Strange thing is that Johnny Marr is only four years older than Noel but because he was only 19 when The Smiths became huge and 23 when they split up it seems like he has been around for longer. He’s been famous for nearly 40 years. He wrote this song when he was 20, which is incredible.

+MrPge1970 On that point, the song would be 1000% better without the depressing as hell lyrics. The tune soars, but the words make you want to jump down a well. I always wished this tune had different lyrics or even was just an instrumental.

I think we could all agree that was epic… I don’t think any of us thought that Johnny Marr could pull that off as good as he did. Remember people, this was Live television and it sounded unbelievable! I give him a lot of credit for what it took to get in front of millions of people and actually own that song. There should be not one negative comment, whatsoever… He deserves a big applause, he created that original guitar sound… Timeless and Eternally priceless

The technical mastery it took to record this song was incredible. After Marr and producer John Porter finally got it, they spent the next several months trying to figure out how to play it live. Andy Rourke call the song a curse. Great to listen to, impossible to reproduce.

What I read was the Tremelo setting would drift out of synch with the beat of the song so they had to record his guitar in snippets.

Will forever remember getting up, hungover as hell after a night of drinking, flipping on the motel room TV, and hearing charmed's version of the song... I never watched the show, but remember my cousin absolutely loving it when it was first airing, so to hear this song as the opening woke my ass up pretty quick. Crazy how music works

Well here it is children. At 3.57 into the song Mr Marr detunes his guitar to create the sound. No studio auto-tune-tom-fuckery there. That's Hendrix style invention (using the instrument to create sounds rather than tech). See Marr's ork with The The (Dusk). epic work....:)
