He did it all: songwriter, session musician, hitmaker, record label owner, discoverer of The Fifth Dimension and Jimmy Webb. Only the legendary Johnny Mercer can match all that in pop music history ,,, but still there is no Hall of Fame love for Johnny Rivers.

One of the greatest stanzas in rock n roll, if not ALL music: Way down below there's a half a million people Somewhere there's a church with a big tall steeple Inside a church there's an altar filled with flowers Wedding bells are ringin' and they shoulda been ours…

One of the very best natural rock/swamp guitar players around. Heard him clowning around before a state fair gig many years ago with fellow musicians before his set on stage. He was great , Tony Joe White great. He never showed it off much but his modest solos were always hooky and perfect.

I still can't believe how many great artists haven't been inducted into the Rock and roll hall of fame. And they say they are running out of artists to put in. They have added musicians that don't hold a candle to Johnny Rivers, Grand Funk, The Carpenters, and about a 100 others I can name but they put NWA, Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, Sex Pistols, etc in before the these other great entertainers. Sorry for the rant...play on. Johnny Rivers was awesome. Saw him here in Arizona just a couple of years ago and he still is amazing!

I know he had bigger hits, especially Memphis but this has always been my favorite. In 1980 I worked at a club in SF which was owned by the original owner of the Whiskey a Go-Go in LA. He always bragged about how he discovered Johnny and gave him his start. Like he needed any help, lol.

Johnny Rivers has outstanding singing and guitar playing talent and never has relied upon tricks to entertain we lucky Americans. When this video was made in the mid sixties the budget was extremely limited and hence no live music. But believe me we music fans loved seeing our musical heroes on television, of course we understood there was lipsynching taking place but we were delighted to see Johnny Rivers on television. He is an outstanding musician who could entrance his audience.

About time you woke up JVW and realized that all eras have great music and I'm not so sure much of the insipid music of the 1960s could ever aspire to be considered great. How about accepting things as they are and can be instead of cocooning yourself in nostalgia.

Years(decades ago)young folk use to talk about "going steady"! Back in the sixties when I was a young kid, I use to hear wedding bells, horns beeping&tin cans rattleing coming down the street every weekend&even mid-week! As I got older&older this was less&less! Ohhh I can't remember the last time-so long ago! This song talks about marriage&a wedding! The mountain of love now is a deep dark smelly, nasty, smoldering pit in so many folks lives these days! Wrecked love hurts&its so lonely to bear it!!
