such as Joan & Bette and tend not to socialise with people who have gay friends even in a non show business seance because homophobes don't like being confronted about their phobia (unless the person is an uneducated redneck who's thoughts by pass his or hers brain and comes out of their mouths, hence the term "Talking shit.") I’m so sick of getting turned off entertainers. If they break laws convict them. If they’re dead, let them rest in peace. Who had a talk show without Liberace or Charles Nelson Reilly. Hollywood knew about Rick Hudson. We didn’t. I’m sure his views changed over the span in which he lived.

I think Johnny also believed in the dictum of "if you're gay, please don't tell me and don't act gay on my show!" Liberace was on the show many times and there was the gift of the piano. I think, first Liberace had power in friends and public stature. Also, Liberace was hiding the fact the he was gay. Of course, everyone knew he was gay so he wasn't fooling anyone but himself. He really thought he was pulling off the demeanor of a straight man. So, in his advancing years he finally made public that he was gay and was genuinely surprised at the public's lack of reaction or curiosity.

Newton's narrative here is pretty silly. I say this as a senior, and I don't mean high school. The rumors about Wayne began long, long before the kerfuffle with Carson. He was plump, curvy-hipped, and strawberry blond when he was a pre-teen with a high voice. Also, his manner was cutesy. I would see him on variety shows like Jackie Gleason. He got his biggest TV exposure, when older, on The Lucy Show, and it's still up on YT and it's easy to see why kids at my junior high called him names, but I admit I didn't know what they meant. Older still, he became big in Las Vegas, and Johnny was very competitive. I did see Johnny make fun of Wayne occasionally and by that time I knew exactly what he meant. I highly doubt Wayne, or anybody, could just walk in on Johnny Carson, unannounced, past NBC security, and tell his producer to amscray. Wayne was larger, but Carson was a military veteran who had taken up boxing there. Carson could more than hold his own against Newton, who, I assure you, made this confrontation up. It was around that time Wayne got married to a pretty Hawaiian airline stewardess, maybe as a beard, but she didn't know it. She divorced him, claiming physical abuse. Later still, Newton reinvented himself as we know him now: bulked up, jet black hair, debonair mustache.

I worked in a Las Vegas Hotel where Johnny appeared. He wanted a photographer to come up to a VIP suite to take pictures. He impressed on the photo lab manager that he didn't want anyone that would be fawning over him. The manager sent me because he knew I would act professional. I said hello to Johnny and then focused my attention on the VIP guest. Well, Johnny couldn't stand it! He started flirting with me and I just kept a professional demeanor and spoke directly to the guest. It was very amusing how his ego got in the way. I have another much more damning incident to recap.

Untrue, my uncle worked on the show in the late 80s and Mario Cantone was cancelled because a few of his jokes had sexual innuendos. This is why Mario was not booked.

A very interesting and entertaining video, BUT it’s the distracting and obnoxious insertion of the illusion that these old clips are film. Everyone knows that all these video clips are ACTUALLY from video tape and NOT film at all. A very disappointing decision by the producers.
