Even jay and David had star power though at least. I watch Carson reruns and the thought of how quickly he could make a career is crazy. Jay tried very hard and was a great guest and stand up. Okay host but then seeing Fallon get something so easily that it felt Nobody was good enough for was annoying. Conan maybe shoulda just sucked up because he woulda become a better host. Seinfeld woulda been good I thought

@@richardharris6058 I would not doubt you. I read his mother was a true child abuser POS human being who destroyed Johnny Carson's childhood. Child abuse is rampant in this country, but it's out of sight, out of mind. In Johnny's defense, he was programmed to be cruel by his mother. Sadly.

I could have watched a LOT more JC, but, I was much younger, and needed my sleep and college study time. Never has there been such a range of characters to sit beside him - - from astronauts to zoologists - - and, even, to sit in his chair, even for just a day. He l launched many careers from a single show, and even ended those of a few. After Carson left the air, I tried to watch late night shows, such as Arsenio, Rivers, Leno, Letterman, and all the wannabes who came afterward on the myriad networks, including daytime talk shows, but, there is no comparison to Carson, because those hosts are all egomaniacs, no matter how warmly they present themselves (Dick Cavett was a second best, but, he always struck me as awkward, never sure what to do next, always at a loss for focus, etc). Now, I settle for the "Best of Carson," hoping that, someday, they release the hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of most of the Tonight Shows that Johnny saw fit to store deep in a salt mine to be preserved for all time; what good are they sitting there?

They have. Carson’s nephew, Jeff Sotzing, was a producer on The Tonight Show for many years, and is now in charge of Carson Entertainment Productions, which owns The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson catalog. They have a You Tube channel that features many clips. DVD sets of entire episodes are available from Amazon, though not nearly all of them. Almost all episodes from 1962-1971 were erased or taped over by NBC.

No one will ever take his place. The pretenders and replacements all failed to match him even a little. And now the world is a different place with too many options and not enough demanded of any talent. Johnny kept it funny, classy, apolitical, witty, unpredictable, simple and clever. It was the place to be past the wee hours. He either introduced and propelled new talent or gathered the finest stars in show business. Johnny was the only true King of Late Night. Nowadays they do an hour. Johnny did an hour and forty-five minutes at the start and 90 minutes for much of his run. Not only was he a great stand up comedian whose opening monologue was anxiously awaited for every day, but he was a terrific interviewer equally at home with children and major stars (by far the best of all the comics who've ever done late night shows dealing with regular people and because his show ran so long he had many more of them on in the early days than other hosts do nowadays). He was the best at what he did and really established the genre despite the fact there were others before him. Everything Dave says is spot on.

There wasn't a dry eye in America when he passed. Even after all these years, he's still missed. He was that good.

It's always sad to me that I didn't recognize the genius that was Johnny Carson until the last 5-6 years of his career. I'd grown up with hearing others talk about The Tonight Show, but being young didn't pay it much mind. It wasn't until many late night study sessions in college that I discovered what so many had been saying for decades. So when he signed off for good in 1992 it really did feel like the end of an era. Things haven't ever been the same since.
