Wow. How much did Boss flip out when Johnny Marr started playing "How Soon Is Now" through their digital effects unit? A million bucks in advertising could never be that persuasive.

Stumbled on this vid looking for interesting / vintage setting ideas for the GT100. Got to be honest, I didn't recognize the name "Johnny Marr" until a couple minutes in, then had an idea of who he was, then Wiki'd him, then said "shite! of course." awesome sounds and a wonderful innovator of guitar style & sounds of my 80's. and by golly, looks like he's a heck-of-a-nice fellow, too. Cheers to you Mr. Marr.

Always admired your Reel Around The Fountain cover. I'm actually debating whether or not I should sell my Boss ME 70 to fund for the GT 100. I mostly play clean stuff like The Smiths so I was wondering if you could upload a video playing some Smiths samples using the chorus, etc featured on the GT 100?

In university, played in bands which covered the Smiths and never really cared about who the musicians were, just loved to get the sound as quickly and easily as possible. Now that I am 50 and been away from guitar playing for a long time, I am rediscovering the musicians, gear and art of sound in a different and deeper way - call it nostalgia or maybe finally having the wisdom (and time) to discover the artists and character behind the what I rushed through so quickly in my youth. Johnny Marr is a class act and incredible guitarist. Love that Fender worked with him on a signature model Jaguar. The Johnny Marr signature Jaguar is on my wishlist as well as the Boss GT-100 board.

I find it amazing that Johnny Marr is using a Boss GT-100. Its what a £350 unit that anyone can get hold of anywhere! So much for all pro guitarists being collectors of high end boutique gear. Although he is using vintage fender guitars and amps, you would still expect him to be using something like the Axe fx or some other studio quality rack unit. I'm not slagging off Boss fx I own and have owned several boss stomps and they are solid staples for a lot of pros and beginners alike. I think snobbery is all too common in this world, and the key to finding good tone is spending time with your gear getting to know how to set it up rather than always lusting after the next thing that you believe will make you a better player! Great guitarist getting what he needs out of a good piece of kit!

Yeah - check out Robert Smiths pedal tray. It's just standard Boss pedals. And he too has a very unique sound. I think a lot of people worry too much about the effects and not the playing. ;)

absolutely, its tone this, and true bypass analogue that, its never groove, note choice or tune any more? iam guilty of this my self, but you get lost and wonder why your still playing? Iam making a point o sitting down on a Saturday afternoon, sticking some tune on, learning them by ear, then trying to write something, and ive not had such much fun playing in years!

This is the first Boss ME I have tried that made me leave my Vox tonelab s.e. at home and the more I use it the more I like it,still is nowhere close to the Kemper unit that is in the studio but good enough to gig and well done Boss, at last you have a contender. I still think that the chorus and echo sound from the Vox is for my ears perfection,just the drives are not there and this technology to build and use sounds is what Korg should have done instead of the AWEFUL valvtronics pedals they moved on to.

Question: Johnny is using what appears to be two additional Boss FS-5L single latched footswitches with the GT-100. What does this allow him to do that is above and beyond the GT-100 capabilities? And why two single footswitches as opposed to the BOSS dual switch unit or similar?
@rolandeurope
@rolandeurope 10 жыл бұрын
Hey Scot, good question! The extra foot switches don't add any new functionality to the GT-100 processor. Johnny mentioned to us that he has the foot switches on the side of his mic stand on stage. This way he can remain on that spot and doesn't have to keep breaking eye contact with the audience by looking down and finding the correct pedal.

What I do when I play a chord sequence of his, lets take theres a light that never goes out, I pick out single strings either from EAD and then poay one of GBE, but even thatmit sounds like im trying to play it instead of actually playing it, but with what difference does it make, if you getting the picking of that and add that two different chords it could work, or, now this might sound wierd, stand how he stands when he plays , act like he acts on stage and the motion of his hand playing. Learn charming man for his picking and idevidual note playing on the neck, and then new town velocity chords and struming (Am, Em, F, D ) and you have a sort of sound But it is his own style Too quote Noel Gallagher "even johnny doesn't know how to play his own stuff"
@primeDecomposition
@primeDecomposition 9 жыл бұрын
In a nutshell, look for melodies WITHIN the chord on each chord in a progression. Turn the gain down and fuck around with different permutations of arpeggiating chord progressions (taking care to let the notes ring out into each other), using your ears to guide you for melodies that appear within the chords. Learning a handful of Smiths' tunes will get ya started and give ya a feel on how this will go.
