This is the most emotionally powerful music video I have ever witnessed.

I made a delivery to The House of Cash not long before the video was made. I spent several minutes inside waiting for a return package and noticed all the empty displays and dust. On my way back to Nashville I got pretty angry that people were not supporting Johnny enough to even keep a gift shop open. When I saw the video a few months later I heard loud and clear the phrase "you can have my empire of dirt." I shed a tear every time I see the video and my perspective on what success is has become very different. See you in Heaven Johnny!

I remember when this music video was on MTV and VH1 in the mornings. I was in high school at the time and every morning I would switch between MTV and VH1 if there was a song I didn't care for. When this video came on all I though was, "who is this old guy?" as I changed the channel. After about a month I finally gave in and watched it. I had no idea who Johnny Cash was, but as I watched his life go by and listened to the lyrics I was captivated. It was and still is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. The next song came on, I turned off the TV, sat on my bed and cried. Not a bawling cry, but the just sitting there with tears going down my face cry. I had no idea what emotions I was feeling, I was that moved. I ended up missing my bus because I ended up sitting there replaying the video in my head for about 20 minutes.

I am not a fan of Bono but that statement was killer. "Trent Reznor was born to write that song but Johnny Cash was born to sing it"... WOW!

I have watched this video several, several times and each time I end up in tears. The scene where June is looking down on him at the table with that look in her eyes gets me every time. I also notice different things in it every time I watch. He is sitting at that table with all that food and drink, meal time, and normally at meal time you are with family and friends. He is sitting at the table all alone.

Watched the video again, 7 years later, and still cried. Trent and Johnny, same song, totally different meaning. Love NIN, but Johnnys version brings you to your knees. To see him young and strong, then fragile and old, his wife staring in the background like a ghost. His Mom’s portrait on the wall, as he sings everyone leaves in the end. It’s his opus in one song, his final goodbye, his gift to us, before leaving this earth. RIP JC and JCC 🌹

mad props to Trent Reznor for allowing Johnny Cash to sing in his own beautiful version of hurt.Most musicians would have been pricks and critical of someone else using there song but Trent considered a honor.

When the author of a song who gave a very moving performance of the song himself says he was blown away by a cover version you know it's something special I remember when I saw this video for the first time, I was in a room full of men who had just attended a sporting event and we were pretty rowdy when the song came on. When it ended you could have heard a mouse fart - it must have been a very dusty room because everyone was rubbing their eyes.

I don't talk often of my personal Connection to the man, the myth the Legend... But Uncle Johnny's finale recording/video gave me such an unnerving yet deep dive into the true heartache he was carrying around with him from years of mistakes that ended up haunting him. I have no doubt, Aunt June was God's way of bringing him to the light, I just wish it would of happened sooner. The reason I'm speaking out now, is because I'm In a place of great hurt, a place that I can feel inside every single word he says and it feels like it's coming from inside me. Truth is, it is coming from inside of me. Johnny was my great Uncle, and I know deep down my love and admiration for music and it's capability to change lives has come in part from him. He will always be a part of my heart, and our family. My one regret is not getting to know the man that was Cash before he passed when I was younger. Continue to fly high Uncle Johnny, with Christ by your side and no more pain. 💙

I have watched the video of Hurt sung By the immortal Mr Cash many times and every time it has moved me to think of my own life and the twists and turns it has take. In my opinion every young person would benefit for taking the time to watch and digest the powerful message given.

Dude trust me [A NIN fan from the beginning] - the way Cash's version makes you feel is the same way I and several million other NIN fans feel when they hear this song. Yes, Cash's version is excellent and emotion inducing but don't discount the song - it is an amazingly powerful song. NIN's version has helped me through several truly suicidal nights. Give their version a listen [as I am with Cash's] - it's just a powerful song. You can feel the pain in either singers voice so strongly.

Not to take away from the producers (they produced a beautiful, sincere, and moving video), but I think the emotional reaction from viewers was 98% frontloaded in their love for Johnny. Bono was right, Trent was born to write it and Johnny “lived” to sing it. One of my favorites of all time.

I only heard of this song today (I don't know where I've been). I started it up and was listening but doing something else. When I realized it was an actual video of him singing and a retrospective of his life I started it over. Soul-wrenching. When June appears on the stairs watching over him I just lost it. I've never been a Country fan or followed Johnny much but I sure know what an icon he was. To see this incredible swan song touched me so deeply I'll never really find the words to express it. One of the most powerful music videos I have EVER seen.

the first time I saw the hurt video it was about 2 or three years ago when i bought the c.d of Johnny cash american iv and the DVD music video came with the c.d and being a fan of Johnny I was filled with joy to see that a DVD of Johnny cash was included so when I inserted the DVD in the DVD player and saw less then half way i stared crying and ever since then i start to cry when i see the hurt video or any other sad but awesome video of johnny i start to cry

I might get some hate for this, but I saw Trent Reznor perform this song live 5 days ago and it blew my mind, he really gives it all at the stage... His performance is on par with Johnny Cash's, they both really put their souls on performing it.

Tough story. But, it is one of my favorite songs of all time. Especially the Cash version. Every time I hear it, I look for the ground and steady myself. I think that is its intent in both Trent and Cash's imagination whether they knew it or not.

I wish I had heard this song sooner, so I ended up seeing it in the Prototype 2 "Power of Revenge" trailer. Even in a crude game like that, the song affected me emotionally, and I had to look up the video. It is the only song to make me think both "This is a powerful song." and "This really makes me think about my sadness.."

I lost my shit with this video, note I was a Miami Beach DJ in a industrial club so NIN was the shit back then in the late 80’s early 90’s. Playing pretty every song made by Trent aka NIN hurt was my favorite but when Johnny Cash did it just blew me away with such powerful emotions.
