Johnny O'Clock (Dick Powell) is a junior partner in a posh casino with Guido Marchettis (Thomas Gomez). Complicating their longtime working relationship is Guido's wife Nelle (Ellen Drew), who is still in love with former boyfriend Johnny. She gives Johnny an expensive custom pocket watch, the twin of a birthday present she gave her husband, except Johnny's has a romantic engraving on the back.
Johnny gives the watch, along with a rejection note, to Harriet Hobson (Nina Foch), a hat-check girl at the casino, to return to Nelle. Harriet, however, apparently commits suicide using gas. Her sister Nancy (Evelyn Keyes) shows up to find out what happened. She becomes attracted to Johnny. They eventually learn from Police Inspector Koch (Lee J. Cobb) that Harriet was killed by poison.
Harriet was dating Chuck Blayden (Jim Bannon), a crooked cop who is trying to persuade Guido to let him take Johnny's place. When Blayden also turns up dead, Koch suspects that either Johnny or Marchettis is responsible.
Though Johnny tries to resist, little by little, he falls for Nancy. When Koch shows both Johnny and Marchettis Johnny's watch and note, Johnny tells Nancy their relationship is through and takes her to the airport. As he is driving away, however, he narrowly survives a drive-by shooting, and Nancy realizes he was only trying to protect her. She refuses to leave him.
Johnny decides to flee to South America with Nancy, but not before brazenly cashing in his share of the casino. Marchettis pulls out a gun when Johnny's back is turned. They shoot it out; Marchettis is killed and Johnny wounded. Afterward, Nelle offers to testify it was self-defense, but only if he will come back to her. He refuses, so she tells Koch it was cold-blooded murder. Johnny's first instinct is to run away, but Nancy convinces him to give himself up.
---
Directed by Robert Rossen, produced by Edward G. Nealis and Jerry Giesler, story by Milton Holmes, screenplay by Robert Rossen, starring Dick Powell as Johnny O'Clock, Evelyn Keyes as Nancy Hobson, Lee J. Cobb as Inspector Koch, Ellen Drew as Nelle Marchettis, Nina Foch as Harriet Hobson, Thomas Gomez as Pete Marchettis, John Kellogg as Charlie (Johnny's traitorous flunky), Jim Bannon as Chuck Blayden, Mabel Paige as Slatternly Woman Tenant, Phil Brown as Phil, Hotel Clerk and Jeff Chandler as Turk.

Timeless Classic Movies That was pretty sappy. Way too much camp dialogue. Johnny boy was way too much of a smart ass to live that long in the rackets. Waste of time.

yeah, they put a noir drug scent in these old films that filters thru the screen. Once inhaled you're done. You can't stop with just one film ! You have to go to FNA three times a week . That's "Film Noirs Anonymous". It may take years to get "sober" or you may need electro shock.

@daniellethomas7792
@daniellethomas7792 9 жыл бұрын
Yes! Their chemistry was really there Powell exuded sexual masculinity without being a boring macho; and I loved how he did not soft pedal whenever he had to just "give it to her straight" , yet, even under his gangster realism I could feel the character Johnny had a heart! Ms. Keyes, is so very lovely. Very few of todays actresses have the true femininity and lovely soft beauty of those yesteryears in Hollywood. Instead, most flare themselves like whores with a seemingly lack of feeling really female, maybe that's because so many of the male actors today don't really have much virility nor interest in the opposite gender and the females know it!

The film noir - the greatest chapters in the history of cinema! Starting with the 1930 and 1955's film noir created by great directors and actors of high class! Which of the current actors can now replace Hamfreya Bogart, Peter Lorre, and Edmond About Brian ...? No one! There are no such persons, who could now mimic film noir. America, as most of these films belong to the film companies of the country, created a fashion, clothes, hats, cigars, whiskey, cars, sparkling night of advertising, casinos, restaurants, and so forth, just yet created ideal breeding ground for crime novels, which served the script for the black-and-white films. Prohibition has created a mafia and gangsters, in their turn became the heroes of many "black" films. The great director Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, John Huston, Robert Siodmak, Rudolph Mate, Billy Wilder and Otto Perminger, Raoul Walsh, Jean Negulesco, Edward Dmytryk, ........ they are not repeatable !!! See the film noir. About 200 of the immortal masterpieces of world cinema! Long live the film noir !!! My eternal love of film noir !!!

Lee J. Cobb was well respected in Hollywood. And toward the end of his life, had some tough times. Frank Sinatra quietly, and generously saw to things..making sure Cobb was well looked after, and his medical bills paid.

Wonderful film from a director whom suffered greatly from the Hollywood witch-hunt.

Sure, sure. Turns out there were plenty of witches/Commies around and the witch hunter was shut down before he could nail their asses. Now, well, you'd have to be blind, deaf and dumb not to notice they've taken control.

I thought I spotted Jeff Chandler. He didn't even get credited, unless the credits were cut from the end of the movie. One thing for sure, he was playing a bit part. Of course his on screen good looks and charisma, would launch him into stardom, and a place on the A list, along with Dick Powell.

No, his name was not cut off from the credits. It was an uncredited part (and his first film !). He had that great voice & was quite active in radio before becoming a popular leading man at Universal in the 50s.

This is a very worthy example of the film noir genre. The entire caste was adequate. Jeff Chandler made his film debut at 1:25:20 playing the character named Turk. But in this genre the British were probably the best with Carol Reed's THE THIRD MAN as the benchmark. I have never seen the Yanks come close to this. As an example of US achievement though JOHNNY O'CLOCK ranks as a high credit in company with GILDA and maybe KEY LARGO [with Thomas Gomez again] Most of the 30s, 40s and 50s saw almost an entire generation of great Hollywood stars learn much of their trade in film noir.

I have an idea for a Doctor Who companion. Danny West. All he ever wanted was to have a great adventure. He could have been a skilled military sniper, but didn't because he realized he didn't want to kill people. So he became a mall cop in London. When he meets the Doctor, he sees a chance to have a great adventure, and the Doctor finds creative ways of using his talents.

Good film noir full of all the cliches film noir was famous for, this film seemed a little too long though, perhaps it was a directors cut.The picture was near flawless for 1947, THANKS,

Bava was great, he was maried to Elke Sommer, she lived in a haunted California house with Bava, she told this in several interviews, it got so bad they had to leave, and the abandoned house burned down shortly afterwards. Love the channel. Tom, Belgium.

Dispute the odd post production camera moves via probably pan and scan, and KZfaq corrections, you have to see this movie. Along with Powell's other noir with Mike Mazurki and Narrow Margin, the dialogue is just the best. I think my favorite moment is still with the waiter lighting the candle, though. Hilarious.

Interesting tough guy movie. Lovely lady role well played. Fine inspector Kotch role. Tend to agree they have gotten to use by date or would have if there were anything remotely better in non A grade movies. Maybe box sets will take over in years to come. Wonder what the tech will be then? Exciting idea. Hopefully no more YT ads. So where did they have such casinos back in the day.
