@@janetprather6696 Other comments are saying it's one of the writers Pat McCormack, the band was "stripping" to do the same. With the streaking crazy in full swing and rumors floating around they may have planed that to scare off anyone actually doing it without them being prepared for it.

Patti Brooks The show was never dull because even when the monologue didn't dazzle and there were some clunkers in it, or Johnny was dealing with a boring guest Carson could create comedy simply by his reaction to the clunkers or the boredom. He was just born to do this, and he did it as well, if not better, than anyone who has ever done it. And Ed was the perfect sidekick for his schtick.

The more time that goes by since the GREAT Johnny Carson retired, the more obvious it is HOW lacking the late-night talk show hosts are in the last 2-3 decades, compared to the incomparable Carson (and Ed too). I was a teen when Johnny did his last show, but was privileged enough to have watched lots of his shows, mixed in with Letterman. But outside of those two, call it being spoiled or whatever, but I can't watch the garbage from the likes of Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, et al, because of HOW good Carson and Letterman were.

On March 28, in 1974, a streaker ran onto the stage of "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." The streaking wave had taken the country by storm in 1974, with streaks reported on a Pan Am 747, Wall Street and in the state legislatures. Ray Stevens' novelty song "The Streak" hit No. 1 on the billboard charts. The moment was too strong for the walrus-mustachioed Pat McCormick, one of writers for "The Tonight Show." Carson was completely taken by surprise by the sight of the 6-foot-7, 300-pound McCormick running naked across the stage. NBC censors were able black out the lower half of the video. The streaker was arrested but released for "lack of evidence," Carson said.

@@bikeny If the airdate of March 28 is correct, this happened before the legendary streaking of the Oscars (which occurred April 2). I'll bet the bad jokes were on purpose, and then BOOM, the big surprise finish! I'll bet everybody was in on it. I think Johnny would have been more shocked if it had been a real rumor. Even the NBC security just stood there and laughed like it was all planned. Great stuff.

It makes me sad that there will never be television made like this again. I was born the same year Johnny retired. I grew up enjoying the work of his decedents like Letterman and O’ Brien. But man no one made magic in front of camera like this group of individuals.

Not in today’s climate unfortunately. Everyone is a perceived threat to everyone else, plus everyone is creepy to someone. Not to mention all the psychological and emotional damage it would cause. We just take anything and everything too seriously.

@Madsixtian troll against today if you wish, but that “people are so offended these days” line is nonsense. It’s selective cherry-picking. There are just as many examples showing how people are _less_ offended these days. That’s if you look at the world without a preconceived agenda.

I'll never forget walking past the newspaper stand January of 05 and finding out he passed. I just started sobbing, walking and sobbing. When Johnny used to put us all to bed it was a kinder safer 🇺🇸 usa. This country has lost it's way, I constantly fantasize about leaving it altogether. Just negativity and more negativity served up by criminals and the media. Very sad...
