I can only imagine Ed McMahon watching this show in his hotel room thinking, "My job is over!" That was the funniest interaction between Doc and Johnny. Doc was a natural, and one fine musician.

A big thank you to Carson Productions for making this complete episode available on YT. Seeing Johnny's monologue really provides context and helps explain some of the comments made during the legendary "turkey talk" with Doc Severinson. And I'd completely forgotten about Buddy Rich's hyperspeed version of Count Basie's "You Gotta Try." I own several of the Carson DVD compilations, but seeing these shows in their entirety has been a revelation; by today's standards, the nightly parade of A-level guests is astonishing. (Even the vintage film commercials are highly entertaining - and the audio quality of the programs has exceeded my expectations.) Although the 1979 Trinitron has been replaced by an iPad and headphones, it's been a treat to watch Mr. Carson at evening's end...just as we did "back in the day." Thanks again!

Oh Oh! Tony Randal! No coincidence I have been watching full-episode re-runs of Odd Couple on KZfaq! We are truly products of our generation, just coming up on 49 years old myself. How much has changed since I was 14 years old.

Wow, fantastic show that night! Doc could really keep up with Johnny in the banter. I love how they're not afraid to act like two old friends ribbing each other and joking about their marital problems on national TV. Then we get Tony Randall telling a story about buying condoms, Buddy Rich giving it everything he got on the drums, a hacky 70s comedian, and a serious conversation about a book. Hard to believe you used to be able to get that much entertainment and variety every night... for free!

I agree with Edward who posted below. This was my old habit in the 70's to watch Johnny Carson before going to bed. Maybe even falling asleep while watching it. Can't sleep though with Buddy Rich on. Wow! What an artist. So were all the other guests. REAL artists in their crafts

THANK YOU for posting this awesome show! The Doc segment and Buddy's are my highlights. But you just can't go wrong folks - it's Carson, it's timeless, and it's better than anything on TV these days! Side note: I've been playing drums pro & semi-pro for 28 years and I can tell you...playing on another drummer's kit is usually a challenge, or worse! Ed's overall setup was much higher than Buddy's - but he still killed it like no one else could! Impressive...and inspiring!

A "Serpentine" mini-series, or at least one based on the killer's life, was apparently announced in 2019 for Netflix with the lead already cast. The killer intentionally escaped prison before his sentence was up in order to be resentenced for 10 more years. This was done so that the extradition to another country where he expected to receive the death penalty would expire before he was let out. He lived the high life in France for several years before voluntarily returning to Nepal where he was found by authorities, arrested, given a life sentence and still resides now.
