I was in a busy and noisy bar this night and I suddenly remembered that it was Johnny's last night and told the bartender to turn on the TV . It was the final 10 minutes , and the entire bar stopped whatever they were doing to see his send-off. Jukebox was un-plugged , pool tables went dark , and no one complained . It was a MAJOR show of respect in my mind , for a man who whole heartedly deserved it .

Couldn’t agree more....tremendous statement. Being known by the public used to be reserved only for those who truly could “move the meter” with groundbreaking talent and (more importantly) hard work. Celebrity was reserved only for the most talented and hardest working among us. These days, make a sex tape or post a couple of YouTibe clips and you’re known. Things have definitely changed.

He had such a heartfelt and warm sounding voice. Even as a kid, you were interested in at least convincing your parents to let you stay up for his opening monologue. Like others on here have said, he rarely spoke of current events, never about politics and allowed his guests to shine. There were a few other talk show hosts like Mike Douglas or Dick Cavett who were similar, like your familiar family member that you adored because they had a knack for making you feel so comfortable around them.

Bear in mind too that neither Ford, Carter, Reagan, nor Bush were hell bent on destroying the United States of America domestically and internationally. Unlike the world of today's late night hosts, Johnny Carson's America was not a country in which a small, radical faction of political extremists had usurped power and were carrying out policies pleasing to the Kremlin. Even Nixon-corrupt and criminal though he was-would never have dreamt of selling out the United States to the Soviet Union (Nixon was a Navy veteran, remember). Contemporary American fascism is now being rightly, publicly, and vocally opposed by people of all political persuasions and of all walks of life-including late night television hosts.

I am not American but French and I have lived for a bit over two years in USA in 85, 88 and 89. I learnt a lot about US civilization, politics, social life, etc. through the Jonny Carson's show. Some of his jokes were too difficult to understand for a non native American, but I found his show extremely funny and entertaining. I was quite sad when I learnt he died...

I've just gotten into the French culture and I feel bad about the latest state of the French economy, the Muslim-homeless flood raising crime and how their government has been ruining your nation. ...anyways- Carson WAS hilarious, that's true. Johnny Carson really was 'American' and he knew that. Using his show and his humor as a model to figure us out is not the worst idea, but not the best either. It's great you've been here though. I like the French-Disco Music of Patrick Hernandez, but I know he's not the sole thing France has to offer. Bonne journée!

When Johnny passed away in 2005 I was working as a message board moderator for America Online (yes, it still existed then). One of the few advantages of being an AOL mod, aside from being one of the few telework jobs available back then, is that you were constantly up on the latest news. Which could sometimes have drawbacks, such as the shock of reading that Johnny was gone. He was in his 80s but I had always felt like he would just live forever. I very clearly remember that an AOL user from the UK posted "America, you will not see his like in our lifetimes." Prophetic words as we go into 2023.

His love for people was really obvious the care that he showed his guests. But I loved his monologue stand up, and I loved it the MOST when he would tell a joke that would really fall flat and die and he would try to dig his way out of it. That was when you really saw what he was made of and how he could charm the audience. I still howl with laughter when I see his Art Fern and the mystic visitor from the East Carnac the Magnificent. It is hard to look at all those faces and know that basically they're all gone. How untimely and never late is death? How short is man's time? Where goes all those special people, their gifts and talents, they're smiles, laughs and wisdom? Is there some place where they merge in time or space? This show was always fun to watch, but as I remember all those many years I see change. I see the country we once were. I see the faith we once had. I see civility and manners we seem to have lost. I see great leaders, social examples of humanity and class we now seem bereft of. I can only hope that somewhere, somehow, some shred of all of those who've come and gone is still a force of our hope, our future and has not forgotten us.

Civility has NOT vanished from the USA, nor has hope, examples of humanity, or great leaders...the country we once were still exists! 'Listen' and you can 'hear' it loudly in the comments to this video! The country we once were does NOT exist up and down the entire left coast of the USA or in several eastern cities: NYC, DC, ATL, or MIA, to name a few... however, elsewhere the rabid stench of progressive liberal ideology has NOT taken as firm a hold as the major media reports... There are STILL civil people, non-racist, non-homophobic, non-judgmental, non-politically correct, individuals throughout the USA that DO respect their elders, ARE kind to less fortunate people both actively (donating time) and passively (donating money), AND have TRUE tolerance for other's view's and lifestyles. Today, the progressive liberal ideology people push forward a message of tolerance to everyone except themselves. Disagreement or presenting alternate opinions are met with anger, protest, and even violence! My point is there is a FEW that SHOUT and the major media amplifies their voice - but their voice remains that of a FEW... when the VOICE of those posting their disgust with what media has become on this video IS combined with everyone else's ABSOLUTE disgust with progressive liberal ideology and their arrogant take-over of EVERYTHING...making all things political...then perhaps we can vote them out of office entirely!! Democrats and Republicans. Good-bye.

As a kid, Friday nights (and all through summer) I would watch this show with my dad. We watched this finale together and he said at the end "it will never be the same again." Well, Leno carried the torch wonderfully...then Fallon dropped it along with ALL of late night. Such class vs. such trash today...

Leno was lousy. He screwed Letterman and Conan to keep that gig. Good comedian, terrible talk show host.

Johnny was the only one I watched. After he retired, I tried watching Jay and the rest. They can't hold an ounce of talent that Johnny did. Thanks for all the laughs and memories, Johnny Carson! God's enjoying your humor now.

Johnny Carson was an original and a true legend of late-night -television.A true pioneer and -for thirty years kept us chuckling -and enjoyed his monologues at it-the start of the show.He introd- -uced us to 2400 guests since '62. He was a great host for 30 years. Nobody in late-night today even -comes close.Johnny was hilarious -with the animal segments and he -never missed a beat.R.I.P.Johnny.

I am sad that my teens will never know the excitement I felt when I heard the sound of the Tonight Show band playing their opening number. On one episode, Johnny mentioned that someone from the LA Water Department wrote in and said that there was a big rush of water in the sewer lines right after his monologue; so many people waited until then to run to the bathroom, lol.

The bottom line is regardless if you are on the left, right, middle whatever...this was a damn good country when The Peanut Farmer and The Gipper were in there. I noticed this Country really going to Hell during the late 80's...Godawful heavy Metal and annoying Rap came in. The type of junk that could never be hugely popular even 10 years before and Pauly Shore and Jim carrey annoying jackasses, andBush SR, came in and it was the S&L Scandal,Panama Invasion,Iran and Contra and then Bubba Clinton and Nafta...

@@vernpascal1531 You said it! Horrible so called progress. When a real Time Machine is invented before I die, I will choose the seventies to return to. Great music, some good tv and nicer people. Thank you for your comment ✌

Johnny Carson was the best (The Tonight Show '62 - '92.) So much better and humorous than Jimmy Felon will ever be in my opinion.
